When Baby Comes to Play

We had an opportunity to babysit my new neice for 7 days this past January to help out my brother and sister-in-law with an unexpected week of work (albeit temporary). My niece wasn't quite 3 months old yet and it's been almost 6 years since we've had a little one that size in our home for an extended period of time! So each day we got a little better at taking care of her. School still was happening, but it just happened in more creative ways!

I had always heard the phrase, "The lesson is the baby!", said in response to how you homeschool with a newborn. This phrase couldn't have been truer for us that week! The kids hadn't had that much exposure to an infant now that they are all older.

It was a wonderful time of learning all about feeding, burping, rocking, being quiet at naptime and even changing diapers! They all had a wonderful time learning and helping out.

What a blessing this week was for us!

Operation Christmas Child

It's that time of year again...when all of the empty shoe boxes we've been collecting since last November are transformed into vessels of JOY! If you haven't participated in Operation Christmas Child before, then read up about it here.

Here are some photos of our experience from last year!

Wrapping the shoe boxes.

We stock up on school supplies during back-to-school sales.

A bag of goodies we fill up throughout the year. We have Happy Meal toys, dollar spot toys, matchbox cars etc...that we stash in the boxes. We also usually put in toothbrushes, toothpaste, washcloth and soap and a pair or two of white socks. The key to this is to stock up during the year when there are sales so you don't break the bank!

Here are the kids all excited after we filled the boxes.

You can find the dates and drop-off sites here. The official drop-off week is November 17-24, 2008. Although I know our church tends to do the drop-off time before that so they can then take them to the drop-off center.

We always view this time as kicking off the Thanksgiving/Christmas season and spreading the Joy of Jesus to those kids around the world who need to know Him! Spread the love in the humble beginnings of a shoe box! Merry Christmas!
