.
Ok, so I am kind of sad right now. To be quite honest, I have noticed that the 90 Day Bible Reading Challenge is coming under some criticism. I had noticed that many people have not been able to keep up with it and only a few have actually been checking in. I'm not writing this post to make everyone feel bad for not keeping up with it, but more because I believe that there is a big misunderstanding about the purpose of the challenge.
This week, Emma let me know that she would no longer be participating in the challenge. She wrote a post explaining why she felt it was not what the Lord wanted her to be doing at this time, and I completely understand. When the Lord is not leading you to do something...then you don't do it! So Emma, I understand why you decided to stop with the challenge. The only problem I have is with some of the comments left on that post. I feel like some people are misunderstanding the whole purpose for this challenge.
Let me just start off with the reasons I decided to do the challenge:
First of all, I don't feel like I have really challenged myself much lately, so I thought that reading the Bible in 90 days would be a great challenge to encourage me to consistantly be in the Word of God and walk in a closer relationship with Him.
Secondly, I have never read the Bible through and really thought reading it in 90 days would help me keep what I read daily fresh in my mind and get a good overall picture of Biblical events, how the Lord worked through each of these events and how they all relate to each other. In the past, when I tried reading the Bible in one year, I had a hard time seeing this big picture. First of all, I had not personally challenged myself in this area, and because I had not made a commitment to read daily it was easy to slack off. Therefore, it was difficult to keep everything fresh in my mind. The 90 Day Challenge has really helped me remain committed to my daily Bible reading and I've been able to see how everything I am reading comes together to accomplish God's perfect plan.
Please, don't get me wrong, I think it is VERY important to read the Bible through slowly and study it verse by verse and possibly spend days on just one chapter. In fact, after this challenge I intend on reading the Bible through again, reading it slower and really digging deeper into it. But I still believe there is a HUGE benefit and blessing in reading quickly and on a schedule. By the way, MandyGrace had a good post with great suggestions for personal Bible study.
Also, I had read on The Rebelution blog that Brett and Alex Harris had read the Bible through in 50 days. They said it was an amazing experience. I wanted to be able to have that amazing experience as well. So far, I feel I have!
I'm afraid some people believe that those of us who are participating in this challenge are just doing it to be able to say "I've read the Bible in 90 days! I've read the Bible in 90 days! Yeah me!!!" This is not the case. I can only speak for myself, but I'm sure that all of us who are still participating would agree that this is not our motivation. I'm not doing the challenge to check it off my to-do list or to just get it out of the way. I truly want this to be a learning experience for me...an experience that will help me grow closer to the Lord, and...a challenge.
I hope you all will read this and reflect on the reason why you initially said you would participate in the challenge. If the Lord led you to participate in the challenge, why did you stop? Are you using the excuse that you don't want it to be a chore or some other excuse as a reason to quit? If so, sometimes the Lord requires us to do things that are difficult to accomplish or cumbersome, but that is no reason to quit doing what He may have called us to do. I understand that sometimes things happen in our lives that may cause us to get off track with our Bible reading (however we choose to read through the Bible) but we get through those times and get right back on track.
The bottom line is, what has the Lord led you to do? Did He lead you to participate? Or did He lead you not to participate? Obey what the Lord has led you to do.

Hopefully I can get it done in a timely manner though.
Great post Jenna! Thanks for helping us going on the righteous path!
Love,
Jocelyn
I agree with you that many people are taking this challenge the wrong way with thinking that it is a type of challenge where you need to finish first, but that is not what this challenge is suppose to be. It is to be one that will encourage you and that you may learn how the Bible is to used in your life also that you may grow in the Lord. Many people do not finish this challenge in 89 days let alone 90 days. Such as on Haven Today the host took over 100 days to do it, but still felt refreshed and encouraged.
I am so proud of each one of you that are doing this challenge but I would like to ask you this question. Are you doing this challenge with the right attitude or are you doing this challenge because some of your friends are doing it?
Thank you Jenna for taking the time to write this entry!

Great post... I totally agree with every point you made.
Life should be slowing down for myself in the next few weeks, and I am looking forward to the time when I can start back up again on the 90 day...
I think you are doing a wonderful job keeping everybody accountable for their actions with the Challenge. Keep up the good work!!

Anyway. Our church did a "read the bible through in one year" we had alot of people sign up but that was because they felt obligated to sign up. I think only like 7 people actually read the bible through in one year. I didn't participate because I didn't want people to think I was one of those that signed up because they didn't want others to think bad of them. Ya know? I did read the bible, but I didn't finish it in one year! Ha! That's cause I got really lazy :P Sad to say I did :(

What I have found is that when the going gets tough the people that are in it for the praise end up quiting. The people that are in it for spiritual purpose stay.
Using the term "God showed me it wasn't the thing to do" is a lame excuse for not being committed enough to keep up. If God showed that person that it wasn't his will half way through, then they didn't seek his will when the opportunity came up in the beginning!
As I said in my post Goals for Real Life (http://homeschoolblogger.com/BlogBoy/352549/) spiritual goals are not for us to revel in, they are for God's glory and our spiritual growth.
I am not all the way caught up, I am behind three or four days. With Gods help I will get caught up.I am not going to quit.
Thanks for this unique opportunity to grow in God.

P.S. I am now blogging on my new site http://www.ericnovak.com
First, I must say how beautiful your avatar is!!! It is so gorgeous!! You are so pretty. Is that your new hair cut, because it was longer, right?
Thanks for writing your post and reminding everyone what the true reason for doing this challege is. I must say I am behind. If I get to reading too much to try to check off the box on my chart, I find that I read too fast and miss the whole point....That's why I have slowed it down a bit, so I can now soak in the Scriptures a little more. Of course, like you pointed out, I want to read the whole Bible through to get the overall picture, then read it again to study it and go "verse by verse." But however why I do it, even if I don't get it down by the due date, I want to read the whole Bible soon....Thanks for doing this and keeping it up, and encouraing everybody.
And thanks for your sweet comment! Your comments are always so kind---not just to me, but I have reconized everyone your write to. I can tell you have such a kind spirit.
Hope your day is a blessed one,
Brooke
*SIGH* Why is it that lately on HSB, people cannot just think the best of other Christians? Why does every post, every comment, have to turn into a criticism of someone else's motives or even their relationship with God?
As Emma clearly explained, she (and I) have nothing against the Challenge, or the people participating in it - whatever their reasons for doing so. Please extend the same grace to her in her decision to bow out.
In the post on my blog, and the comment I left on Emma's blog, I felt that I was being gracious. I am not going to judge anyone's motives for participating or not participating. I had seen some comments on Emma's post regarding The Challenge and felt that there were at least a few people who misunderstood my motives or the motives of others who are participating and I wanted to dispel any myths.
TC, I feel like all this conflict on HSB is getting out of control. Believe me, I honestly wasn't trying to fuel the fire in any way. I think there has been fault on both sides and it's a shame this situation has not been reconciled yet.
Matthew 5:24 - "leave your gift there before the alter, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift."
1 Peter 4:8 - "And above all things have fervent love for one another, for love will cover a multitude of sins."
And I am still wanting to do the Challenge, I still want to read the bible through. I just won't be able to do it in 90 days. Things have happened, life happens but I am def still trying to work my way through!
Thanks for being so understanding and I am proud of you for doing this!

In any case, I hold no hard feelings toward you or anyone else on HSB. I just want the catty, snippy comments to cease.
I read a comment on a blog... not sure if it was here or at Emma's.... that the Bible wasn't meant to be read like a book. I think the Bible is to be read like a book. I also think it is to be studied, dissected and digested. But, it is also to be read like a book.
When you read a book, you don't always go and find out every intricate deal about every word and every person, and it's ok to read the Bible like that.
If we are doing it as unto the Lord, and not as unto popularity or the need to belong, it's ok... but, one thing we need to understand: God can work in us through these things, sometimes in spite of our own reasons.
If you sincerely seek the Lord, He is faithful and will complete the good work He began in you - especially if you are reading through the Bible (even in 90 days).

I'll talk to you later!

What I said in my comment was purely my opinion from past doings with Bible groups, etc.
"What I have found is that when the going gets tough the people that are in it for the praise end up quitting. The people that are in it for spiritual purpose stay.
Using the term "God showed me it wasn't the thing to do" is a lame excuse for not being committed enough to keep up. If God showed that person that it wasn't his will half way through, then they didn't seek his will when the opportunity came up in the beginning!"
That statement was true for any situation containing spiritual goals.
If I had know that it was your daughter who had quit the challenge, then I would not have even posted a comment. As I did not know that, my comment is totally appropriate for the situation.
You said "I just want the catty, snippy comments to cease."
If you read my comment with a closed mind, then it may seem snippy. If you read it with an open mind, devoid of past situations, then my comment seems very much true.
You said "Why is it that lately on HSB, people cannot just think the best of other Christians? Why does every post, every comment, have to turn into a criticism of someone else's motives or even their relationship with God?"
If we take on your attitude and always think the best of other Christians then we will not be able to tell the wheat from the tares. The Antichrist is going to be disguised and we if we are not on the lookout for him in our mists then we are going to be lead as lambs to the slaughter!
2 Peter 2: 1 "But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you."
A Christian should be able to see my motives as trying to build people up. Proverbs 27:17 "As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another."
I too am growing tired of the problems on HSB. In order to stop it please honor these below items.
Please refrain from using my name in any comment, entries, reviews, or text online.
Please stay off my sites, and don't post me comments.
Do not mention me in comments or PMs to other users.
If you want the conflict to end (as you say you do) Please exclude me from everything. Just forget I exist.
Eric Novak
Thanks for posting the comment and clearing things up for TC. It's my hope that she'll understand. As always, you display great wisdom in your comments and posts.
Thanks,
Jenna ; )
Sparkles, I am sorry for how this unfolded on your blog. Best wishes as you finish out The Challenge.
My apologies if I have offended you Emma.

Elizabeth ^_^
I have seen this play out with great maturity by many of the teenagers that have blogs here at HSB. I have been very impressed with the spiritual and social maturity of most of the particpants in all the bru-ha-ha that has been going on lately.
There are a select few HSB users that do use "backbiting" but I'd say they are in the minority. The truth is that when judging someone's relationship with God we can look at the fruit. And what is obvious to us is also obvious to others so there is no need to point out what is staring us in the face.
I have chosen to stay out of the fray because I have found it becoming increasingly clear whose blogs I should bother with and whose I shouldn't. I just ignore the dumb ones. Who cares if they agree with me? Who has time to chase teenagers around with backhanded comments? Perhaps those people need a hobby?
Thanks, I'm in progress of wrting two books at present! I hope to have them finished by the time I'm 20!
I don't think I'll be changing my template, but thanks!

And, thanks Jenna... glad I could give you a good laugh! I have an idea.. why don't you come and milk the goat? hmm? That would be funny! haha! jk!

My sister does have a five year gap on me, so even though I am much taller then her now, you can still tell she is older. Drat.
I fixed it now, you are the OLDER sister! Lol! I also fixed your name, now you are just plain old Jenna. ;)
I find it hard to believe that Cam could only cook a PPJ, it's not really that hard to cook. Give him a some chicken and see what he can come up with. Haha!
I think that my 2nd comment to TC may have sounded a bit rude if you didn't know everything that was going on between her, me, the Dixons. I hope it works out though.
Eric
What have you been up to?? Tell Cam and Delaine I said hi too!
Love,
Rachel
Thanks for taking the leadership in this challenge,
Sylvia
Peace Out
Thanks for your apologies. There is no offence taken. Thanks for reading my original post. :)
To Sparkles,
Thanks for understanding my situation. Don't feel discouraged; You had a lot of people sign on to the Challange, and still have many many participants who are keeping up well! Feel ENcouraged that there are the few that keep their reading record on the Challange blog, and that you are there to help them reach their goal. God has given you the gift of leadership, and I think you are doing a wonderful job. :)
Thanks for discussing this! It was a good post. :)

My answer is, my desicion was not "lead" by God, but rather a little pressure from my mother and friends who were also joining. I have not read through the Bible before, and my mom suggested it would be good and healthy for me, and besides, all my friends were joining too. I was a little doubtful, because 1. I've never been able to be devoted to long assignments like that. Short attention span, "lazyness," whatever you want to call it, and 2. I wasn't sure it was the right time to attempt that sort of challenge. I didn't want to use the Bible "like a book" (as some have put it), to simply complete the Challenge for my mom. (Note: This does NOT mean that I do not enjoy my Bible time. I simply can't do it on a schedual. It's a personal thing for me, so I think it should be done on a personal schedual. If that personal schedual is 90 days for you, then great! I respect everyone's personal Bible time, and desicions on that subject. Ok, back to my point...)
So I (reluctantly) joined, and struggled through the first few weeks of heavy reading (I'm also a very slow reader, and again, an assignment of reading seems very bleak to me.). Then, when I went to church and heard my pastor talk about misusing the Bible, it really hit home.
So that is why I joined in the first place, and why I left in the end. Had I joined with the mindset that God had lead me into the Challenge, with the purpose of digging deep into His word and hearing it and learning from it, then I would have continued through my personal struggles and made it through to the end. But that's not how God wanted it to work for me this time. Maybe one day, I'll be ready to read God's word through in 90 days/100 days/a year.
I'm still praying for you, Sparkles, and the remaining participants, and I'm so happy that God is opening your eyes repeatedly through His word. :) He's doing great work in you all.
God Bless!
Emma
I'm glad you liked the post! It sure was a daunting task so I'm glad it was worth it. I don't think any of us are fully up to par on that area! I know that there are certain people that I have trouble loving but I am working on it! :-)
Thanks! I have a different picture I want to use for my avatar that's really cute but it's on a friend's camera and they have sent it to me yet because they are in Italy! I can't wait to get it though! :-)
Catch ya later!
Elizabeth
I am sorry some people are not happy with it. I think you are doing a GREAT job at it.
I know this has blessed many teenagers. I am sure it has shown them things they wouldn't have normally noticed.
Just keep holdin on. You will be rewarded for your perservance!!
Love ya!!

Thanks for your sweet comment!! I am not usually that painful to myself… I don’t know what my problem was last week. LOL!!
But I think I am all healed now. ;0)
As Always...

I’m so glad you worried that I was leaving… gives me a warm fuzzy feeling inside! Lol!
Yes, night owls… I used to be an early bird, but I started staying up with mom, and now I’m not.
Love ya,
Jocelyn
I haven't been keeping up on the Challenge, but I think I'm going to start over and go at a slower pace, so I don't feel like I'm behind! I hope that's OK? You won't mind, will you dear?
Love,
Rachel
I’m sorry I didn’t comment on this post sooner. I’ve been out of town. But I think you said everything that needs to be said. My motivation is the same as yours: I want to deepen my relationship with God by reading through the Bible in 90 days and be open to what He wants to teach me. Having a deadline to finish by and daily reading goals is just a way to stay accountable to finish.
Many years ago I heard Doug Phillips of Vision Forum speak, and he mentioned someone he knew who had committed himself to reading through the whole Bible in the period of about a week. He said it was a tremendous time of growth. Mr. Phillips is a wise and godly leader in our culture today, and if he approves of someone reading through the Bible quickly, then I agree with him.
I don’t think there is anything wrong with reading through the Bible in a short amount of time, and if someone thinks it’s wrong, then the problem is with them. As long as our motives line up with Scripture, then I see nothing wrong with it. :-)
Thanks for posting this!
~Mandy
I haven't yet read through the whole Bible, either, and that is my goal... I'm just working at it slowly.
Anyway, just wanted to say I see where you're coming from and thank you for sharing your thoughts. I'm glad that you are learning and growing from your experience doing the Challenge.
God bless,
Ashley
