A round of applause...

for the AUDIO BOOK!
I recently discovered that the audio book has a great place in our household.
I can knit while listening to one... a fact I discovered after unsuccessfully trying to ignore my DS' audio book while reading... I gave up and started knitting instead!
It can keep DS quiet while DD naps.
It is a great crowd pleaser at the end of the day, or in the car.
And it has less effect on the kids than the TV does.
Yes... I have allowed my son to listen to some of my childhood favourites (The Famous Five by Enid Blyton), to some newer favourites (The Harry Potter Series... works great especially if you watch the films after!!) and some test runs of stuff I might use next year (British Folk Tales...).
I am amazed at the talent that can be heard on these books... we seem to primarily get the Chivers Audio Books from our library, but they are definitely good at picking their 'readers'.
I chose an Ellis Peters 'Brother Cadfael' tale to hear while I knitted my latest creation... the reader, one Stephen Thorne, was amazing... he gave appropriate voice and accents to all the characters, including a Welsh accent to Cadfael... I loved it

The 'reader' of my son's book, Jan Francis (A British actress) was likewise very good.  She too managed to put on the accents and character voices!
My husband will willingly listen to a book while driving into or home from work... and he is much more of a TV addict than a bibliphile like me!
It was a welcome rest to my very sore throat last week, and my cold stuffed-up nose this week... thank goodness for audio books!

Wow, that in a week. That's awesome. The audiobooks or mp3 files are a blessing! My dh got me a ipod for last christmas (my only big present) and I can download mp3 files of the radio broadcast on christian radio that I miss because I'm not driving dd to school anymore. Plus Storynory.com has children's stories that my kids love.

I listen to my ipod when I'm crocheting! I've stopped for the summer b/c the yarn gets too hot. I've gotten the car adapter so we can listen in the vehicle and I have a little speaker system I found at goodwill for $12 so we can all listen.

We rent audiobooks from our library system that allows interlibrary loans. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire was a great listen. We liked the "book" better than the movie and it was our first time "reading" a "book". LOL

What a great post!

Audio books are great. They basically ended all child bickering in the car for me. My kids have listened to three of the Little House Books, Charlotte's Web, Because of Winn Dixie, Ramona Quimbynd now the first Harry Potter. Sadly our library won't let us interlibrary loan audio books, but they do have a great collection. My husband likes them too and we listened to the Harry Potter book on our vacation last week. Makes for a peaceful drive!

We have also discovered them too! Also have you heard of the 'Living books for ears?' They are old time radio dramas which have been revived. You can go onto a free email list and they will send you through one per week to down load through your computer to listen to. My 6y/o loves them! I'll try and post about them on my blogg in case your interested in the link. By the way - your knitting is beautiful!
