Five years later

Posted in Newsworthy

Five years ago, two planes hit the World Trade Centers, one hit the Pentagon and one crashed into a field in Pennsylvania.
I was riveted to the TV with tears pouring down my face, watching as people jumped from the WTC, as families waited for news of loved ones, as those who worked there, walked home over the bridges.
I remember the crystal-clear, blue skies, the silence of a planeless sky...
And I remember wondering how everything could be so quiet, seem so normal after such an act.
I remember the rousing speeches by the President, the fantastic leadership of Rudy Giuliani...
The whole incident is very clear in my memory... and it is the reason I will not watch the TV today... after being driven to tears by the morning news shows.

In the five years that have passed, I have lost loved ones, and given birth to new ones.  Life has moved on, even though the memories are very sharp.
Take a good look at the bloggosphere today... there are some wonderful tributes out there to people who were killed in the attacks.

I'm with you. I watched a bit on the Today Show this am, but it is all still too fresh for me to allow myself to "wallow" in it all day. I can't watch all the myriad of 9/11 movies yet either.

I was working at a children's home -- on my way home from dropping a boy off at school, actually, when I heard the news on the radio. I rushed back to tell DH, a huge NYC lover, and spent the rest of the day glued to the TV with several of the home's staff and later to the radio with my cottage's residents.

I've looked at my kids several times today realizing they weren't even born yet when all that happened. I hope they never have to witness something so horrid -- even through mere live news broadcasts.

Sep. 11, 2006 - I'll never forget!

I was very pregnant with A at the time. We had been at toddler group at church all day and not heard a thing! God had rearranged my afternoon so I had been taking a good friend home with her kids. We had just pulled into her drive when my mobile went and it was my BIL asking how my family was? I had no idea why he was asking! My Grandfather, Uncle, and brother all work together in Manhattan! BIL said that someone had bombed Manhattan! My friend just managed to catch me as I started to collapse! She got me inside, put on the TV, got me the phone, and made me a drink - all within about 2 minutes! She is a nurse and a midwife, God even made sure I was with someone who could look after me and the baby at the time. We turned on the TV just in time to see the towers fall (we have a 5 hour time difference)! What a shock!!!!! BIL got through to my Mom before I could and rang back to tell me they were all OK and she would give me more information later. Thank God! They were trapped in the city for a couple of days before they could get home, but they were OK. When I got home I put on CNN and didn't turn it off for over a week. I felt so far away from everyone! Thankfully everyone we knew from our old church who works in the city was safe! Even one fellow I grew up with whose train should have been passing under the towers when it happened - he had missed his connection and wasn't on the train that was crushed! God was so good to us as a family - I know it was a miracle. We continue to pray for those who didn't have a happy ending to that day.
