Welcome to My Blog!

Schooling two active boys has never been more... interesting. That's the word I'm looking for! I love my boys! God has given them the blessing of strong, active bodies and minds. We continually pray the first will remain intact, and the second will remain engaged with Him first, and then the school work. You'll meet my sweet sons, both entirely different, but both loving God to the best of their ability in the way He made them. I lovingly refer to them as my Bell Pepper Boy and my Habanero or Hambone. That should say it all! This blog is an eclectic mix. The events, conversations, and the thoughts behind it all will be in here. Every once in a while I'll try to capture something I don't want to forget. I hope you find things you enjoy. Please let me know if you do! Blessings!

"Peace! Be Still!" and "Silent Night"

Posted in God Things
Good afternoon! How is your Christmas season moving along today? Are your favorite traditions in place? Have you finished all you set out to do before the "big day" that's right around the corner? Are you at peace with your day, or are you thinking of the list that looms? Is your schedule "maxed out" -- the parties, the events, the church services? Does your head spin and heart race when you think of what lies ahead? Or are you at peace? What, exactly, would peace look like in this season? (I often wonder myself!) Is it all about a "silent night"?

Here we are on the verge of one of the two most significant holy times of the year. How much more important and precious can you get than Jesus' coming or His going? Some time ago I was blessed with a new song for the kids (I think) that related to His coming and going. Not sure about putting the lyrics here, since I've never copyrighted a thing. I won't share them all yet. But, it's a story about "an innocent babe", an "innocent man", a "powerful man" who changed everything!

His coming. Wow! Fully God, with all the rights, abilities, power, and entitlement that goes with it, and He became an infant. How juxt opposed is that? He became an innocent, dependent, powerless, helpless child. An infant king coming into the world in such rough surroundings just doesn't seem right, does it? The simplicity just doesn't seem to fit with who this King really is, does it?

Don't we just have the same interesting competition with Christmas today, two thousand years later? There's the Norman Rockwell Christmas that centers around warmth, simplicity, and family. And, then we have what the retailers put before our eyes. The glitz, glimmer, and gotta have it mentality has permeated the holy days in ways that just seem so wrong.

We've fallen into a trap we never saw coming: we've mistaken the heart of our King!

All of the house of David would have been in and around Bethlehem at the time. The census summoned them there. I suppose if God's plan had incorporated some of what we've got going on today, it's possible He could have had the birthday party of the first century right then and there. A little more flash and pomp, and Jesus could have been announce properly, right?

Yet, God revealed Himself to simple people, those who would listen, believe, and go see the miracle beginning to unfold. How special to be a shepherd in the field that night! In a peaceful, quiet setting, God opened a window into heaven for those shepherds to catch a glimpse!

So, what should this season be? What would the perfect painting of Christmas be like? Does it mean huddling up in the nicely decorated home, emptying the schedule of any competing "noise" out in the real world? Does it mean no lights, candies, toys? Should we take some vow of silence to increase our Christmas experience for our own personal benefit in the peace department? I don't think so at all!

What if Christmas was a very special, unique event worthy of thoroughly contemplating in the depths of your soul. What if it was worthy of you sharing with everyone, so they might catch a glimpse through that window into heaven. What if it was worthy of your uninterrupted prayer to protect your heart, mind and soul from the Enemy's attempts to infuse glitz, glamor, and busyness to make you ineffective in bringing the good news of Christmas?

Let us be full of peace! Let us not be silent! Let us celebrate the coming of our King in all of His simplicity, but remembering His truth, love and power!
