Welcome to My Blog!

Schooling two active boys has never been more... interesting. That's the word I'm looking for! I love my boys! God has given them the blessing of strong, active bodies and minds. We continually pray the first will remain intact, and the second will remain engaged with Him first, and then the school work. You'll meet my sweet sons, both entirely different, but both loving God to the best of their ability in the way He made them. I lovingly refer to them as my Bell Pepper Boy and my Habanero or Hambone. That should say it all! This blog is an eclectic mix. The events, conversations, and the thoughts behind it all will be in here. Every once in a while I'll try to capture something I don't want to forget. I hope you find things you enjoy. Please let me know if you do! Blessings!

Momentum Monday and Frugalness?

Posted in Mom Things
Well, it couldn't hurt to try to "rename" Monday toward something a little more positive, right? It's a shame that thinking doesn't really make it so in all things. But, we'll try for today.

My lovely friend, Laura, has been giving me a little help in the area of frugalness, as have all of you who posted comments for me. I am so grateful to each and every one of you! (Thanks!)

Laura wanted to know if I had other recipes, and I thought I did. So, I went digging. I read the Miserly Moms book a few years ago, and I snagged some recipes from that book and a couple friends and tucked them in my recipe box for later. Some I used, like baby wipes. Some I was too chicken to try, like furniture polish.

Since Laura asked, here are the ones I have in my recipe box:

Baby Wipes
From Barb Christiansen

1/2 roll of Bounty paper towels
1 3/4 cup water
2 T. baby oil
1 T. baby bath

Mix and submerge towels. Tip over to help absorption. You can soak in a plastic bag and then divide into separate baggies. (These really did work, and the Type A person can fold the paper towels, while the other Types can just use a big knife and slice the roll.)  *lol*

Furniture Polish
From Miserly Moms

1 part lemon juice
2 parts vegetable oil or olive oil (I think I was freaked out by "food oil" on the furniture. *Imagined children and dogs "tasting" the furniture.*)

Silver Polish
From Miserly Moms

1/4 cup baking soda
1 1/2 T. water

Make a paste with 1/4 cup baking soda and 1 1/2 tablespoon water. Apply with a damp sponge. Rub, then rinse and buff dry.

Put the baking soda in enough boiling water to cover the silverware. Let sit 10 minutes, then polish.
(Probably helps to have and use the silver, right?) *giggle*

Upholstery Cleaner
From Miserly Moms

1/4 cup Borax
1 T. dishwashing liquid
1 cup warm water

Rub with a soft cloth that has been dipped in this solution. (I think I was scared to try this, too.)

Now you know. I've thought about these types of things before, as evidenced by my recipe box. But, I'm often not sure of ruining something with a homemade recipe. Plus, you have to imagine the conversation in the soap aisle last night as dearest husband and I were discussing the bar soap for my first batch of laundry detergent. *sigh*  He wanted to be sure he could SMELL if the clothes were clean.  *lol*

Laura, that's what I've got at this point. Have you tried these? What do you think?

Monday, February 11, 2008 - Leather, you say?

A Google search yielded a bunch of stuff. Here's one:

Homemade Recipes for Cleaning and Conditioning Leather:

Read ingredients in leather cleaners carefully. You will find that the ingredients are pretty common: olive oil, lanolin and Neat's-foot oil (animal rendered oils) are generally used in commercial products.

You can reproduce these commercial products in your own kitchen without the expense of commercially packaged products. Another advantage to making these yourself is the easy, one step cleaning and conditioning. No need to buy more than one expensive product.

For full cleaning and conditioning, try this mixture:

* 1 part white vinegar
* 2 parts neatsfoot oil OR raw or food grade linseed oil
* Use a white lint free cloth to swirl on, leave overnight then buff for maximum shine.

Remove any mildew or mold on leather before starting with a regular cleaning. To remove mildew, try this inexpensive, easy recipe:

* 1 part rubbing alcohol
* 1 part water
* Spray on or use on a dampened cloth. Use a clean white lint free cloth and replace as it gets dirty. Avoid direct sunlight and allow to air dry. You may also turn on a fan and allow it to gently waft over the surface.

Removing Stains From Leather

It may be impossible to remove all stains from leather, depending on their origin. However, here are some simple cleaning tips that might help.

* Toothpaste straight on the stain, lightly scrubbed in and then wiped off.
* Try non-acetone nail polish remover wipes on ink stains.
* Aerosol hairspray works well on tough stains. Spray the hairspray directly on the stain and wipe away. This may take several swipes so keep at it.

Round glass water stains on antique leather tabletops made of hard stretched leather might be removed by rubbing in mayonnaise. Leave the mayonnaise for a couple of hours then wipe off.

A friend of mine gave me a recipe a while ago for homemade laundry soap. I tried it, and have been using it ever since! It works so much better than any brand name I've ever used- and it's much less expensive. I also use a recipe for upholstery freshener. It works better than febreeze, and it's also more cost effective.

If you haven't already been to this site, you may wish to check out "The Family Homestead" http://www.thefamilyhomestead.com/index.html. I have found it helpful.

I am going to try the leather cleaner recipe, but when I saw the comment about the pads, I had to agree. No... just no. I'd rather spend the money!
Have a great day!
