Welcome to My Blog!

Schooling two active boys has never been more... interesting. That's the word I'm looking for! I love my boys! God has given them the blessing of strong, active bodies and minds. We continually pray the first will remain intact, and the second will remain engaged with Him first, and then the school work. You'll meet my sweet sons, both entirely different, but both loving God to the best of their ability in the way He made them. I lovingly refer to them as my Bell Pepper Boy and my Habanero or Hambone. That should say it all! This blog is an eclectic mix. The events, conversations, and the thoughts behind it all will be in here. Every once in a while I'll try to capture something I don't want to forget. I hope you find things you enjoy. Please let me know if you do! Blessings!

Special Verbs?

Posted in Boy Things
I am here to tell you that the investment of several years of quality instruction has just been "rocked" in our family universe. This is what happens when the Principal of a home school who has a stellar degree in accounting gets "involved" in the world of language.

The scenario goes a little like this:

We were having a lovely lunch at the local fast food joint named for some Dave's daughter. ;') Conversation was moving right along until it derailed right in front of my very eyes...and ears.

Student: "Dying is a verb."

Principal: "No, it's not. It is if you dye your hair, but dying isn't exactly an action. I mean, how much action really happens when you die?"

Teacher: "Ummmmm. WHAT, Honey?????"

Principal: "There's no action in the whole thing!"

Teacher: "Great. Years of investment in education...messed up!"

Principal: "Well it's not like a continual action verb."

Teacher: "That's what participial phrases are for, but. . ."

Principal: "Well, it has to be some kind of special verb, then."

Teacher: "Special like a linking verb, auxiliary verb, or helping verb?"

Principal: "I don't know."

I, the English Literature-Secondary Education major will be left to fix this whole thing, of course.

Yet, I did wonder if there was some kind of category for this particular verb. A limited action verb, perhaps?

Ahhhhh...life is just so interesting in our household. Never dull.

Your family sounds so much like mine! (I'm including the last few entries in this too.) I love it! Oh, and don't feel bad about the grammar gaff. My hubby was a history major but claims that in k-12 experience he never had a grammar class. (Although generally unimpressed by most public schools, I find that hard to believe.)

I hope you had a great weekend! Things are sadly unchanged on our end.

Jennifer

PS Hubby wanted to know if any of that info was helpful.

Oh no! My dh has done that with my dc too. He's told them that the Adirondacks are taller than the Rockies and that an electron microscope fits in the palm of a hand, and many other discrepancies! sigh

Don't you love it when hubby tries to help with the schooling? Same thing would happen at my house. Hopefully, at least, your kids will never go veggie. I wish this was a phase, but she quit eating beef and pork two years ago, but would still eat chicken. Now chicken is out too. I think she writes little notes to herself at night, "Ways to make mom's life more difficult" 1) refuse meat, etc.

has the Principal never seen any Westerns? In my experience, one gunslinger gets shot, and staggers around, crashes a barstool or two, through the saloon doors, down the road, bouncing off store fronts and a cactus or two, before he finally dies. Highly active!

ROFL! I guess the quick deaths aren't verbs but the really dramatic, long drawn out ones are??!!
