Welcome to My Blog!

Schooling two active boys has never been more... interesting. That's the word I'm looking for! I love my boys! God has given them the blessing of strong, active bodies and minds. We continually pray the first will remain intact, and the second will remain engaged with Him first, and then the school work. You'll meet my sweet sons, both entirely different, but both loving God to the best of their ability in the way He made them. I lovingly refer to them as my Bell Pepper Boy and my Habanero or Hambone. That should say it all! This blog is an eclectic mix. The events, conversations, and the thoughts behind it all will be in here. Every once in a while I'll try to capture something I don't want to forget. I hope you find things you enjoy. Please let me know if you do! Blessings!

Walking the Walk. . .

Posted in God Things
A blogging friend once said her blog was missing the "grit" in life. In honor of her statement, I thought I would toss in a little of my own in here. Are you ready?

Immanuel Christian Academy is flawed!

*gasp!*

I mean, we're really flawed here at ICA. I didn't know if you knew that, but I thought it very important to be full of integrity in what I portray here in my little corner of the Blog Universe. So, there you have it. We are not perfect, and we won't pretend to be. I am imperfect, and so are my students. Sometimes our talk is good, but. . .

There. I oddly feel better now.  *grin*

(Back to our regularly scheduled programming now. . .)

So, what does all of this have to do with walking the walk? Clearly I had a plan when I titled this entry, right?  (Those who know me well might be giggling. Really! I did honestly have a plan! I'm not kidding!)

Okay, so Bible with the boys went something a little like this:
When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." ~ John 8:12
I know you're ever so curious about my approach to this verse, right? I mean, the kids are always saying and doing the most intriguing things during our Bible times, and I think you've come to expect it. Well, I'll let you be the judge. I can only hope this lesson had some real revelation and longevity.

We began by going on a verb hunt. See them? Jesus spoke. He said. I am. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness.

First question: What does it mean when Jesus is the "light of the world" in this verse. We're not talking about the sun in this instance. After all, if we were talking about the sun, that would be only part of the world lit at any given time, leaving the other portions in darkness. Jesus says He is THE light. He's trumping our big, gaseous ball of light in the center of our universe. We'll talk more about that in the future.

Next, Jesus says "Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness." Wow. There are two options here. Light and dark. Following leads to walking in the light. . .all the time! Awesome!

What is following in this case?

The boys wanted to jump immediately to a game of Simon Says, and that wouldn't have been too far off the mark. But, we've done that one before. I really wanted to talk more about the WALK part of this verse.

So, Bell Pepper was given the chance to invent a "walk" of his own. It was complicated and a bit awkward, in truth. I don't think I could have imitated it myself. Habanero was given the task of copying it exactly. Yes, I said exactly! (He couldn't do it.) Bell Pepper chose another, simpler walk that still proved difficult for Habanero to copy exactly.

I suggested Bell Pepper break it down for Habanero, that he explain what he was doing and give verbal cues like saying left and right as he walked. (This proved helpful to Habanero, but there was more to it.)

Habanero learned there were several things that mattered here:

Bell Pepper needed to show, clearly and slowly, exactly what he wanted in the walk.
Bell Pepper needed to be consistent in what he did, so it could be followed.
Bell Pepper's verbal clues needed to be accurate so Habanero could do it.
Any difference between Bell Pepper's and Habanero's walks missed the mark.
Habanero was responsible for observing the walk.
Habanero was responsible for following instructions and listening to the cues.
No one could walk this walk for Habanero.
(Don't forget there's room for grace in this, but we're working on clear obedience here.)

The biggest thing we learned from this whole thing?

Walking as Jesus did is incredibly hard for the same reason it is difficult to follow someone else's walk: It's not our natural walk!!!

If Bell Pepper's walk was just like Habanero's normal, everyday walk, it would be a piece of cake. But, it wasn't. It was different. It was complex. It wasn't natural.

Jesus' walk is DIFFERENT!
His walk is NOT NATURAL!
We will walk VERY DIFFERENTLY if we follow Him!

That is an awesome honest post. Sometimes I think we always sound perfect in blog land. Thanks for sharing this. Also, don't forget--AI tonight!

I am trying to befriend a newcomer at church who is timid.

She told me the reason she likes our family is because we are so imperfect. :P

well, *that* we can do. :)

I just had a blog friend make similar comments about myfamily and I. And I have others say that to me about my marriage etc.....that it sounds perfect. I, of course, inform them ummm no, far from it. Back to my blogging friend's comment. I posted the other day about our new nature study and that we werent able to begin that day b/c my children were 'having issues' with on another. That one comment made her feel so much better. Perhaps this encourages me to be more 'real,' to say more. I often don't think to say those things but just like your post, it blesses others to be transparent!
Thanks!

Wonderful illustration! I'm thinkin' that we may have to try that here! =D

We can't walk naturally like Chirst. Thankfully, we have Christ in us and if we let Him do the walking for us.... LOL!

An old commercial comes to mind:

"Let the Spirit do the walkin', it's a snap!"

(A tweak of a Yellow Pages ad from forever ago. . .)

I think it is important to admit that we are all flawed. None of us can walk that walk perfectly. We are all works in progress. Thankfully, god loves us and keeps working on us and teaching us the walk. :-)
