Welcome to My Blog!

Schooling two active boys has never been more... interesting. That's the word I'm looking for! I love my boys! God has given them the blessing of strong, active bodies and minds. We continually pray the first will remain intact, and the second will remain engaged with Him first, and then the school work. You'll meet my sweet sons, both entirely different, but both loving God to the best of their ability in the way He made them. I lovingly refer to them as my Bell Pepper Boy and my Habanero or Hambone. That should say it all! This blog is an eclectic mix. The events, conversations, and the thoughts behind it all will be in here. Every once in a while I'll try to capture something I don't want to forget. I hope you find things you enjoy. Please let me know if you do! Blessings!

A Little Encouragement

Posted in School Things
Some of you may be receiving SoCalVal's Yahoo Group e-mails. For those that do, you know how encouraging she's been in her posts the last week or so. (I'm so blessed by her encouragement over finishing the year strong...and finishing, in general!)

So, today I read that schools rarely finish their curriculum. I read that most home schooling moms don't finish their curriculum either. (Hmmmmm.) That was fairly freeing.

You know what was more freeing? When I read it to my Dashing Hero, he said, "See-e-e-e-e? It's okay! You don't have to finish everything!"

*sigh of relief*

I'm going to look for my nearest "escape hatch" now. . .  *giggle*

YES!! That was a big part of my forced relaxation - realizing that it was ok if we skipped a few lessons here and there.

Have fun with your escape hatch! (Mission Impossible theme music playing softly in the background as Jen, clad in a black catsuit, slips into a coffee shop, sans papers to grade or planning sheets, to get a few minutes of peace.)

General Mayhem must be cursed. We continue to home school until the curriculum runs out. Hey, we paid for it, we're gonna use it! Not all of the material ends at the same time, so when the school year winds down we end up with less and less work to do each day, as science ends on one day, math on another, spelling on another. It all gets done in time, and we're very relaxed about it.

Now that is the most encouraging thing I've heard all week because I'm about ready to ditch most everything at this point.

I'm afraid we're the "must finish curriculum" guys too. I think my hubby will break out in hives if we don't ;) Like Arby above, our subjects pretty much all end at different times. Our school days going to begin getting mighty short over the next three weeks!

Don't beat yourself up though if you don't finish your books. They've already learned way, way more than any kid in a regular school did this year!

You know, that is true...when my ds was in ps he brought home workbooks that had only been 1/2 done (maybe even a little less then half). Yet I placed the (undue) stress of making sure we completed EVERY lesson in EVERY book upon myself. Hmmm, you are right...this is freeing!!! LOL

It is ironic that homeschoolers still cover more work in less time! LOL!

I remember when my child would come home at the end of the year with the unfinished workbooks. It was suggested that they could finish them up over the summer to stay fresh on things.... =P

I hs an only, so we can usually finish the curriculum with no problem. Our problem is just trying to find what works for science, history, and health.

I posted some Tightwad Tuesday tips on my blog that I'm really excited to share with everyone. Stop by and take a look!

I think that it really doesn't matter how far you get in a particular curriculum, in a given year. Kids learn at different paces. As long as they made progress and were enriched by the work, then I think that it was worth the money spent!

Having considered this topic a bit more, I have come to a conclusion. I don't think I will pull a Monty Python "Run away! Run away!" But, we will finish those things as we are led to finish them.

Plain and simply, I needed to FEEL the freedom from the bondage of the books. I didn't necessarily need to toss them into the fire as a result. *lol*

I'm going to qualify for "Relaxed Home Schooler" status someday. I swear it! *rotflol*
