Welcome to My Blog!

Schooling two active boys has never been more... interesting. That's the word I'm looking for! I love my boys! God has given them the blessing of strong, active bodies and minds. We continually pray the first will remain intact, and the second will remain engaged with Him first, and then the school work. You'll meet my sweet sons, both entirely different, but both loving God to the best of their ability in the way He made them. I lovingly refer to them as my Bell Pepper Boy and my Habanero or Hambone. That should say it all! This blog is an eclectic mix. The events, conversations, and the thoughts behind it all will be in here. Every once in a while I'll try to capture something I don't want to forget. I hope you find things you enjoy. Please let me know if you do! Blessings!

Happy Birthday to You-u-u-u-u-u-u!

Posted in Tickling the Funny Bone
This is a frightening entry. It's the kind of entry not designed for those who are weak in stomach. Please. Turn back if you are of the gentler, kinder nature with a soft spot for . . . foods in the kitchen!

The other day (not yesterday, since I was at the theme park yesterday) I was rather frustrated by my vegetable oil container in the cabinet. It was rather "gooey" on the bottom, and I figured I would clean both the container and the cabinet. I have my suspicious thoughts about plastics and how well they can contain liquids for certain periods of time, but that's probably another entry under the heading of conspiracy theories.  ;')

Insert the "If you give a Mom an oily cabinet" theme music.   ;')

So, everything came out of the small cabinet. This, mind you, is the cabinet right next to my stove. Yes, the stove that I have had for several years and can count the number of times on my given digits that the oven has been used (and only need one hand for the number of times I've used the broiler on the bottom). Such that it is, this cabinet holds various treasures. Treasures that have been in my kitchen as "staples" for some time.

Well, I have to be honest now. The words "for some time" may be misleading to you. You see, when I pulled everything out of this cabinet I found the following: half a bag of sugar, half a bag of flour, the new peppercorns that went MIA, a never-opened can of  baking powder, a never-opened bottle of balsamic vinegar, half a gallon of olive oil, an unopened bottle of olive oil, another unopened bottle of olive oil, two opened and one unopened vinegar bottles, and more than one bottle of vegetable oil. (Some of you are wondering how this happens. The rest of you KNOW how this happens, so I won't get into it.)

Friends, what surprised me more than the contents of this cabinet was what my keen detective skills detected next! I had no less than a few dozen culinary senior citizens in my cabinet! Sadly, not fine wines, this was going to be painful.

Need I mention that we moved into our house when Habanero was born? Habanero turned 7 years old in May. Friends, some of these things were dating back . . . not quite that far back . . . but they sure were competing in the "who's older competition" with my son.  *sigh*

In this house we compute human years, dog years, and now culinary years? Dear me! We'd have been talking ancient with things like:

Sell before Jun '05
Best before Apr '06

I'm not sure which was more disheartening to me:

Exp  Dec '04

Or. . . .

Exp Jul '08.

I have removed said foods from my "to be used for human consumption" area. I figure maybe the vinegar will still be useful for cleaning. You don't want to know what was living in my flour (now gone) or what baking powder (albeit unopened) looks like after a second or third year in a cabinet. Suffice it to say I get what they mean when they say "Best Before" . . . .

A moment of silence for the ancient ones!

Now a song to celebrate the "lives" who gave all for me:

Happy birthdays to you-u-u-u-u!
You lived in my zoo-o-o-o-o-o!
You're older than dirt now-w-w-w!
You look like it, too-o-o-o-o-o-o-o!

I remember picking up a food item to place in a moving box and thinking to myself, "Hey! I remember moving this item to this house. Eight years ago! Ah....maybe it's time to let it go." These things happen. It's disgusting, but true.

This hits a little too close to home! The bottles of oil are the best. We do the same thing with salad dressing!

Oh man, that's way funny! I have a few bottles of oil with a few more of its oil friends lurking in my cabinets too :) Here's a good one for ya: One time when my husband and I were visiting back home (we stay with his parents), he wanted to make some kool aide for the kids. His mom said there were probably some packs in the cabinet. These packs were from the 70's!!!!!!! We laughed our heads off. The frightening thing was that my husband tried to use it!! Ahhhh!!! THIS is why he isn't allowed to cook in my kitchen! (For the record, a thirty-plus year old packet of kool-aide will NOT dissolve, no matter how much you stir it) ;)

I did a post similar to this a year or so ago when I cleaned out my entire pantry. 'Gross' is the only word that comes to mind. I even posted a picture! =) So I know your pain....

That's so funny. Believe it or not, we had some cans of cream of mushroom soup that went through more than one move with us, and the folks helping us the first time helped us a couple of years later and recognized the cans!!!!! They'll never let me live it down. :-)

I know what you mean!! We've never lived in the same house for that long, but we've had traveling staples:) They go to the next house with us but still remain unused. When we moved here, I actually brought only what I use. Which is more than it used to be.
We haven't started school officially yet, I'm just trying to maintain a little structure in the house having seven kiddos.

I'm laughing as I've been there, too. All your grains can bring on this 'birthday' moment, too. I still remember opening up a box of couscous back when my oldest was only three and seeing a miniature little 'worm' wiggling in the stuff. Gross!

Peace and laughter!
