Welcome to My Blog!

Schooling two active boys has never been more... interesting. That's the word I'm looking for! I love my boys! God has given them the blessing of strong, active bodies and minds. We continually pray the first will remain intact, and the second will remain engaged with Him first, and then the school work. You'll meet my sweet sons, both entirely different, but both loving God to the best of their ability in the way He made them. I lovingly refer to them as my Bell Pepper Boy and my Habanero or Hambone. That should say it all! This blog is an eclectic mix. The events, conversations, and the thoughts behind it all will be in here. Every once in a while I'll try to capture something I don't want to forget. I hope you find things you enjoy. Please let me know if you do! Blessings!

Schooling. . . .

Posted in School Things
It's still okay to write entries about our schooling, right? I mean, this being the Home School Blogger site, I would assume my focus on schooling is not misplaced.  *grin*  I thought I would bring you up to speed on what's happening in our world on the spiritual-educational front. Enjoy!

This is the first year I've begun school this early. Actually, I'm trying to sneak it in without anyone noticing, however, two of the somebodies in this house are not fooled. Ah, well, I tried. I was making an attempt at slowly introducing things as we went along. So far, I've brought in History (which might as well be Bible, too), Math, Language, and Spelling. We are doing a lot of reading aloud in all of this, and it's really become some of my favorite work in all the years we've home schooled. (I think the jury may still be out as far as the peppers are concerned.)

I am thoroughly enjoying our history program this year! Yay! We've begun Mystery of History, and we're loving it. Volume one covers creation through the resurrection, and we are just getting into Noah now. We have our huge time line built and hanging on the kitchen wall. We're reading the book itself, adding other wonderful reading, and doing the activities with a lot of success. (I'm still trying to get the hang of the time line figures, but that's the last piece for me to understand; I don't want to glue something and worry I did it wrong.) But, this has been great!

So, we are reading Mystery of History by Linda Hobar, Adam and His Kin by Ruth Beechick, as well as our Bibles, of course. This has been so wonderful for me! Not only is it a refresher on what I thought I knew, it's putting flesh on the very things I had not considered in the earliest historical records of God's people. What a fascinating experience . . . and the kids are really enjoying it! They beg me to read to them each day, and sometimes I have to tell them we need to wait a day to catch up with our time line. (The teacher needs time to print things out on the computer!)  *lol*

Okay, so that's our exciting stuff. The other subjects are going fairly well, too. We are still having our same struggles with diligence that we've always had, so you can pray for that. (I would sure appreciate this being bathed in prayer!) I want to have the best year ever! Please pray for that, too.

On a side note, in my own personal time, I've been reading some neat things, too. So much of the Old Testament focus is colliding with what I thought was my New Testament understanding, and I am having moments that leave me sitting in awe and wonder. Maybe I'll blog about that soon, too. But, I am having some very eye-opening things take place. Namely, I see I have been a bit lop-sided in my approach to Scripture. That, friends, is a very interesting place to be for me. I am loving it, though.

Hope you are all have a great week! Have you started? Are you starting soon? May your year be blessed in any case!

If I am well enough, we will start tomorrow. Although all summer we've continued reading aloud and doing some math, not nearly as much as I hoped, but more than last year.

We started back to school on August 5th. It has been hectic around our house since the start of school. However, for PE we are trying to swim in our neighbor's pool. : )
The Mystery of History series sounds really interesting. I want to try it someday.

We started back yesterday. I find myself welcoming the structure that school brings to the household. I think that means I'm getting old. =(

Why hello old friend!! Hope all is well over here. Thanks for visiting me -- I was away for a month and have been back a couple weeks.
Anyway, sounds like a great start to the year for you all. Wonderful! I will certainyl add you to my prayer list --- I too want this to be our best year yet! And every year it has gotten better and better. We actually started 'formal' schooling a couple weeks ago, but we learn or school all year long.
I have not looked at Mystery of History, but have heard of it. I had a mental image of your time line in the kitchen!! HA HA!
Are you using the Flying Creatures of the 5th Day to study your flying animals? I cant wait to read and see all that you do!

Sounds like you're off to a great new year!

And of course you can't sneak something past the "somebodies". They're too smart for that- they're homeschooled! =D

We never really stop. We just keep going. I'd like to get us into a regular schedule (for the first time). It's not my strong suit.

We just got back from a 2 week vacation in Virginia! We saw Colonial Williamsburg, Mount Vernon, Washington DC, Montpelier and Monticello! We had a wonderful time! We start school (with books as opposed to field trips) next week. I'm so glad you're enjoying your history books!
Blessings,
Laurie
