Welcome to My Blog!
Schooling two active boys has never been more... interesting. That's the word I'm looking for!
I love my boys! God has given them the blessing of strong, active bodies and minds. We continually pray the first will remain intact, and the second will remain engaged with Him first, and then the school work. You'll meet my sweet sons, both entirely different, but both loving God to the best of their ability in the way He made them. I lovingly refer to them as my Bell Pepper Boy and my Habanero or Hambone. That should say it all!
This blog is an eclectic mix. The events, conversations, and the thoughts behind it all will be in here.
Every once in a while I'll try to capture something I don't want to forget. I hope you find things you enjoy. Please let me know if you do!
Blessings!

Eggs-emplary!
Posted in School Things
For those of you who were wondering, we've been busy with the eggs.
"To every thing....turn, turn, turn...there is a season...turn, turn, turn...and a time to every purpose...under heaven..." (Insert melody on your own here.)
Well, we are now at Day 12! Who knew we could make it this far? It feels a little challenging each time we leave the house, since we have to schedule everything around the turning, but we've done fairly well. If I could do this right, I would say an automatic turner would be the way to go, but we do this "the old fashioned way" so we have experience with the eggs. I won't lie; there have been days we've been a little "long" on the turning schedule. I'm hoping there is grace for that...and that even a hen who can't read Xs and Os would not turn them as methodically. (There's hope, right?)
As we've been going through this experiment, I thought I would mention some of the things we experienced. When turning the eggs, the best way to do it is to be sure you turn an odd number of times during the day. Why, you ask? Well, it's a little like sleeping on one side all night every night. The eggs will grow "heavy" on one side. While that's normal to a degree, we wanted to be sure they weren't sticking to one side. It's that last turn at night that will "get you" in the end. Will you turn, or will you fall off to dreamland? I've done a little of both. The eggs are a little heavy on one side, but most have gotten heavy. This is always a good sign. The eggs should become heavy.
We've been adding water to keep the humidity and avoid "sticky" chicks at the end. The biggest threat when adding water is remembering eggshells are porous. When the humidity is too high, the pores are filled with moisture. Air does not travel through moisture very well, so, there is a danger of suffocation if the humidity is too high. (We are doing this somewhat "dangerously" in that we aren't working with a wet bulb thermometer.) In our last hatching experience we found that it wasn't the humidity that was a problem for us. ;')
So, it's Day 12. Wonder how far they've developed? Well, if this batch of eggs were chicken eggs with a 21 day incubation, they would be very developed. By Day 7 the chicks would have every body part, basically. They would be developing so fast that a recognizable beak would form in a day or two. If we could look inside the eggs, we would have seen the whole spine change in a matter of 36 hours.
We borrowed a wonderful book from the library that showed a lot of great pictures of the development of chicks in an egg. We were stunned at the difference in pictures in a matter of HOURS! Sadly, there are no books available to us that are specifically about quail or Buttons. It's okay, though. The boys are getting the general gist. God is making cells reproduce at amazing rates...with every cell in the right place...and the right number of cells to make the very thing He is making. So cool!
These eggs have a 17-19 day incubation. It can only be FASTER than a chicken egg! Wow.
I'm personally doing the happy dance that we're almost to Day 14. Then we get to stop turning the eggs (perfectly timed for the weekend) and wait for them to hatch. If the general data is right, we set these eggs in the morning, so they should hatch in the morning.
Yes, I will do my best to charge the camera batteries this weekend! ;')
