Welcome to My Blog!

Schooling two active boys has never been more... interesting. That's the word I'm looking for! I love my boys! God has given them the blessing of strong, active bodies and minds. We continually pray the first will remain intact, and the second will remain engaged with Him first, and then the school work. You'll meet my sweet sons, both entirely different, but both loving God to the best of their ability in the way He made them. I lovingly refer to them as my Bell Pepper Boy and my Habanero or Hambone. That should say it all! This blog is an eclectic mix. The events, conversations, and the thoughts behind it all will be in here. Every once in a while I'll try to capture something I don't want to forget. I hope you find things you enjoy. Please let me know if you do! Blessings!

Wake Up, Sleepyhead!

Posted in Boy Things
I'm not entirely sure which season we are entering with our older son. He is not yet a teen, by definition of years on the planet, but he sure exhibits some classic "teen" qualities at times. (Insert long, drawn-out sigh here.)

I love my Bell Pepper. Can we just agree on that right now? Lately, we notice he is not the natural early riser he used to be, and we've needed to address this little issue in our home. Yes, I am completely aware that teens need that extra sleep. Yes, I know they become more night owls and less early birds. But, he's not even 11 years old yet. I guess I'm feeling the need to accomplish two things: give him his own responsibility of waking himself and prepare him for a life of responsibility when it comes to timeliness.

Well, last night was the night my Dashing Hero took Bell Pepper with him to the store to pick out an alarm clock. Surely, this would be the answer to all our problems, right? I imagined a blissful morning. The alarm would sound, my son would gently drift from dreamland to reality on his own, and my floor would no longer suffer the loud *THUD* of my son's body flopping on the floor while being slightly supported by a parent's grasp. What a blessing an alarm clock would be!

Last night, we began the transfer of power to the pepper. We instructed him on the finer points of timeliness. We introduced him to his new "morning friend" who would be waking him each day. We transferred the responsibility to the young man (hoping he would respond to this new, inanimate, blameless, technological advance in his room).

Fast forward many hours to this morning...

The alarm sounded in his room. We waited to hear the evidence of the snooze button, to which he'd been introduced and practiced. No evidence. The alarm sounded...and sounded...and sounded....

Finally, the Dashing Hero entered the room to investigate the young man's progress...or lack thereof. Our son had not moved a muscle! The alarm continued blaring, and there was no response. So, quick-thinking parent that he is, my Hero traveled to the freezer in the kitchen to bring in "back up" for the next stage of morning wake up: the frozen gel pack!

No response.  (Say, what!?!?!)

(Enter the Mommy, who has additional experience in this process.)

I dragged him closer to his alarm clock. (Insert the *THUD* here.)  I placed the alarm clock in front of his nose on the floor. (No response.) The Mommy looked at the Hero and walked away.

My understanding of the next portion of the process is vague, since I was not present. I do understand the Sleepyhead may have ended up in the shower, though, with a little help. (I do not claim to know which temperature setting was employed in this part of the process.)

I know this. My Hero mentioned to Bell Pepper that he was "worried about the lack of response" this morning. He was so concerned he felt he "just had to wake him, whatever the cost!"

The young man said he didn't want this to happen again...ever.

I'm not a wagering woman, but. . . .
