Welcome to My Blog!

Schooling two active boys has never been more... interesting. That's the word I'm looking for! I love my boys! God has given them the blessing of strong, active bodies and minds. We continually pray the first will remain intact, and the second will remain engaged with Him first, and then the school work. You'll meet my sweet sons, both entirely different, but both loving God to the best of their ability in the way He made them. I lovingly refer to them as my Bell Pepper Boy and my Habanero or Hambone. That should say it all! This blog is an eclectic mix. The events, conversations, and the thoughts behind it all will be in here. Every once in a while I'll try to capture something I don't want to forget. I hope you find things you enjoy. Please let me know if you do! Blessings!

Oh, What a Beautiful Mor-r-r-r-r-ning. . .

Posted in Boy Things
Imagine it.

The sun has been gently warming the sleepy earth. The heavy dew is slowly dripping deep into the grassy lawn. It's a crisp, cool, clear June morning. Birds are nearing the end of their morning chatter and breakfast conversations with one another.  The leaves on the trees are gently and only slightly moved by the lightest breath of air in the world this morning!

Take a deep breath. Drink in the beauty of my morning, friends! I'm not sure it gets too much better than the quiet, stunning magnificence of a June morning!

Inside the bustle of the morning routine is moving along. Boys are slowly finishing their tasks.

My coffee and I are having a "moment" at the kitchen table. It's so sweet and calm at this point in the day.

Can it get any better, ladies (and gentlemen)?

The front door opens to let out our sweet chihuahua dog. That's the sign of all things complete in the morning. It's like the number "7" in God's world, as far as I'm concerned! Magnificent. Can this get any better?

The slow, easy morning is suddenly punctuated.

"Mom! C-oo-oo-ool! It's cold enough outside that steam is rising from Doodle's stream of pee!" says Bell Pepper.

*sigh*

Welcome to my boy-blessed world, friends!

Have a lovely--if not slightly altered--day, friends!

Consider the Ant. . .

Posted in Boy Things
I have returned to my "therapeutic blogging" today because I have something worthy, I suppose. I know how much you all enjoy the "boy moments" we have here, so I thought I would share.  :)  It's all boy.

Firstly, I'll share that we've been off of school for this week. I planned our Monday to be a day of cleaning. The other four days were intended to be fun days. Well, our Monday didn't exactly pan out as planned, since there were some integrity issues and such with the cleaning. I spent most of the day discussing diligence, integrity, and productivity. The boys spent a lot of time thinking about these things...in separate rooms...very quiet rooms...and my house was...very quiet.

Well, today's devotional couldn't have come in better timing! I opened the book to find that we were to take a close look at Proverbs 6:6-11. Perfect! (I just love when the things that are on my heart come to the boys from other sources, with another tone of voice, but with the same heart!) I was excited to see how we could dialog about this, given the material was a complete set up to do so!

Before I go on, there's something you should know. Our science curriculum (which I love) has been focused on "flying things" all year. It's been great! Every critter you could imagine that flies has been very good for us this year. Ants, as you may know, are winged critters. Therefore, we have studied the intricacies of their "ant-natomy" and how they are the complete opposite of "ant-i social" behavior! (You knew I had to put those in, right?) Well, to make a long study short, we are quite knowledgeable about ants and their ways. Perfect, wouldn't you say?

Me: Sons, do you find yourself wasting time sometimes?

Habanero: Yeah, Mom. We're not very good at using our time well.

Bell Pepper:
Yeah, we probably don't get too much finished very fast.

Me: How do you think you might change that?

Habanero: Well, I know I am going to get things done without being asked! Ants don't have anyone overseeing them. I shouldn't need that either.

Me: I am really excited to see how that will work!

Our discussion eventually came to an end, and the boys moved on to the things they needed to do today.

Fast forward to me finding a bit of a "boy mess" in the kitchen. I called Bell Pepper in for a little consult on the condition of a counter he was responsible for cleaning.

Me: I know I'm not supposed to be checking up on you, but it does seem you need to know about this.

Bell Pepper: Mom, I think we've decided we want to be ants, but we want to be drones!

Me: Hmmm. Son, I'm pretty sure that's not going to work.

Those who have studied ants will know the difference between the queen, the workers, the nurses, the scouts, and the drones. (Bonus points to the person who has some "job descriptions" on these little critters.)

*sigh*

Drones: To be a good drone, one must eat, poop, sleep, mate with the queen, and die.

Solomon, can we talk?

Somehow, this became the ANT-ithesis of what I was hoping for....

Wisdom Out of the Mouth of a Boy

Posted in Boy Things
Our devotional this morning happened to relate to giving God our first and best in everything. I secretly loved that the chosen Bible passage was from Deuteronomy and was related to the Fest of the Passover and the Feast of Weeks. This means our Bible time was out of the Old Testament this morning, so it might seem fairly unremarkable to some, maybe most.

As we drifted from our original focus of giving God our first and best, the topic shifted to the balance of the Old Testament and the New Testament in our spiritual development. (No, we're not hearing from a boy yet in this blog, but we will!)

It seems some folks believe the Old Testament to be, well, old. It appears to them to be unrelated to their relationship with God simply because they themselves are not Hebrew, and they relate to Jesus and the ministry to the Gentiles that seems so prevalent in the New Testament.

Habanero has an opinion on this. (I know you're shocked.)

"Mom, the Old Testament is important! Without the Old Testament, you wouldn't hear from David! You wouldn't learn from Solomon! And, you wouldn't know that "the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge"! You wouldn't know about Moses being used to free the Israelites from slavery in Egypt! We *have* to study the Old Testament! It has something to say about the New Testament!"

Did I just hear that from my almost 8-year-old son?

There are moments that make my heart swell with pride. I get to share these special moments with my boys...and no one else does! Am I selfish?  ;')

I hope your week is off to a great start, friends! I'll make you a deal: you pray for me in my week, and I'll pray for you in yours.

No Child Left Inside...or Behind?

Posted in Boy Things
Not sure if you will quite understand my title today. It's Friday. We are at the end of a long week. It's been an interesting one, but we have conquered it, since we are "more than conquerors in Christ."

Today is our first day of something resembling spring in a long time. I've been excited to think we might get to ditch our parka-like coats in the near future.  :')  So, outdoors is my tool today...the incentive for the boys to be productive in the morning and have a fun afternoon outside.

So, spelling is one of my main goals with Habanero today. We are trying to move him along in this area that has not been a complete favorite for some time. Wise mom that I am, I sent the child out to write his words on the deck in chalk. You should know we have been blessed with a rather large (albeit old) deck. A child might do the math and realize there is approximately 500 square feet of area to utilize out there.  ;')

And use it he did!

I came out to an excited, bubbly seven year old just beaming over his accomplishment. Yes, the problem word (family) was written no less than 25 times all over the lower deck. Yay! Mission accomplished. Then I took a quick glance at the rest of the deck which had some interesting "notes" in similar chalk.

Daddy must be coming home soon, and Habanero must be excited at the thought. He wrote several "notes" to Daddy on the steps leading up to our back door. (That was so neat for me to see.)

Apparently, the dog had chosen a warm spot to sun herself on the deck. How do I know? Well, a big, chalky arrow pointed to a spot and had the words "Brin's butt" written next to it.

Habanero apparently sat down on the deck at one point, too. Yes, there was another oversized, chalky arrow and "[Habanero's] butt" written there.  *sigh*

Well, I don't suspect we will have trouble with words containing a short vowel and two consonants following. Do you? Or, maybe it's just one particular word with a short u and two t's following.  *sigh*

Have a great weekend, friends!
