Go Bible

I just discovered the coolest device. It is called Go Bible.

It is like a little MP3 player, but it has all the books of the Bible. You can even select the passage you want, right down to the verse. How cool is that? You can't do that with Bible tapes or CDs. It also has a category where you can select certain "stories" from the Bible.

DH's cousin was here the other day and she showed it to me. She said she uses it while doing housework, lying in bed at night, or on car trips.

Anyway, this is the coolest thing - a really neat way to listen to the Bible.

This is definitely going on my list of things I want to have. :-)

Here's the website with more info.: www.gobible.com

She said she bought hers at their local Christian bookstore.

Discipline and Self-Control

More Bible study notes.

So...what does the Bible say about discipline and self-control? Let's find out!

Discipline of the Church

  • 1 Corinthians 5:5 To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.
  • Titus 3:10 Warn a divisive person once, and then warn him a second time. After that, have nothing to do with him.

Self-Control

  • Proverbs 16:32 He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city.
  • Proverbs 25:28 He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.
  • Romans 6:12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.
  • 1 Corinthians 6:12 All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.
  • James 3:2 For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body.
  • 2 Peter 1:5-7 For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love.

Various scriptures regarding discipline, self control, and how to obtain them

  • Romans 6:13  Do not offer the parts of your body to sin, as instruments of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God, as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer the parts of your body to him as instruments of righteousness.
  • James 4:7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
  • Matthew 5:29 If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.
  • Romans 6:6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
  • Romans 8:13  For if you live according to the sinful nature, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live,
  • Romans 13:14 But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfill the lusts thereof.
  • Galations 5:16 This I say then, walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the lust of hte flesh.
  • Colosians 3:5  Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.
  • 1 Peter 2:11 Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;
  • 1 Peter 4:2 That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God.
  • 1 Corinthians 9:27  No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.
  • Galations 5:24 And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.
  • Titus 2:2 That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience.

Promises of answer to prayer

  • Psalm 91:15 He shall call upon me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him.
  • Isaiah 58:9 Then shalt thou call, and the Lord shall answer; thou shalt cry, and He shall say, Here I am...

Reasons for unanswered prayer:

  • Proverbs 21:13 Whoso stoppeth his ears at the cry of the poor, he also shall cry himself, but shall not be heard.
  • Proverbs 28:9 He that turneth away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer shall not be heard.

So the LORD Almighty was very angry. Therefore it is come to pass, that as he cried, and they would not hear; so they cried, and I would not hear, saith the Lord of hosts:
  • James 4:3 Ye ask, and receive not, becasue ye ask amiss, taht ye may consume it upon your s.

Strife

Here are some scriptures from my Bible studies on the subject of strife:

Notes:

He that is of a proud heart (or greedy spirit) stirs up strife. see Proverbs 28:25

Strife is a practice/work of the flesh (it is lumped in with impurity drunkenness, carousing). If you do this you will not inherit the kingdom of God. see Galations 5:20

Scriptures to look up:

1 Corinthians 1:10

* Exodus 17:12 - unity to sustain in times of weakness

* Matt. 18:19 - unity gives added power in prayer
Matthew 18:6-7 Woe to him who causes offense
Matthew 18:15 Go to your brother if there is strife between you
Matthew 18:22 unlimited forgiveness
Matthew 18:23-35 the unmerciful servant

Scriptures concerning strife:

  • 2 Corinthians 13:11  ...live in peace; and the God of love and peace shall be with you.
  • Phillippians 1:27 Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel.
  • Ephesians 2:14 For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down teh middle wall of partition between us.
  • Proverbs 17:14 The beginning of strife is as when one letteth out water: therefore leave off contention, before it be meddled with.

  • Proverbs 20:3 It is an honour for a man to cease from strife: but every fool will be meddling.

  • Proverbs 25:8 Go not forth hastily to strive, lest thou know what to do in the end thereof, when thy neighbor hath put thee to shame.

  • Proverbs 26:17 He that passeth by, and meddleth with strife belonging not to him, is like one that taketh a dog by the ears.

  • 2 Timothy 2:24 And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient.

  • James 3:14-18 But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth. This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish. For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work. But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.

Causes of Strife:

Hatred - Proverbs 10:12 Hatred stirreth up strifes: but love covereth all sins.

Pride -  Proverbs 13:10 Only by pride cometh contention: but with the well advised is wisdom.

Contentious spirit -  Proverbs 16:21 As coals are to burning coals, and wood to fire; so is a contentious man to kindle strife.

Anger -  Proverbs 29:22 An angry man stirreth up strife, and a furious man aboundeth in transgression.

Foolish Questions - 1 Timothy 6:4; James 3:16

1 Timothy 6:4 He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings.

2 Timothy2:23 But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do gender strifes.

Strife in church:
  • 1 Corinthians 3:3 For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?
  • 1 Corinthians 6:6 But brother goeth to law with brother, and that before hte unbelievers.

Strife in family:

  • Exodus 13:8 ...Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee, and between my herdmen and they herdmen; for we be brethren.
  • Proverbs 18:19 A brother offended is harder to be won than a strong city: and their contentions are like the bars of a castle.
  • Proverbs 19:13 A foolish son is the calamity of his father: and the contentions of a wife are a continual dropping.
  • Proverbs 21:9 It is better to dwell in a corner of the housetop, than with a brawling woman in a wide house.
  • Psalm 21:19 It is better to dwell in the wilderness, than with a contentious and an angry woman.
  • Proverbs 27:15 A continual dropping in a very rainy day and a contentious woman are alike.

James 4

  • verse 1 - wars/fighting/contention comes from our evil lusts
  • verse 7 - how to overcome them and gain God's favor: "Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you." also verse 8
  • verse 11 - "Speak not evil one of another, brethren. He that speaketh evil of his brother, and judgeth his brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgethe the law: but if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge."
  • verse 12 - "There is one lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy; who are thou that judgest another?"
  • verse 17 - Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth itnot, to him it is sin."
