The Gender War

More men than women, it seems, choose to study math or science in college. Rememer to a feminist, choice is a bad thing if it isn't the choice they would make. So the feminists are crying "discrimination" and threatening to sue the university to end the disparity. For a few days, it even seemed like the Bush Adminstration was going to get involved in fixing the problem.
No stranger to battling the feminist agenda, Phyllis Schlafly shares her thoughts at Town Hall on what's really going on;
Not so says Debra Rolison of the Naval Research Laboratory. She believes women are "experiencing a different climate" than men. To me, that's code for, "they don't cater to us". My heart breaks for these women. Welcome to the real world. I survived the climate and graduated with a degree in Computer Science. Are you saying that women today are weaker than the ones 25 years ago and need extra help? There isn't a shred of evidence that women are discriminated against in math and science; there are no separate tracks for men's math and women's math. There simply is a higher proportion of men than women who voluntarily choose math and engineering just as more men choose competitive sports.
The feminists want a quota-imposed unisex society regardless of the facts of life, voluntary choice, human nature, common sense, or documented merit. And they use the power of government to achieve their goal.
Schlafly makes a good point later in her article, citing the obvious disparity in the number of women to male teachers in our public schools.
Meanwhile, the Bush administration ignores the gender disparity that is having very hurtful consequences: the precipitous decline in male schoolteachers. The number of male public school teachers has fallen to only 20 percent, and at the elementary school level fewer than 10 percent of teachers are men, giving boys the distinct impression that school is not for them. And it seems to be working. According to a NY Times, a report is being released today declaring Boys Are No Match for Girls in Completing High School.
Nationwide, about 72 percent of the girls in the high school class of 2003 — but only 65 percent of the boys — earned diplomas, a gender gap that is far moreIf anyone needs a "climate change" it's our boys. So will we hear the feminists demand more male teachers to end the disparity, provide a positive role model, and "save our boys"? I wouldn't hold my breath. While the feminists rage on; our boys sit in bored, Ritalin induced stupers. They, in time, become the unmotivated men that Leonard Sax wrote about in the Washington Post and that the Boys Project seeks to now help.
pronounced among minorities, according to a report being released today by the Manhattan Institute.
Thankfully, there is a generation of kids who have escaped the clutches of the feminists and are free to be the young men and women that God created them to be.

Absolutely, it's the boys who need some attention. Talk about the boy, er, I mean the feminists who cried "wolf".......
I blogged about it myself last night at Jacobs Academy ~

So true! Sadly, boys are getting the short end of the feminist stick. Who is going to stand up and protect their rights? Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this.
I also wanted to thank you for your great article on blogging in the newest issue of TOS. Excellent as usual.

I guess there are different kind of feminists, because I consider myself one. Sure there are radicals, but there are those in every group. I guess I just read this and think that are you using the word as a negative and should it be?

What is your definition of a feminist?
To me a feminist is one who adheres to the belief of feminism. That being that men and women are equal. Men and women aren't equal. Simple biology shows this to be true. There are substantial differences. Neither is superior to the other. But there are differences. And within those differences is an order. In that order, God made man the head over the woman. Just as God is head or "authority" over the man. But it is a loving God who is our authority. He demonstrated his love for us in this, while we were yet sinners he died for us.
So also are men to love their wives as Christ loved the church. Giving himself up for her. So if one britstles at the idea of men being head over a woman, they would also find Christ being the head of the church a problem.
I have yet to meet a feminist who would agree that a man should be a head over a woman.

"I support the rights of unborn women everywhere."
(OK, I did not come up with that myself, and I'm not sure of the proper attribution. But it does express my current main thought about feminism. :) )
My mother-in-law got a masters in math in the 1950's, and was a computer programmer in the 1950's, as well. She only ever had one person remark that women should not be in math, and doesn't consider discrimination to have been a big deal. (For those who are wondering, she programmed by moving vacuum tubes around in a tray! She had a low-level [male] assistant whose job was to pull the trays out for her.)
My husband is currently a computer programmer. He says that this one field is very much NOT discriminatory in any way. The only question is, "Does your code work?" It is not male over female, white over other ethnic groups, whatever. If you can code, you are "in." If you can't, you aren't. (It doesn't even matter super-much whether you can speak English, as most code is written in other computer languages. (Now, perhaps he doesn't see it, but in the coding rooms, at least, nobody cares who you are, and all coding rooms he's been in have been pretty well mixed. Yes, there are more guy-geeks than girl-geeks, but all who are there are respected and do fine.)
This sort of issue bugs me, too.
I guess choice only counts when it's re. killing babies, not when it regards what I want to do with my life and my days.
