Help!

Desperate mother of 6 seeks tips for suriving the sweltering heat wave without AC. Here's what we've done so far,
Starbucks, but I can't just sit there all day and not order anything.
So we went to the library, they let you sit there all day.
But the electricity went out, so they sent everyone home.
So we went to the community sprinkler park,
Until sunburn threatened to take over my farmers tan.
So we went to Max and Erma's and spent way too much on dinner, but fast food was a little too fast for us.
Then we went to gorcery store #1 to get ice cream. They were out of everything but Hagen-Daz. Not to complain, that meant more time in the van which has AC.
So we went to grocery store #2. Score! They had a huge bucket of Neopolitan on sale.
Hubby makes shakes for all takers. Body temps finally return to "normal" range.
Pretend to sleep.
Wake up and stand in front of the open freezer to cool off until the condensation begins to form puddles at my feet.
Drove to Wal Mart and tried on clothes until the manager started suspecting us of shoplifting.
Bought Slurpees for the third time in 24 hours. Sympathetic to our plight, they made us members of the frequent Slurpers Club and gave us one for free!
There were also a few hose fights thrown in there somewhere.
Any more suggestions?
I thought about pretending to have a kidney stone and spend the night in the hospital, but I'm not sure our insurance would cover it and insurance fraud is a crime anyway. And now that I've confessed my sinister plans here, they'd have too much evidence for a "not guilty" plea. Of course, there's always the "not guilty by reason of insanity" defense. That may work given my delirious state and the pure nonsense of this post. I think I could get a jury to buy that don't you?
And then there's always hijacking the ice cream truck. We were almost successful once when I was a kid. Oops there I go, incriminating myself again. I better stop now.
Sympathy, suggestions and Starbucks cards gladly accepted!

I shared my ideas a few days ago with a prayer group I'm in. Since it was long, I put it on my blog.

You could always move to Florida. There's no such thing as a house without A/C down here.

I had to read this post outloud to my whole family! We are very thankful for our AC since we live in the desert. It is regularly over 100 for about 5 months here. I recommend lots and lots of showers. I take at least 3 a day. I am the cleanest sweaty person for miles around! LOL Hope it cools off soon for you!

I'm really sorry to hear about the heat trauma y'all are having to deal with up there - I know it is really not the norm for y'all. We are having 115 heat indexes yesterday, today and for the next days w/100 temp's. And even that is extreme for the South.
....Do y'all have a YMCA indoor pool anywhere close?....errr....fake staying at a hotel w/an indoor pool......oh yeah - that's that same illegal/incriminating stuff again. Give everyone a blank notebook and go window shopping at the mall and everybody list what they like and in the end what they might have spent.....yuk - I agree - I don't see that one either. Dollar movies? Family you really need to visit in Alaska?
We're a bit stir crazy down being housebound except having to go out to hose down chickens to keep them from suffering from the heat..........may as well have school this week.
Hang in there and keep us posted.

We had a recreation family pass. But it expired about a month ago. We haven't been able to renew due to the fact that we needed new tires on the car. I don't do the mall thing. Yuck is right.
I'll keep you posted. We're supposed to get a break tomorrow. We'll see.

You could put a bowl of ice cubes in front of a fan and sit in the breeze. We did this two summers ago when our unit broke down for 8 days. It helps, some. Library, food court at Walmart or Target, how about your church fellowship hall? Maybe if you call your pastor and plead your case?

Here's my idea :) Make friends with those that have A/C in their house and invite your family over. (That's what my "friends" have done to me.)

You could always come visit me at IKEA (Then again you wanted a nice escape not one filled with Chaos and to be honest it gets hot in there too). Hope to get a chance to meet again! Kacy

Dig a really big hole and fill 'er up...with ice! Sorry you are suffering so. I cried when I opened the electric bill, but the air is still running and I am grateful to have it! Praying for cooler weather to be headed your way!

This probably won't help, but- we open the windows at night and pull the cool air in with a fan. Then I close them early am to keep the cold air trapped inside all day. An attached shed acts like a cool-air bank, too.
I really like your blog-roll by state. Are you accepting blogs for it? I'm in VT.
Hope you get a cool breeze soon- maybe a huge thunderstorm will come along and break things up.
Listen, not to go on, but I authentically sympathize. We lived in Raleigh, NC for 6 summers. We got there in a heatwave; I was 7 1/2 months along carrying our 2nd, and we had 2 more children there.
I didn't have air until the last 3 summers (then, a window unit.)
Here's the real answer: really, get a window unit! You can all camp out in the bedroom with the air. Besides, you can cool a few rooms or the upstairs with it. The electric bill...well, God does provide! My husband was a student back then. I finally gave myself permission to stop suffering. Does MI get bad heat often?
OK, thanks for entertaining my late-night ramblings.

We do that every night. Unfrotunately, the last few nights haven't been much cooler than the day. Today there seems to be a breeze so I think tomorrow will be a lot cooler. We'll see.
I'll add you to the VT section when I get a chance.

Heat Wave, huh? Been hearing a lot about that. Have a friend who moved into a shed (yes a shed) that she purchased while waiting for the lease to expire on a house she is buying. No A/C and TONS of bugs for her and her girls. Could always be worse.
Down here in FL everything is A/C, guess that's a bonus, until a hurricane takes out the power for weeks. LOL!
Ok, it's not much different than the library, but we head to the bookstore (Barnes or Books a million, because they have more than just books to look at.
A few more free outtings with a/c are the pet store, toy store (as long as you don't buy anything), and Sams,,,because they give free snacks. LOL! They even have really nice outdoor furniture that is nicer than my indoor furniture. tee hee!
One other thing we have done when our a/c broke, was to hook up our rv. But I guess you have to have one of those to use it AND it made our electric bill go through the roof. So scratch this one.

When I was growing up, we took a few trips across country, through the desert. I thought my dad was horrible for not turning on the AC in the car. (He didn't want the car to over heat and get stranded.) It was so hot! He made us eat ice chips to help keep us cool. It really worked! So perhaps you could get an ice crusher and make some snow cones! I hope it cools off soon for you. I am ready for fall myself.

Praise God, we had rain and much lower temps today.
