Are they really learning???

This question really bugs me!!!!!!!    I am so often hit with this as well as my husband and it really frustrates me.  Are you kids really getting what they need?  Are they being exposed to enough opportunities?  Like what?  Do you mean vulgarity, pornography, drugs, crude behavior, and the list could go on and on and on.

I won't get on my soap box here but if I wanted my kid to learn about premarital sex, evolution, disrespect for self -- authority-- and others, then surely I would have sent them to public school but I am NOT sorry that I want to protect them and keep them safe.  I know that "not all schools are bad"  but you know all schools have bad things that happen at them.  And if you tell me that is not true then YOU ARE FOOLING YOURSELF.  And also lying to yourself.

Anyways yes my kids are learning.  I even got to watch them read in front of a crowd of 200+ and of course they were nervous---especially Lolly---but she did just as good as the 5th grader from Kingston---who was also very nervous.    Things are going well and next week we get back into the swing of things after beeing off for a couple weeks for family time and VBS.

We have been home schooling 5 years now and I have never been 'confronted' with such prying and personal questions!
I have heard the "what about socialization" and I have heard "aren't you afraid you will miss the high school experience".........but when it was said, it was in a very ""I don't get homeschooling, help me understand"" kind of way.

My daughter is getting ready to take the CLEP test for Biology. It covers many things.........including evolution.
I told her answer them with truth. Even if the silly humans think it's wrong!

The" socialization" card some try to play is ridiculous!
Your post was well said :)
Thanks for stopping by my blog. To answer your question about tax free weekend.... I live in Mo. and every year they have a tax free weekend before school starts. This year it was Aug.1-3
This enables you to purchase the following tax free

Clothing with taxable value under $100.

— School supplies under $50.

— Computer software under $350.

— Computers and computer equipment under $3,500.
Not sure if other states participate in this or not
It does help save a bit on purchasing school supplies though.
Blessings

Aug. 13, 2008 - I'm dealing with this too.

It's a bit different for me. My family hate the idea of me homeschooling. I just pulled my children out this summer and will be homeschooling them starting in September.

They admit the schools all have those problems. Their questions to me are: If you don't put them in school how are they going to learn to deal with those problems? They won't know how to deal with a bully, or with opposition. They feel that by homeschooling them I'm Sheltering them from learning how to defend themselves against life. I really don't know how to answer their questions.

I know that it is hard but Ken Hamm had a really good interview in the School House Magazine about sheltering our kids. It may be something that you want to read. It could help with giving reasons for doing what you are doing. But remember most of all we do not account to others just to God for what we do with our kids and those that we account to hear on earth are nothing to the Account we have to make in eternity. Happy Schooling and Have a great time with your kids. It will be fun and hard all at the same time. Remember that roses have thorns. :)
