When I was younger, I went through a phase of just wanting to "fit in". So, I began frequenting the same hang-outs as my wilder friends, using the same words, even changing the way I dressed. In it all I lacked discretion.
Titus 2 teaches that older women should teach the younger women to be discreet. I was thinking about that word this morning, "discreet", and began wondering, "How does discretion apply to believing women in the modern church?"
"Discreet" is the same word that is translated "sober" in some versions of Titus 2:5. If you are "drunk" on anything of this world, you lack discretion. If you stagger along the course that you and your husband have charted for your family, you lack sobriety. Anything of this world which keeps us from steadfastly, purposefully, pressing on towards the things of Christ should be considered an intoxicating cup. If stopped on the roadside, would we pass a spiritual breathalizer test?
Some questions to consider:
-Are we addicted to the Internet? surfing for deals? getting the scoop?
-Are we easily tossed about and thrown off course by the latest curriculum fads, newest programs, or hottest ideas?
-Are we unwilling to press on in our labors of love when the "going gets tough"?
-Are we prone to outbreaks of anger, impatience, or frustration when others (including our husbands and children) don't meet our expectations?
-Are we more focused on the temporal--things like our houses, yards, and dress--than on thespiritual nourishment that goes on in our homes?
-Are we prayerfully purposeful as we plan a daily course? Are we able to walk a straight line or does the computer, television, or fruitless activity cause us to stumble?
-Are we serious about our roles as helpmeets, loving mothers, and godly women?
1 Peter 1:13-16
Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober , and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; as obedient children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts, as in your ignorance; but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 because it is written, "Be holy, for I am holy."
