Nov. 29, 2009 - Time of Giving

(everything in this blog post can be copied and pasted into your own blog.  I give full permission!  We all appreciate the word being spread about our adoption fund raising efforts. )

It is the time of year, when many people consider giving.  Salvation Army bells are heard at every store.   Canned food drives can be found everywhere.  It is also the time of year, when families like ours, are anxiously awaiting the day when they will have their first Christmas with their new adopted child.

A lot of you have followed our journey this far, as we go through the process of adopting an infant from here in the United States.  You are all familiar with the various fund raising efforts we have been making.  Our puzzle fund raiser, selling coffee through Just Love Coffee Roasters, and selling T-shirts through Mission Threads.  But did you know that there are TONS of other families from all over the world making the same efforts as us?  I have met a few of these families, and encourage you all during this time of year, to consider these families when you go to support a charity.  Just like us, they are doing all that they can to raise funds so they can give a child a home.

That Stever family is a beautiful family with a heart for orphans with down syndrome.  There are so many special needs children around the world that need homes.  The stever family is also raising funds for their adoption.  I encourage you to visit their blog, and if you feel led, leave them a donation.  Their donate button can be found toward the bottom of their site.

Dawn is an adoptive mommy of two little girls from China, and is raising funds to bring home two more children from Ethiopia.  She is selling handmade blankets and custom wooden growth charts in order to raise funds for their upcoming adoption.  Her items would make wonderful Christmas gifts!  Stop by her blog, and take a look!

The Langton Family is another family anxiously waiting to bring their child home.  They have already been matched with a little boy name Alex.  You can follow their journey of bringing Alex  home on their blog.  Like us, I am sure they are dreaming of the day when they will have their little Alex home with them.   Their donation button can be found in their sidebar.  Every donation, no matter how big or small, will get the Langton family one step closer to bringing their little boy home where he belongs.

I was very blessed to also visit the Sisemore’s family blog.  Just as the Stever family has a heart for orphans with down syndrome, the Sisemore’s have a heart for orphans with cerebral palsy.  They have one adopted child from China, and they are doing a bunch of other fund raisers so they can bring their little boy Jeremiah home from China as well.  Jeremiah has cerebral palsy.   You can take part in any of their fund raisers, and get them one more step closer to bringing Jeremiah home.  Here are all the links you need to know about.    Jeremiah’s Promise, tax deductible sponsorship, magazine fund raiser, and they are also selling coffee like us!

God has laid it upon the hearts of the Hodges family to pursue adoption.  They too are going through the adoption journey.  They were blessed with two biological children and are now praying that God will bless them with an adoptive child.  You can follow the Hodges family as they do what they can to bring a child into their home.  You can find their donation button in their sidebar.

Another family waiting to be united with their adoptive child, is the Calvaresi family.  They are waiting, and raising funds so they can bring their little girl Ana-Sophia home.  Ana-Sophia was diagnosed with developmental delays and autism.  By sending a donation to the Calvaseri family, you are helping make it possible for them to bring Ana-Sophia  home where she belongs.  You can read their whole story, and leave a donation by visiting their site.

The Aus family is waiting to bring their son Chase home from China.  They were blessed with two girls from China earlier, and now they are anxiously awaiting the day when they can add Chase to their family.  You can follow their story, and even chip in a little toward Chase’s adoption by visiting their family blog.

The puzzle piece fund raiser, has been the most fun and rewarding fund raiser so far.  We are not the only one’s doing it either!  The Burgess family is also doing a puzzle piece fundraiser.  Their puzzle is coming together really fast! They are doing an international adoption from China.  You can donate through their chip in button, or you can make a tax deductible donation through Kingdom Kids Adoption Ministry.  Just mention it’s a donation for Kevin and Karen Burgess’ adoption.

Adam, is an 11 year old boy in China, waiting for his family to pick him up.  Beth and Mark are raising funds to be able to adopt this young man.  It is very touching reading about their adoption journey, and the things they are doing to be able to scrape up the funds necessary to bring Adam home to them.   You can help them to be able to afford their adoption by sending them a donation.  By clicking their chip in button in their sidebar.

The Wibes family has two fund raisers going on so far.  The are selling coffee through Just Love Coffee Roasters, and using onecause.com.  Onecause.com (which I gotta look into for us!)  is really neat!  .  You register and choose the national adoption foundation as the cause and then benefit crediting to babsie95@yahoo. com.   Then you continue on with your online shopping like normal!  Brilliant!

The Boettler’s are another family digging up financing.  All of us families who are going down the adoption path, is familiar with bumps in the road.  The Boettler’s have overcame obstacles, and are now waiting to be matched with a child from China!  You can help the Boettler’s overcome the financial obstacle, by donating toward their adoption fund. Their chip in button can be found in their sidebar.

Taking in special needs children is a big undertaking.  I was so inspired today by reading about the Boyd family.  They have adopted 7 children from various places in Eastern Europe, and are now in a crunch trying to raise funds to bring home 3 more children waiting for them in Bulgaria.  Their story is amazing!

These are just a small handful of families who have hearts for adoption.  All of them are willing to go through this huge process, and spend all of their finances, in order to give a child a home.  These children have the hope of having a forever family.  There is no better way to support the orphans (James 1:27) than to help unite them with the families that are so desperate to reach them.  Please consider helping some of these families!

Even if you are not able to donate to any of these families’ adoption funds, I do encourage you to at least stop by and read their stories.  And if you are up to it, copy this blog post, and post it on your own blog!  The more the word is spread the better.  I pray that these families will be blessed.

The Telfer Family Puzzle Update

It’s been a while since I have posted any pictures of our puzzle, or given an update.  I am sorry about that!  Unfortunately, the only camera I have is on my phone.  I wish I could be taking photographs with a really nice Nikon D90, but for now, all I have is my blackberry.  So please excuse the blurryness!

I have had a couple of new sponsors over the last couple of months.  One from my cousin in California, and the other today from a random blogger.  Thank you so much!  We have rounded the corners, and have the top and most of one side of the frame together.

puzzleupdate

Here is what it looks like so far!   When ever we get a sponsorship come in, the kids get really excited.  I always shout out  ” We get to build on the puzzle today!”  Then I tell the kids who sent the donation, and we write the name on the back of the puzzle piece.  Here is Anna and Gable putting in today’s sponsored piece.  And like I said, the picture is REALLY blurry. But oh well.  I even caught the stroller and the baby swing in the shot! We have been storing baby items in the bedroom, anxiously waiting till we can have a new baby sleeping in there.

gabeannapuzzle

Thank you today, to  Alison Lowry! We have 66 puzzle pieces sponsored. 996 to go!  When we reach 1000 we will have half of our adoption paid for.

Nov. 28, 2009 - Various and sundry notes...

After spending most of the week feeling scatterbrained and like time was disappearing too quickly for words, today's duties kind of fell into place--at least so far.  I cleaned this morning, did the budget stuff this afternoon, and have meals planned for the week.  (One can at least hope that things run smoothly enough during the week that I can cook what is planned.)

Yesterday the kids and I went for a walk before breakfast.  As always, when I go out at that time, I am so thankful that I don't have to scramble around in the mornings to get the children ready to go on the bus to school.  We walked down to the park, and watched the geese on the river.  I was delighted to try out my new camera on some outside photos.

Yesterday was also our children's first time ice skating for this winter.  Belle ventured out without any support at all, from the beginning.  She fell a few times, but not nearly as many as I thought she might after not skating since March.  Boo took a chair on the ice for support, but soon gave it up as he got his "ice legs" back.  They both did very well.  Skating happens Monday and Friday afternoons, however I don't plan to go on Mondays until I finish the history Core that we are still working on.

I have finally found a pair of shoes that are wide enough and comfortable enough that I can wiggle my toes.  My orthotics fit nicely.  I still have pain in my feet, and I have to do stretches before I get out of bed in the mornings, and during the day, but the situation has improved immensely!  I don't have nearly the same amount of pain that I had when I first started seeing the chiropodist in the summer.  I am grateful to the store for ordering a wider size for me since they didn't have it in stock.  I was still able to purchase them at their sale price.

Now if I don't get off the computer I will be slipping behind for the evening.  I still have to plan lessons for the week, finish making cinnamon buns for tomorrow, see that the children are bathed,  and hopefully spend some time cross-stitching if I'm not too tired this evening.

Oh dear!  Just realized that what I thought was chili leftovers from the freezer happens to be pasta sauce!  So glad I hadn't already started the rice!  Surprise supper.

Geese flying just after taking off from the river.

Still a few autumn colours around.

Nov. 28, 2009 - Just Checking In

I hope everyone's Thanksgiving was great and no one went comatose from overeating...

I seemed very strange not having our own brick and stick house to celebrate in, but no worries, our gracious hosts left theirs open for us to enjoy and we surley did.

I am suprised we are still here in the Silver Sub, the leaves have fallen and Brother's garden have begun to be plowed over, we even had us a little frost on the trampoline the other morning.  Time for a season change.

There were many good days this Fall:  Katey's LONG awaited initiation into "Young Peoples", finally happened ~ the anticipation was much more than I thought she would be able to bear (sp?).  Now there is only Alexis left to move up... 2 years to go, such a long long time in the mind of a 12 year old ~ sigh...

Fall ment a couple trips back up to Donner and some visits with friends and more hiking.

And more hiking...

Sigh... and MORE hiking...

Oh and more fishing

Seems after more than 20 years of going up to the cabin one would have already discovered the "good fishin hole"... somethings take time....

Speaking of time:  I think SOME had a little more idle time than they knew what to do with!

Fall also means the "Fall Festival" at church ~ everyone always love its ~ this year Sam got his first taste.

Katey took home a couple trophies herself for coloing and the skit... Seems she was the "winner of the day"!

Thanksgiving morning the boys were heading out to do some Salmon fishing ~ not realizing until the night before Salmon were "off limits" to the fishermen.  Does that get a good (or should I say determined) fisherman down?  They say "nah"... SO they geared up for Steelhead and had a blast.

braving the cold...

Battling nature itself....

To bring home the bounty!

Oh wait ~ Kiss and release???

Oh well.

I was thinking the other day of a morning a few years back ~ We were still in the Castle and we woke to find it had snowed all night.  Looking out from the upstairs balcony to nothing but a blanket of white as far as the eye could see.  It was really sureal; but that wasn't the best part.  The best part was the many rabbit trails that marked the ground ~ SO cute.  I had actually only seen one rabbit at the Castle, but according to these thails, there had to be hundreds ~ Wiley little citters!

On a sad note ~ today our Son-in-law left for Afganistan ~ I didn't make time to get with him and talk like I wanted ~ for that I am sad ~ My heart is broken at the thought of Kristin and Kylie being alone and for Caleb who hasn't yet begum to know what is means to be "at war".  Please ad the 3 of them to your prayers...

Well that's all for today ~ it's back to the cozy bed for me and getting rid of this nasty cold ~ and NO I haven't been kissing any pigs!

Nov. 25, 2009 - Happy Thanksgiving Everyone

~In Everything Give Thanks~

SO YOU WOULD KNOW

How many times must I prove how much I love you?
How many ways must my love for you I show?
And how many times must I rescue you from trouble,
For you to know just how much I, I love you?

Didn't I wake you up this morning?
Weren't you clothed and in your right mind?
When you walked up on this problem,
Didn't I step in right on time?
When you were weak and on life's journey,
Didn't My angels carry you?
So you would know,
So you would know,
So you would know,
Just how much I, I love you.

How, how many days must I build a fence all around you?
How many nights must I wipe all your tears away?
And how, how many storms must I pull you safely through,
For you to know just how much I, I love you?

Didn't I wake you up this morning?
Weren't you clothed and in your right mind?
When you walked up on this problem,
Didn't I step in right on time?
When you were weak and on life's journey,
Didn't My angels carry you?
So you would know,
So you would know,
So you would know,
Just how much I, I love you.

Oh didn't I put food on your table,
Show up when the bills were due?
And when that old pain was wracking your body,
Didn't I send healing down to you?
And when you were lost in sin and sorrow,
Didn't I die to set you free?
So you would know,
So you would know,
So you would know,
Just how much I, I love you.

Nov. 23, 2009 - Now Serving...

In my younger days, I worked a variety of jobs in the food service industry. I’ve waited tables, tended bar, and even flipped a hamburger or two as a short order cook. I’ve worked in a greasy spoon diner, a cookie-cutter chain, an elegant, and expensive, dining “establishment,” and even a real-life version of the neighborhood bar where everyone knows your name. I’ve served singles, couples, families, and friends. I’ve served salad to students and beers to bikers. Even a celebrity or two has graced my tables. Yet, in all that time, and after all those people, I have never served a group of people who were nicer or more grateful for that service than the people I served last night. Last night, I served dinner at alocal homeless shelter.

Let me take a moment here to back up and explain how I ended up serving pieces of cornbread to total strangers. The women’s ministry of my church, Warehouse 727, wanted to do something in the community. We knew we wanted it to matter. We just didn’t know what to do. We’re a pretty diverse group and trying to agree on something was near impossible. However, we noticed that whenever the call went up for food, the Women of Warehouse delivered! These ladies can cook! Abundantly! Pot lucks and picnics are a veritable feast with each lady trying to outdo the next. We’re discreet about our passion for feeding people, but it’s there. So, we took that passion and decided to bring dinner to Pinellas Hope, a local shelter that houses roughly 280 homeless people. What an unforgettable experience! Eighteen ladies stepped up to cook and serve chili, cornbread, and cookies to the residence, and boy, did we have fun!

Honestly, I didn’t think we’d pull it off. We’re a pretty small church. Where were we going to find enough volunteers to cook and serve almost 300 people? Money is tight for everyone these days. Most schedules are even tighter. Yet, in spite of my doubt, God smiled. Everyone ate their fill. In fact, most people returned for second, thirds and even fourths! Yet, there was still enough left over for lunch the next day. Talk about loaves and fishes! I never get enough of seeing Him in action!

Remember a paragraph or so ago when I mentioned I’m a food service veteran? Anyone who works in the food service industry knows that Tipping is not a city in China. It’s their livelihood. Even though I haven’t worked in a restaurant for a few years, I remember the importance of that little something extra at the end of the meal.  However, I knew I was going into this to serve others as selflessly as I could, and I didn’t expect to receive anything. Well, I was wrong about not receiving anything. I was tipped, abundantly!! These men and women were some the nicest, friendliest people I have ever met. I don’t know any of their stories yet, and I suppose that doesn’t really matter for now. They thanked us, joked with us, laughed with us, and blessed us. They complimented the food outrageously, and even asked if we’d come back again. But more important, God was there. You could feel Him in that kitchen, watching over the least of these. It was an evening of fellowship not only with the Women of Warehouse and the residence of Pinellas Hope, but also with the Lord. To me, tips don’t come any bigger than that, and all I did was hand out some cornbread!

I’m not going to tell you about how this experience made me more grateful for my home and family. I won’t promise to never whine again over my ugly kitchen floor that starts to move if I use too much water when mopping or the “artistic” appearance of the outside of my home (three sides are blue but the front is white. Don’t ask.). And I won’t blather on about how much more thankful I am for the miracles God has performed so that I can stay home and teach my children. Just knowing there are 280 people out there who need a homeless shelter should be enough to stir all those feeling. No, I’m not going to go on about my own epiphanies. What I will tell you is that if God sends the opportunity your way to serve “the least of these,” take it. When we serve as He would have us do, He shows up as only He can do, and He makes sure you know it!

If you are in or near Pinellas County, Florida, please, look into serving dinner atPinellas Hope. Just click on their name anywhere in this blog to go to their website. If you are not in the area, find a shelter in your own area and, of course, check with your church. You might be surprised by the unpublished needs in your own church. I’ve also included another resource that can help you find a place to serve in your area. There’s a website called Volunteer Match that can match you with places that need volunteers in your area.

Thank you for stopping by! I hope the holiday season inspires you to serve the needy in your community. Better yet, I hope that you don’t stop!

Betty
