Homeschool open house

Good evening everyone!!  Tiany has graciously set up an open house and I have been enjoying hopping around to everyone's school house!

http://www.homeschoolblogger.com/Tiany

Grab a cup of tea or coffee and let me introduce myself.

My name is Michelle and I've been married to my wonderful hubby for going on 11 years.  We are a military family and currently living in Japan.  We have three children, Trey 9, Hallie 6.5, Courtnee 4, and another expected in October.  We have been homeschooling since the beginning.

Decision to homeschool:  Homeschooling was something that we discussed from day one with our son.  Being a military family, it provides our children with stability and the flexibility of taking time off when dad comes home from deployment and also allows time for family visits whenever we wish.

Our classroom:  Is our dining room.  We, unfortunately, live in only 1200 sq feet and every inch of space is used.  We have four large bookshelves that hold many reading books (I am stocking upon the classics) and all of our books that we use for school.  Since we are overseas, the library isn't really an option here.  Two years ago, while preparing a study of ancient Rome and Greece, I went to the base library and got the only book on each subject that they had.  Needless to say, we spend alot of money on books.

Our Curriculum:

Trey:  We are using AOP switched on Schoolhouse for science and bible this year.  One reason is that it will allow me time to work with Hallie without constant interruptions.  Trey has been struggling with reading on his own, but has made huge improvements this year.  I'm certain by the end of this year, he'll be at his grade level or higher.  Constant interruptions and inconsistancy did not help learning to read two years ago.  Last year we were more on track and he improved greatly.  However, I still have to sit with him and help him with most of his lessons.

The other reason for using AOP is to lessen up my work with a new baby.  I probably need to explain that a little.  I am going to have a schedule c-section.  Complications with my other labors is why I'm going in that direction.  Also, my husband will be gone when the baby comes and not home until the baby is about a month and a half old.  Being overseas, having family come in is not really an option, so I'm making life as uncomplicated as possible.

For english, spelling, reading, writing, math, and history we use Bob Jones.  I wanted easy planning this year and I love their curriculum.  Next year, we will be back on track doing science and history together as a family.  We are also going to do a unit study on Australia and Africa this year.  Australia is already planned and I will have Africa planned before the baby comes.

Hallie:   Will be using Bob Jones for everything.  I do have the dvd program, which somedays works and somedays doesn't, depending on the mood she's in.  I'm not a huge fan of dvd programs, but I feel that I need every little bit of help that I can when the baby comes.

Courtnee:  Studying the alphabet and numbers

Our Daily Schedule: is not set in stone yet.  Both Hallie and Trey go to the school for speech therapy and I do not have their schedule for the upcoming year yet.  Basically, our days look like this:

8:30-9am   Work with Courtnee while Trey and Hallie work independently.  Hallie can work on coloring, etc and Trey will be working on silent reading, spelling, handwriting, science, and bible

9-10am  Work with Hallie.  Courtnee can color and do puzzles and listen in.  Trey will continue his independent work.

10-10:15  Snack and I read a story from the bible

10:15-12 Work with Trey on reading, math, and english.

12-12:30 lunch

12:30-1  Read aloud

1-2:30  Mondays and Tuesdays are history

Wednesdays are for science.  Although Trey does AOP, I still want to review all he has done and do experiments and reading together.

Thursday-geography-our units on Australia and Africa

Fridays-finish up any work that hasn't been finished during the week

My schooling:  Yup, mom needs to do school also.  I was trying to finish my bachelor's but have put that on hold until after the baby's born.  In the meantime, I am reading, reading, reading.  I have several classics on the table to be read.  I'm in the middle of '20,000 Leagues under the Sea' and 'Great Expectations'.  To be read are 'Last of the Mohicans', 'Les Miserables', and 'Robinson Crusoe'.  I also have several historical fiction books to read.

For bible studies, I am currently working on 'Homeschooling with a Meek and Quiet Spirit', which I love.  I also have 'Blessing my Husband' and 'Homeschooling at the speed of Life' lined up to do.

I love to read, quilt, scrapbook, do genealogy research, and spend time with my family.  I also love to bake.  I hate to do laundry (probably because my machine and dryer are in a closet) and dust.  Thankfully, the kids are getting older and can help out in those areas more.

Thanks for spending time at my classroom!!  Look forward to visiting yours!

First, I would like to say thank you to your family for the sacrifices I know you make as a military family. I pray that the typhoon will not cause much damage, preferably no damage.

Good luck with the new baby. You certainly have your hands full!

Thanks for sharing your homeschool. When my dh and I first married he was in the AF and we lived in Britain for 3 years. What a blessed experience...our ds1 was born there as well. We live in Fl and fully understand the impact from hurricanes...the two we lived through in 04 (when I was pregnant with ds4) and just one year later in 05 were enough to last us a lifetime! Good luck with your homeschooling this year and your new blessing to come.

Sounds like you have a good plan to deal with the upcoming changes. I had 3 of my kids C-section so I know how draining that can be. I'll pray everything goes well for you and the baby.

Have a great year!

Aug. 3, 2007 - Hi there!

Thanks for opening your home for us to visit :) I know what it is like to live overseas and far away from family. You are doing a great job! Although it is sometimes hard, it is also such a great experience for the children, our kids have learned so much from it.
I also have the longing to live off the land one day. I've dreamed about it for years - even when we were in the desert in the Middle East! Now we are back in Australia and not there yet, but I keep hoping!
I'd love to share some bread recipes and preserving stuff with you. I plan to have them up on my website one of these days.... time, ah, time!
Love,

Joy

I really reading enjoyed about your homeschool. I'm always reading too. I haven't read "Last of the Mohicans" or "Les Miserables" yet, but I love your other selections. Charles Dickens is my favorite.

Thanks for sharing!

Your in Japan!
It's so interesting reading of other homeschooler's days and especially interesting when you live so very far away. In answer to your question... I like using English from the Roots Up. I almost gave it up. I thought 'I can't teach this...I know nothing about it!'
Then I changed my mind and decided I would just read to them from the book, without my teaching or explaining.
It works! They learn just from the reading.

Hi! As a user of SOS for over 6 years now, I can vouch that you will need to follow up on what your son is doing! I love love love SOS and its automatic lesson planning and grading, but it can't check up on your son for you. We use it for Language Arts, Science, and History - our oldest has graduated and the younger two are in grades 11 and 9 this year.

I also love that you're educating yourself. I used to long to get more education, then I realized I can. My husband is a pastor, so I'm helping myself to his library for some in-depth Bible study this year, and I'm expanding my knowledge of music theory and taking some free online art classes. I'm pretty excited about my school too! LOL

Hi! I enjoyed reading your post.

Thank you for your service to our country. Your sacrifices as a military family are definitely appreciated.

I so understand the small house thing. We homeschooled for several years in a 700 sqr foot trailer. (We were a family of five at the time.) It takes extra organization but being so close really can bring your family close, if you know what I mean. It can be a blessing.

May you be blessed in every way,
Michele

Hi again!
My daughter's name is Kyra Jimenez and she works both dental and medical. She is very pretty, cheerful and great with kids! We miss her so much! If you happen to run into her, tell her that her family misses her and if she'll let you, give her a hug from me!. We haven't seen her since March and we're hoping she can come home at Thanksgiving. I'll try and post a picture of her on my blog-maybe you'll recognize her.
Oh I almost forgot! Your homeschool room looks GREAT! We live in a small house (1700 sf) and I know how important it is to maximize use of space! We use our breakfast room for "study" and we'll use the dining table for science projects. Reading takes place anywhere and everywhere!

Have a GREAT, SUPER, FABULOUS School year!
