Need some help!

With all of the cough syrup for children being taken off the shelves, at least they're doing that here in Japan, I need to find a homeade remedy.  Does anyone have a recipe for cough syrup.  I've found a few online, but would really like to try to get one that has been used before.  Also, can anyone recommend a good book on homeade remedies?

Thanks!

That is what I found when I googled homemade cough syrup. I cannot vouch for any of their effectiveness. I know that when I used to be sick all the time (pre-tonsillectomy) that the drs just told me to suck on any hard candy (like jolly ranchers) and just take tylenol to help with sore throat/coughing. I find that cough syrup doesn't really work, except Delsym, which knocks them out. Anyway, my two cents, not worth more than that. Hope you figure something out and if you do use one of these remedies, let us all know as I am curious to know if they work.

this is from recipegoldmine.com

Cough Syrup

(to relieve sore throat and clear congestion)

1 ounce fresh horehound herb
2 ounces water
1 tablespoon powdered slippery elm
1 to 2 ounces honey

I haven't used it - but it will be the one I use this season since the medicine's have been taken off the shelves. I have used horehound hard candy for sore throat before, and slippery elm for coughing. There is a tea called Throat Coat that I have used and is very effective. It also has the slippery elm in it, and marshmallow root I believe.

I have also mixed honey and vinegar in hot water and drank that. A friend just mixes the honey and vinegar and takes it by the spoonful.

Here is another site that I consider reliable: http://www.bulkherbstore.com/need-a-remedy?id=jxc6tNaC

I hope the recipe works well for you. I forgot to add the instructions... they might be helpful :)

Add horehound to the water. Boil down to one ounce of liquid. Strain and mix into the slippery elm and honey. Take no more than 2 tablespoons every two hours, and only use for a few days.

My "favorite" comment about socialization came from a vetenarian when we took our dog in for shots. He asked why my dd wasn't in school and I said I homeschool. He took a long look over her and said.... well, she seems to be doing okay. Well, THANKYOU! LOL

Congratulations on the new addition to your family! Your children are beautiful. I read your comment on Brownie's blog and thought I could help with the question that you have difficulty responding to, "How could you stand to be home with your kids all day long?" I always smile and say, "Court order!" and walk away. If I didn't smile and walk away, I'd end up saying, "Why bother having kids if you're not going to raise them?" which is a better answer but quite confrontational.
