Lately, I have been hearing a lot from my friends about their families reactions to adoption. It seems like when you decide to adopt, family members automatically think that they can give you their opinion. When a woman gets pregnant, family members are, for the most part, happy for you.
When we told family that we were going to adopt, we got lots of opinions and unsolicited advice. I allowed this to upset me, and actually let it steal some of my joy.
If I could turn back time, I would have not enterained the fears I did. I would not have let comments and attitudes rob me of the joy and exictement of adopting our son.
In adoption, not every child adjusts easily. Some blend in with no problem. Some take time to warm up to you. Some children are seriously grieving. But does that mean we should not do what God wants us to do? We were not put here to live a comfortable life. We were put here to be Jesus' hands and feet in this world.
So dear friends, just remember you are in God's will. Everything that happens in life, good or bad has happened because He has let it happen. Go forward with joy in your heart while you are in the adoption process. If your child is having difficulty when they come home, remember to ask for God's grace and wisdom in prayer. He will not leave you nor foresake you.
Stand strong and know that the only one you need to please is God. If you try to please man, you can't please God.
Psalm 127:3-5 (New Living Translation)
3 Children are a gift from the Lord;
they are a reward from him.
4 Children born to a young man
are like arrows in a warrior’s hands.
5 How joyful is the man whose quiver is full of them!
He will not be put to shame when he confronts his accusers at the city gates.
