County Fair
The Dallas County Fair is this Thurs.-Sat. and the kids worked like mad to get their entries ready. I felt bad because we were short on time this week due to other committments so not everyone turned in items and even the kids that did turn things in didn't turn in all that they wanted to. Oh well. That's how it goes some years.
While standing in the check-in line yesterday we saw six other fellow homeschool families also rushing in at the last minute to turn in their entries :)
Zech placed first for his chocolate chip cookies.
Ben placed first for his pottery entries, second for his drawings of knights and second for a few photos of a butterfly, redbud tree in bloom and a bluejay.
Luke placed second for his whole wheat oatmeal raisin cookies, first for a photo he took of Laura and second for a flower photo.
I was very surprised that Jonathan didn't want to enter his drawings this year. Laura was upset because she wanted to enter a baked good item but due to her age was restricted to a non-bake item (which she did last year). Plus we just plain ran out of time. Well, like I said...there's always next year.
No one won best of show this year as they have in years past but since everything was so last minute I don't think any of us expected it. Harold and I are proud of what the kids did accomplish and turn in though :)

Well we had 3 solid weeks to work on everything and Devin only entered 4 of his 8-or 20 items he wanted to. This time we decided we need all year to prepare (the best we can anyways, lol) so we tacked the newspaper on the wall and will be working on some of them when we feel like it...which I hope won't be 3 weeks before the fair! You mentioned meeting homeschoolers last minute...I really think homeschoolers made up a large # of the entries! In the woodworking department there were 8 entries 6 were homeschoolers 1(#7) was a boy who homeschooled until this year and I am not sure if the other one (#8) was a homeschooler or not. It was just so funny! Well we had a blast, my husband and I were a little disappointed in turnout. Some items like Stuntman's birdhouse was the only birdhouse. We will probably start doing Ozark along with our local fair. It just gives us more competition. If we can we might even do State...next year though, grin!
Good to see ya there,

Yeah, that's what all of the homeschool families were joking about in line. We all say we're going to work on stuff all year, keep the newspaper insert with the catagories and then we don't...we usually make a mad rush a week or two before!
The Dallas Fair Fair has had low attendance in the 13 years we've lived here and I know the fair board has tried to make changes to improve attendance. They welcome suggestions though :)
We've talked about entering the Ozark Empire Fair but always forget to preregister ahead of time. About the time I think "When is the preregistration deadline?" I learn I have already missed it :( This year I found out while in the check in line for the Dallas County fair that the deadline for registration at the Ozark Empire Fair was the day before. Oh well.
We would love to enter the state fair but the drive is just too long to make so many trips up there and back to check in entries, pick up entries, actually attend, etc. I should re-look into it though...maybe they allow entries to be shipped now.
Nice to see you all there at the fair too. Glad you had fun!

Oh I would say more money...but with the cakes offering $50 and only 4 entries...that probably would not do the trick. My best advice would be for them to call other fair leaders and ask them what they do. That is what I would do.

Hey- Thanks for dropping by my blog and dropping a comment. :) I was half worried that with a title like I used, I may get some upset people. But then I thought....oh well!
It's nice to find kindred spirits. And I think it's way cool that you're a photographer. I'm a freelance writer...
