The end of another great summer of reading!

Posted in Contests

Wow!  Can you believe that our 10 weeks of reading have come to an end? I'm sad that it's over because I love spending all this extra time with my friends during the summer.  But, just because our summer reading program is over, doesn't mean that you should stop reading!

On the contrary, I hope that you will continue reading and that you will continue sharing with me.  Remember to send me your book reports, book reviews, poems, and short stories.  I love posting them on my blog!  When you e-mail me, don't forget to include your first name and age.

Now, because I love sharing books so much, I'm going to tell you about all the great ones that you can win when you go here and tell me how many books you read this summer (you don't have to turn in your reading logs - just have your Mom or Dad help you fill out this form with your information).  I have LOTS of books to give away and I'll do a separate drawing for each one; so be sure to check off the ones you're interested in winning.

Please join me in saying a HUGE THANK YOU to the generous authors and publishers who graciously donated books for our giveaway! I would encourage you to follow the links to their websites in the 3 posts below and check out ALL of their great books.

Don't forget - go here to fill out your information and sign up to win FREE books!  Sign up by August 30th.  Winners will be announced in September.

PARENTS - share your reading lists here!

Posted in Contests

Yesterday, I posted a contest for the kids, along with a place to share their Summer Reading Lists with me.  Today, I wanted to post a place for you PARENTS to share your Summer Reading Lists as well.  And, because I love books and promoting reading, I even have some to share with YOU!

Jessie Stone has spent thirty-five years fantasizing about marriage proposals, wedding dresses, and falling in love.  She’s been a bridesmaid eleven times, waved dozens of couples off to sunny honeymoons, and shopped in more department stores for half-price fondue pots than she cares to remember.

But shopping in the love-of-her-life department hasn't been quite as productive.  The man she thought she would marry cheated on her.  The crush she has on her best friend Blake is at very best…well, crushing.  And speed dating has only churned out memorable horror stories.

So when God shows up one day, in the flesh, and becomes a walking, talking part of her life, Jessie is skeptical. What will it take to convince her that God has a better love story than one of the thousands she’s cooked up in her journals?  Will she trust Him with her pen when it appears her dreams of being the bride are forever lost?

A romantic comedy with a spiritual twist, Never the Bride is what it means to lose control—and getting more than any woman could ever imagine.

Cheryl McKay is the co-author (with Frank Peretti) of the Wild and Wacky, Totally True Bible Stories series, which has sold nearly 200,000 copies, and the screenwriter of the award-winning film The Ultimate Gift. Rene Gutteridge has published thirteen novels including Ghost Writer, My Life as a Doormat, the Boo Series, the Occupational Hazards Series, and the Storm Series. Together, McKay and Gutteridge are the authors of The Ultimate Gift, a novelization based on the feature film and popular book by the same title.

It’s 1905 and the Chicago Cubs are banking on superstar Donald “Duke” Dennison’s golden arm to help them win the pennant. Only one thing stands between Duke and an unprecedented ten thousand dollar contract: alcohol.

That’s when sportswriter David Voyant whisks Duke to the one-horse town of Picksville, Missouri, so he can sober up in anonymity. He bides his time flirting with Ellie Jane Voyant, his unofficial chaperone, who would rather hide herself in the railway station ticket booth than face the echoes of childhood taunts.

Ned Clovis, the feed store clerk, has secretly loved Ellie Jane since childhood, but he loves baseball and the Duke almost as much–until he notices Ellie Jane may be succumbing to the star’s charm.

Then there’s Morris, a twelve-year-old Negro boy, whose only dream is to break away from Picksville. When Duke discovers his innate talent for throwing a baseball, Morris might just have found his way out.

Four individuals, each living in haunted isolation, each harboring a secret passion. Providence brings them together. Tragedy threatens to tear them apart. Will love be enough to bring them home?

Allison Pittman
spent seventeen years as a high school English teacher, and then shunned the advice of “experts,” quit her day job and set out to write novels that bring glory to God. She relishes inspiring other writers and leading the theater arts group at her church. She and her husband and three sons live in Universal City, Texas.

Splish is so excited!

You may not have been aware of this; but, this past summer, while you were all busy reading and participating in the Summer Reading Splash program, Splish was just learning to read!
Learning to read is a very exciting thing and we at The Old Schoolhouse Magazine
wanted to share with you about Splish's journey...
Gena Suarez, our publisher, has written a book called
And Then Mama Said, It Takes Time to Learn to Read.

As part of our National Young Readers Week Giveaways
we have 10 copies of this book to give away.
We know you'll enjoy it as much as we do!

Splish has TONS of books to give away this week.  I am going to list them by numbers, along with pictures and descriptions.  If you see one that you'd like to win, please e-mail me.  In your e-mail, please list the # of the book(s) that you'd like to win.  If more than one book or book set appeals to you, please send a different e-mail for each entry.  I will file them under their appropriate number and have a drawing for each book/set at on Friday. In your e-mail, in addition to listing the # you want to win, also include your first name and age, please.  (If you e-mail me, but don't follow these guidelines, your e-mail will be deleted.)

For example:  if you have 2 children (Bobby and Mary) - Bobby wants numbers 1 and 6 and Mary wants numbers 3 and 12, I will need 4 e-mails - 2 from Bobby (one for each #) and 2 from Mary (one for each #).  If you have any questions, please leave a comment (with a way to reach you) or e-mail me.

1. The Old Schoolhouse Magazine is donating And Then Mama Said, It Takes Time to Learn to Read - the story of our mascot, Splish.

This endearing book introduces Splish , who longs to read - all by himself. Mama tells Splish to be patient and keep trying, and one day it will happen. Splish wants to believe Mama, but he still sulks and gets frustrated. In the end, perseverance and patience (everyones) are rewarded!

*These  books will be autographed by the author.

2. The illustrator of the Splish book (above), Kevin Scott Collier, has a new book of his own that he'd like to share.  In addition to being an amazing illustrator, Kevin is also a writer.  His newest book, Professor Horace Cryptozoologist, follows an eccentric old man on a journey to discover the secrets behind some of the world's most famous legends and mythological creatures. As Professor Horace, Cryptozoologist, ventures into the unknown, he encounters  Big Foot, the Loch Ness Monster, and the Ropen. The myth seeker becomes myth himself.  This is a fun tale written in rhyme - sure to delight young readers.  (All proceeds from the sale of this book go to the Christian school that Kevin's son attends).

*This book will be autographed by the author.

3. Author Susan Marlow is donating a copy of Book 4 in the Circle C Adventure series - Andrea Carter and the San Francisco Smugglers.  Along with the book, you will also receive a little doll, handmade in China.

Recently, I had the privilege of reviewing some cute children's books - the Rooter & Snuffle series by Shari Lyle-Soffe.  You can read my review here.  If you would like to win this 3-set series of books, please e-mail me and tell me what your favorite subject in school is! I will draw and announce a winner on Saturday, August 30th.

Here is a summary of the books:

Th_rooter1_ First in the series is The Misadventures of Rooter & Snuffle.  This book follows the tales of two racoon brothers as they rely on their faith to see them through difficult, and sometimes dangerous, times. They learn to find the answers for themselves. And although these brothers may not always agree on everythign, in the end they always care about each other.  The three short stories in this book are: "The Search," "Rooter's Rule," and "Danger at River Bend." This particular title also includes a 4-part activity page for extra fun.

Th_rooter2_ The second book is called On the Go with Rooter & Snuffle. In this book, the young brother raccoons find that others may not always see things the way they do. But when troubles and disagreements do arise, they are no match for a strong faith, the love of a brother, and the help of good friends.  This one includes short stories entitled "Why Our School Stinks," "Follow a Star," and "Something is Fishy."

Th_rooter3_ Third in the series is Trouble Finds Rooter & Snuffle. Once again the rascally raccoon brothers aren't looking for trouble but it finds them anyway. As they look for a way out of trouble, they learn true friendship isn't selfish, everyone is special, and we can all protect wildlife by caring for the environment where we live.  The 3 short stories in this title are: "My True Friends," "The Pity Party," and "Yes We Can."

a book giveaway!

I know you kids have all been eager for another book giveaway!  I have been too, because I LOVE GIVING THINGS AWAY!  I have recently received some fun children's books to review; so I thought I'd share them with you by giving them away.  You can read the full review, but here are the book summaries:

Godgaveusheaven

“What is heaven like?”

With tender words, her Papa describes a wonderful place, free of sadness and tears, where God warmly welcomes his loved ones after their life on earth is over. Little Cub and Papa spend the day wandering their beautiful, invigorating arctic world while she asks all about God’s home: How do we get to heaven? Will we eat there? Will I get to see you in heaven? Papa patiently answers each question, assuring her that…

“Heaven will be full of everything good.”

This gentle story provides satisfying answers for a young child’s most difficult questions about what happens after this life, inviting “little cubs” to find comfort in knowing that God Gave Us Heaven.

Dcover

How much love does God have for me?
More than the letters between A and Z. More than the bumbles in a bumble bee.
God loves me more than that!

As your child revels in each lively rhyme and engaging illustration from this delightful picture book, they’ll learn that God loves them deeper than a wishing well, wider than a semi-truck, louder than thunder, and softer than a kitten’s sneeze.

Each question, presented with charming child-like faith will help your child grasp the great love of God through comparisons and descriptions they can easily understand. In short, they’ll discover that His love is bigger, wider, higher, and deeper than anything they could imagine!

Dcover2

When God created my toes, did he make them wiggle? Did he know I’d giggle?
Did he have to hold his nose, when God created my toes?

This charming picture book allows your child to imagine what it was like when God created them. From the top of their heads to the tips of their toes they will explore and understand God’s delight in creating them.

Through rhyming lines and vivid illustrations children will gain confidence and self-esteem when they begin to fully realize how perfectly, intricately, and uniquely God created them.

If you would like to receive one of these  books, please e-mail me telling me which book you'd most like to win and why.  I'll put all the names in a drawing (we'll have 3 winners) and announce the winners on Saturday, the 23rd.

Book Giveaways for the Week of July 14 - 18

Posted in Contests

This is Week 9 of the Summer Reading Splash!  After this week, we only have one more week to go!  It has  been decided that we will leave the Splash blog open throughout the year.  I will be posting book reviews and reports that YOU submit to me.  And, who knows?  We may even have an occasional book giveaway, just for fun.  So, DO NOT stop reading the Splash blog!  You just never know what might pop up here.

This week's topic question is:
In a story you've read recently, which character would you like to be?  and why?
E-mail your answer by Friday (the 25th) at midnight - winners will be announced on Saturday (the 26th).
PLEASE REMEMBER to put STORY or CHAPTER either in the subject line or somewhere in your post - people are continually forgetting to do this and I am having to guess as to which book(s) you might like to receive.  Also, remember to include your FIRST NAME and AGE, please.
AND, DO NOT leave your answers as comments on the blog.  ONLY ANSWERS RECEIVED VIA E-MAIL will be entered into the weekly drawings.  THANK YOU!

Now, for this week's books:

For our younger readers, we have THREE  great books from Master Books.

A one-of-a-kind rendition of the classical story of Noah and the ark! Written by legendary Oak Ridge Boys member William Lee Golden, this charming story echoes the lyrics of the enclosed FREE music CD featuring the song “Didn’t It Rain” performed by the award-winning group. Adorable illustrations and the cute story will delight children as they learn about the animals and their adventure on the ark. A fresh and appealing story destined to be a child’s classic!

What is God’s purpose for me? It’s something everyone wonders about, even small children. With a world that is so big all around them, young children can be overwhelmed by the thought of trying to accomplish anything. Follow the charming story of Grandpa Mouse’s journey to the ark as children see how they too can accomplish big things despite (or even because of!) their small size. Illustrated by Bill Looney, the colorful illustrations bring the heartwarming story to life.

What is Babel, what happened there, and why is it so important? Many kids don't know the answers to these questions as biblical knowledge is becoming less and less of a priority in people's lives. This fun format book is a great way to teach kids about the reality of the Babel story and its significance in their lives.

The full-color book explains how the different languages and "races" came about and is in unique format with one large pop-up that stays up as you turn the pages and read the story. The stunning artwork is both beautiful and realistic, as it is based on the actual worship towers that were built in ancient times. This fun tool is a great way to teach the reality of the biblical story.

For our older readers, we have a 2 book set by one of my favorite authors, Stephanie Reed (who also happens to have a blog right here at HSB!)  Stephanie will be sending these books directly to the winner, as she will be autographing them!

The red brick home of Rev. John Rankin is a beacon—the first northern stop on the Underground Railroad. Across the Ohio River in Kentucky, every slave knows to look for it. They have heard that if they reach that house, they will never be captured. Across the Wide River tells the true story of the selfless sacrifices one Christian family made to help runaway slaves reach freedom.

You can read my review of this book here.

In this powerful sequel to Across the Wide River, the Rankin home is still a beacon of freedom on the Underground Railroad. Johnny, the seventh of thirteen children in the Rankin family, is growing up quickly and in 1837 is eager to take on the same responsibilities as the rest of his family. But Johnny’s father and his brother Lowry think Johnny is too young and too hotheaded to help with something as important and secretive as the Underground Railroad. Johnny understands the need for secrecy, but sometimes the secret is just too good to keep to himself! This engaging novel for young adults offers a further glimpse into a dark period of America’s past, and profiles the courageous and godly people who helped bring about its end.

You can read my review of this book here.

Book Giveaways for the Week of July 7 - 11

Posted in Contests

Wow!  I can hardly believe that we are entering Week 8 of our Summer Reading Splash.  That means that, after this week, there are only 2 more weeks  to go!  Can you believe how fast our time is flying by?

I have some great books to give away this week (and in the upcoming weeks), but first........
This week's question (from Ed Dunlop, author of The Terrestria Chronicles):
Have you ever thought about writing your own book?  What would you write about?  Would it be a book for children, teens, or adults?
Please DO NOT answer this question in the comment section.  ALL answered must be emailed
TO ME.  Entries must be received by Friday, the 11th, at midnight.  Winners will be announced on Saturday, the 12th.  Please remember to put STORY or CHAPTER somewhere in your answer, so I know which set of books you'd like to win.

And now, for this week's giveaways:
For our younger readers, I have 2 great storybooks by Sleeping Bear Press (one of my very favorite publishers of children's books!)

 Willow
Author Denise Brennan-Nelson, Rosemarie Brennan
Illustrator: Cyd Moore
Published by Sleeping Bear Press

Miss Hawthorn's room is neat and tidy, not a pencil or paintbrush is out of place. And that's how she likes it. And she likes trees that are colored green and apples that are painted red. Miss Hawthorn does not like things to be different or out of the ordinary.

Into Miss Hawthorn's classroom comes young Willow. She doesn't color inside the lines, she breaks crayons, and she sees pink trees and blue apples. What will Miss Hawthorn think?

Magical things can happen when your imagination is allowed to run wild, and for Miss Hawthorn the notion of what is art and what is possible is forever changed.

Willow is the first joint writing effort for sisters Denise Brennan-Nelson and Rosemarie Brennan. Denise's other Sleeping Bear Press books include Someday Is Not a Day of the Week and My Grandma Likes to Say. She lives in Howell, Michigan. Rosemarie Brennan juggles careers as a writing teacher and an author. She lives in Brighton, Michigan.

Cyd Moore studied graphic design and fine arts at the University of Georgia. Her work includes posters, billboards, books, newspaper and magazine articles, and cassette and CD covers. She is the illustrator of I Love You, Stinky Face and I Miss You, Stinky Face. She lives in Commerce, Michigan.

A Isn't for Fox: An Isn't Alphabet
Author Wendy Ulmer
Illustrator: Laura Knorr
Published by Sleeping Bear Press

Experts know that sometimes the best way to teach a child what something is is to teach him what it isn't. Educator Wendy Ulmer applies that principle in her jaunty, out-of-the-box alphabet A isn't for Fox: An Isn't Alphabet. Running through the alphabet, beginning readers are given a letter and then told what the letter topic isn't.

A isn't for box;
it isn't for fox.
A is for ants that
crawl over your socks.

Laura Knorr's colorful, engaging artwork perfectly captures the wit and whimsy behind the alphabet that isn't what it seems but is so much more!

For our older readers, I have a set of 3 books from  YWAM publishing - 2 from the Christian Heroes: Then & Now series and 1 from the Heroes of History series.

As America's first foreign missionary, Adoniram Judson spent thirty-eight years working in Burma, then one of the most hostile countries on earth. Judson was ignored, mocked, beaten, and tortured, yet he never lost sight of his goal to translate the Bible into the Burmese language. Sustained by God's provision, George Müller's vision of caring for orphans grew to five large homes that ultimately over ten thousand children would call home (1805-1898).

This best-selling, missionary biography series - Christian Heroes: Then & Now - chronicles the exciting, challenging, and deeply touching true stories of ordinary men and women whose trust in God accomplished extraordinary exploits for His kingdom and glory.

Once a kidnapped slave baby, George Washington Carver (1864?-1943) found freedom in learning everything he could about the world around him. Overcoming poverty and racism, George became a brilliant scientist and a gifted professor who dedicated his expertise to helping black farmers escape the devastating grip of poverty.

Heroes of History is a unique biography series that brings the shaping of history to life with the remarkable true stories of fascinating men and women who changed the course of history.

Name our Froggie Mascot Contest!

Posted in Contests

We had an overwhelming response to our mascot naming contest!  We went through each and every e-mail and made a list of ALL the name ideas.  Then, we went through that list and crossed off all duplicate names and names that are already in use by other famous frogs (such as Kermit).

We then took that list and allowed the TOS staff to vote for their favorites.  We have taken the top 9 TOS favorites, and have compiled a poll for you to vote.  Voting will be open until next Thursday, June 26th, at NOON (est).

Please note: We have set this up so that each member of your family should be able to vote, if they so choose.  Please be honest and only VOTE ONCE PER PERSON.  Thank you!

Book Giveaways for the Week of June 9 - 13

Posted in Contests

Wow!  This week I've got some great books to give away!  But, first you need to know what this week's topic is.....

(This is a question from Ed Dunlop, author of the Terrestria Chronicles)
Would you say that reading is better than watching TV or movies?  Better than playing video games?  Why or why not?  Which do you enjoy most?

*Don't forget, when you e-mail me your answer, please put STORY or CHAPTER in the subject line so that I know which book set you would like to win.  Also, please give your first name and age - your quote may be used in a future post on this blog!

For our younger readers, I have a great set of books by Kregel Publications.

The Candle Discovery Series is a new set of interactive, educational books for younger learners. Moses built a great tent in which to meet God. How was it constructed? These interactive, graphic guides with tabs to pull out that display a second acetate picture with more detail, answer these questions and more. Living in Bible Times is a fascinating guide to important buildings and structures in the Bible.

The book is filled with the delightful illustrations and simple text that have made the Candle Bible for Toddlers series so popular. How did Abraham get to the Promised Land? What was the Holy Land like in Jesus’ time? These interactive, graphic guides with tabs to pull out that display a second acetate picture with more detail, answer these questions and more. Journeys Through the Bible includes maps and special features of six important journeys of well-known Bible characters.

These books are JUST PLAIN FUN!  Not only are the filled with great information about the Bible, but they are fun to look at.  I almost hate to give them up!

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Kregel is also donating our set of books for older kids this week.  I have a set of 3 books by one of my favorite authors - Susan Marlow (who just happens to blog right here at HSB).  These books are all part of the Circle C Adventure series (click the link to view the Circle C blog and find out the latest happenings on the Circle C Ranch).  Here are the books:

ANDREA CARTER & THE LONG RIDE HOME
Horses, adventure, and the old West—mixed with a solid message for today's tweens—make this a must-read for tweens. Twelve-year-old Andrea "Andi" Carter attracts trouble the way her palomino horse, Taffy, attracts flies on a hot summer day. Andi's entire family and the staff at the Circle C Ranch treat her like such a pesky kid that she sometimes wonders if they would all be better off without her. After a particularly scary incident where Andi gets in trouble once again, she saddles up Taffy and runs away from home. But her escape quickly leads to frightening encounters with a horse thief and a vicious young lady. All of which makes Andi realize that there really is no place like home.

ANDREA CARTER & THE DANDEROUS DECISION
In this sequel to Andrea Carter and Long Ride Home, Andi nearly tramples her new teacher in a reckless, impromptu horse race down the main street of Fresno—not a good way to begin the school term. Then between the teacher's irritating daughter and an escaped convict that rushes into the schoolroom, Andi shows her true character—and discovers the true meaning for the Golden Rule.

ANDREA CARTER & THE FAMILY SECRET
Andrea “Andi” Carter returns in her third nail-biting adventure. Even after dealing with escaped convicts and wild horses, Andi isn’t prepared for her latest surprise: a sister she never knew she had. Katherine left the family when Andi was just a baby, and a heap of trouble has followed her now that she is back. Andi finds herself not only dealing with Katherine’s sudden appearance, but also a mysterious drifter named T. J. Silver, who has a lot to hide.

Susan is also the author of the Reach for the Stars writing program - this is the e-book that we are GIVING AWAY this month at the Schoolhouse StoreTo receive your copy and learn how to become a better writer (and have fun doing it!) just make a $30 purchase at the Store.

OK, and now, just because I can, I am going to give you a sneak peek at Susan's 4th Circle C Adventure, which goes to the printer this Friday!  In Andi's 4th adventure, she is sent to stay with her aunt in San Fransisco after a flood rushes through Fresno and her school is closed down.  In San Fransisco, Andi is sent to a boarding/finishing school where she makes friends with her roommate and meets a little Chinese slave girl named Lin Mei.  Andi does all in her power to rescue Lin Mei from slavery.  Do you think she will suceed?  You'll have to read the book to find out!  Here is the cover of the new book - San Francisco Smugglers.  My daughter Gracie is the cover model for Lin Mei!  We got to read the book several months ago and we think it's the best Circle C Adventure yet!

REMEMBER: As always, entries are due by Friday at midnight (EST).  Entries received after that deadline will be deleted.
IN ANSWER TO A FEW QUESTIONS: ALL HOMESCHOOLED CHILDREN may participate in the Summer Reading Splash.  This includes preschoolers and up.

Book Giveaways for the Week of June 2nd - 6th

Posted in Contests

It's time for Week 3 of our Summer Reading Splash!  We have some great books to give away this week, but first, the topic question......

This week, you will need to do a little bit of research.
Find out what your Mom or Dad's favorite book was as a child.  Does he or she still have this book?  If so, have you read it, or would you like to read it?

Please e-mail your answers and be sure to put STORY or CHAPTER in the subject line, so we know which set of books you are interested in winning.  Also, don't forget to include your first name and age - your quote might be used on the blog later this week!

Now, for this week's book selections......

For our younger readers, we have 2 great storybooks from Barefoot Books.

A Forest of Stories

Magical Tree Tales from Around the World

This unique collection of folktales, compiled by Rina Singh, encourages us to rethink our relationship with trees through the telling of fantastic tales filled with dancing palms, healing fig trees and magical cherry blossoms. Illustrated in radiant hues by artist Helen Cann and containing notes about the individual characteristics of each species, this vibrant collection will encourage all of us, young and old alike, to appreciate the essential place of trees in our lives, and help us to translate our appreciation into the desire to protect our many endangered forests.

Grandmothers' Stories - Book & Story CD

Wise Woman Tales from Many Cultures

The stories in this anthology illustrate many of the qualities of the wise woman, offering readers of all ages a new perspective on the grandmother character that is usually presented in fairy tales as either menacingly evil or dim-witted and useless. With spirited grandmothers from as far afield as Senegal and Sweden, all of these tales are rich with humor, action and suspense. A fresh and witty retelling is complemented by finely detailed and mesmerizing illustrations.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

And for our older readers, we have a set of 3 Scripture Sleuth books:

There's an exciting new mystery in each chapter of the Scripture Sleuth books (12 mysteries per book!).   Whether it's catching a clever thief, solving a puzzling disappearance, or exposing a hilarious scam, readers follow Concord Cunningham's entertaining investigation of each case.

Concord, an ace detective, always cracks the case.   But here's the Scripture Sleuth twist:   Concord doesn't give away the solution at the end of a chapter's mystery.   Instead, he gives readers a Bible verse to look up.   That verse holds the final clue to the chapter's case.   So, readers must open a Bible, read the clue, and try to solve the mystery.

To see the TOS reviews of this book series, click here.

Have fun with this week's topic!  Be watching for a similar topic (except with your grandparents) coming in a future week.  DON'T FORGET~ all e-mail entries must be received by MIDNIGHT on Friday, the 6th.  Week 3 winners and quotes will be shared on Saturday, the 7th.

Here are this week's book selections:

Our STORYBOOK selection for this week is Bambi's First Day - another great book from Sleeping Bear PressBambi's First Day beautifully conveys the love of mother and child - a bond not only experienced by humans but in the animal world as well.  In this release for young readers, the story focuses on early moments of the young deer's life.  Lush paintings by award-winning wildlife artist Gijsbert van Frankenhuyzen lovingly depict newborn Bambi and his mother's tender devotion.

Every little while she raised her head and,
listening, snuffed the wind. Then she kissed
her fawn again, reassured and happy.
"Bambi," she repeated. "My little Bambi."

Taken from the original work Bambi: A Life in the Woods by Felix Salten, Bambi's First Day is a part of the Sleeping Bear Press Classic Stories Series.  These are  beloved classic stories brought to present-day life and readability for even the youngest of readers.

Our CHAPTER BOOK selections for this week are from Hope Chest Legacy.  We have the first two books in a series called A Pocket Full of Nickels.

The Pastor's Assignment

In our first book the Nickel children learn all about the history of light, what actually causes light and together they create a science experiment. Aimee is blessed to be allowed to peek inside Mrs. Martin's hope chest, and spends the afternoon listening to the little old woman talk about all the items and what they mean to her. Luke regales his siblings with tales of Jedidiah Smith, the Christian mountain man who found an overland pass to the west coast. And little Julianna helps mother make Meatball Soup (recipe included).

Includes Unit Study spread out sheet.

The second book in the PFON series-
My Mother's Bible

In this exciting edition, the Nickel children have a day where nothing goes right!!! Ever had one of those days?

The Nickel children learn how every trial in life is a time of learning and stretching and allowing the light of Christ to shine through them.

Luke explains to David and Jonathan that there is NO fire in the compost pile (despite all that smoky steam that keeps pouring out!). Will they believe him? All the steam that bellows out is from a biological process that God created to help make NEW DIRT!

Come read along on another fun adverture with the Nickel family.

REMINDER:  all entries must be received by MIDNIGHT this Friday.  We can't wait to hear all about your favorite books this week.  In a few weeks, several of The Old Schoolhouse(r) Magazine staff will be sharing THEIR favorite books with YOU!

We hope that you are participating in our summer reading program! It's going to be a lot of fun. Here on our blog, we'll be posting weekly topics for you to think about and answer. We'll be giving away some great books throughout the summer. Please add us to your friends list and check back often.
