Share your reading lists!

Posted in Splish Says

We have provided reading logs for you to fill out throughout the summer, as you finish reading your books.  However, I'm curious to know if you have a list of books you hope to read this summer, during the Summer Reading Splash program.  I DO!  I'm going to be sharing MY LIST with you, a little at a time.  So be sure to watch my blog (if you haven't already, put your e-mail in the box on the sidebar to sign up for e-mail notifications) - I'll be posting about all the books that I want to read this summer, along with author information and links to where you can purchase these books. Then, at the end of our 10-week program, I'll be giving ALL OF THESE BOOKS away!

I'd love to see your reading lists!
If you have a blog, please post your Summer Reading Splash Reading List on your blog, then sign the Mr. Linky below (with a direct link to your list post).  If you do not have a blog, but have a parent who does, please ask your parent to post your list on his/her  blog for you. This way, everyone can stop by and see your list (and maybe get some ideas of books that they would like to read).

And, just because I LOVE to give things away, I think we'll turn this into a contest!  Since this will give us an opportunity to visit blogs and websites all over the blogosphere, I'd like to give a geography book!  I have two copies of The Little Man in the Map by E. Andrew Martonyi to give away.  This book is written in poetry form, and contains many little hints to help you quickly learn and remember the 50 states and where they are located.  You can read more about this book at the Schoolside Press website.  My friends over at the
TOS Homeschool Crew had opportunity to review this book last year; if you're interested, you can read all of their reviews here.

Everyone who signs the Mr. Linky below will be automatically entered into a drawing to receive one of two copies of this book.  You have two weeks to get your reading lists posted and share the link with us here.  Then, on Friday, June 12th, we'll draw to winners (via random drawing).

Parents - you are welcome to participate in this as well!  The more, the merrier! However, I will create another post (and another Mr. Linky) just for you.  Please do NOT sign the Mr. Linky below -
this one is just FOR THE KIDS!

PLEASE NOTE - I had to remove a few links from the Mr. Linky below because they were not DIRECT LINKS to your reading list posts.  If you want to participate in this contest, please sign the Mr. Linky with a direct link to your reading list.  If you don't have a blog or website, you can e-mail me with a copy of your list and I will be happy to post it on the blog to share (please include first name and age).

I miss you!

Posted in Splish Says

I'm ready for summer again!  I miss all my Summer Reading Splash friends!
Do you miss me too?  I hope so!

Please don't forget that you are welcome to send me your book reports, reviews, poems, and short stories and I will be happy to post them here on my blog.  Nobody has sent me anything for awhile and I'm getting very lonely.  Now that I know how to read, I'm always on the lookout for new things that I can read and enjoy.  E-mail me with your submissions and I'll post them here on my blog.

I've even set up categories (see the sidebar), so you can easily find what you're looking for.

Thanks,

An Awesome Black Friday Sale - a great way to get some new books!

Posted in Splish Says

Many of the books that you see promoted here on Splish's blog are also available for sale at the Schoolhouse Store.  The Schoolhouse Store is a great place to shop because SHIPPING IS ALWAYS FREE!  So, head on over and look for all the books on your wish list.  You'll want to check out our awesome Black Friday Sale......

The Old Schoolhouse Magazine Black Friday Sale

The Old Schoolhouse® Magazine is having an amazing sale on subscriptions during their annual Black Friday Sale November 26 – 30. For those 5 days only, they are drastically reducing their one-year subscription price to $7.95! That's the price you would usually pay for just one issue at a bookstore!

This is their lowest price ever on the magazine and they want all of you to take advantage of this offer and share the info with your friends.

Please don't miss out. Your one-year subscription will pay for itself time and time again as you receive practical tips and Biblical encouragement to keep going strong in your commitment to homeschooling and to the Lord. Since it's a quarterly magazine, they even have a monthly subscriber's only E-Newsletter called Teacher's Toolbox that will give you seasonal teaching ideas and a free E-Book download! It's like joining a unit study of the month club! The free E-Books alone are valued at almost $250/year. It's really perfect for people who are homeschooling on a shoestring or just wanting to add in some little extras to your teaching.

Plus during the Black Friday Sale, they have all kind of bonus gifts when you spend $50, $75, $100, or $150. Some are electronic downloads that you can download immediately, while other are physical products mailed from various vendors directly to your home.

AND, their Win Big contest is going on so if you just happen to be customer 67,000, you will receive a prize package valued at almost $500 which includes a $150 gift certificate to the Schoolhouse Store! Who couldn't use that? And you can qualify to win it no matter how much or how little you spend!

Mark your calendars for November 26 - 30th and do a little shopping from your seat, not your feet at the Schoolhouse Store's Black Friday Sale!

Teaching children to read and to love reading
Is one of the greatest privileges given to parents and grandparents.

If you have a little one who is just now learning to read, or has  been trying for awhile and struggling, then you NEED this new book by TOS Publisher, Gena Suarez.  In And Then Mama Said, It Takes Time to Learn to Read, you'll follow along with the story of Splish as he tries and fails, and tries some more.  Eventually, due to the patience of his homeschooling mama, Splish learns to read and discovers how much fun reading can be.

  • charming characters that your family will quickly come to love
  • delightful illustrations that lead your children right down the path to Bliss Hollow
  • a children's book that encourages obedience to, and respect for, one's parents
  • vocabulary words related to the story, along with simple definitions, providing you with tools to make this story more than just an entertaining read
  • a word search (with answer key), reinforcing words and themes from the book
  • a Christian worldview and Biblical concepts
  • a story that subtly presents the amazing benefits of homeschooling

With each order of the print book, you will receive a FREE download of the BONUS COMPANION ACTIVITY GUIDE!  This e-book contains:

  • copywork

  • science sheets
  • and much more!

A note to those who subscribe to our blog via an e-mail reader

Posted in Splish Says

If you have subscribed to our blog via our Feedburner link in the sidebar, may I recommend clicking on the title of the blog post at the top of the e-mail (it's in bold blue print).  This will bring you directly to the  blog, where you can more easily read the post, as well as see any pictures that may be included.

Subscribing via a reader is basically to let you know when we have updated the blog.  Actually seeing the blog itself is, in my opinion, much more fun and pleasing to the eyes!

Welcome to our Summer Reading Splash!

Posted in Splish Says

We are so pleased that you stopped by our blog!  That must mean that you're planning on doing lots of reading this summer and participating in our summer reading program.  We've got lots of fun things planned for you throughout the summer.  We'd like to tell you about a few of them and get you excited about reading.

Each week, here on our blog, we will be posting a new topic question.  We'd like you to think about these and then e-mail your answers to us by clicking here.  E-mailing your answers is much safer than leaving a comment.  If you have your own e-mail address, that's fine;  if not, have your mom or dad e-mail your answer to us.  Each Friday we will have a drawing and we'll be giving away some fantastic books (and series of books)!  Also, we may pick YOUR answer to post here on our blog- just for fun!

You'll want to check out our Summer Reading Splash webpage also- here you'll have access to downloading our log sheets.  We will have one for younger children and one for older children available.  Please, please, please keep track of ALL the books you read.  At the end of the program, we'll have a special prize for those of you who turn in your reading logs (more details to come!)

We also have suggestions for setting reading goals and some great-looking bookmarks that you can download, and we'll be offering more downloads over the next several weeks.

If you have a blog here at HSB, be sure to add us to your friends list so you will remember to check  back often.  Don't forget to come by each Monday to find the TOPIC OF THE WEEK!

Let TOS help make reading FUN this summer!

*For those who are having trouble using the email link above (or in the posts), you can e-mail your comments, ideas, etc. to me at hstrawser (at) thehomeschoolmagazine (dot) com.  Thanks!

We hope that you are participating in our summer reading program! It's going to be a lot of fun. Here on our blog, we'll be posting weekly topics for you to think about and answer. We'll be giving away some great books throughout the summer. Please add us to your friends list and check back often.
