Raising Sweet Savages

Apr. 27, 2008 - It's chick season....say...Awe...cute!!

One of the many highlights of spring for me is that we get our incubators fired up and put some eggs in them to hatch.  Usually, with each hatch, I get better and better.  There is a definite science to it.  Exact tempurature, humidity, turning, etc.  I find it a fun challenge to try to get a better and better hatch rate each time.  If you live on some acrage, buy a little incubator and have fun too.  You can get the whole set up for under $100.   Our first batch (not the one I fried at 110 degrees...the real FIRST batch) hatched out about 21 chicks.   16 lived past the first, few, critical days.  We kept our 4 favorites and sold the other 12 on the local swap shop.   The  batch we have in now are mainly duck eggs from our own ducks and some eggs we bought off of ebay.  (Did you know you could do that?  That is so neat to actually SHIP eggs....out of 51 eggs only 3 had cracked...not bad...)

Anywhere, by far, our favorite chick from our first hatch is "HOT FUDGE."  He/she is a brown turken (naked neck chicken).    After he/she hit 2 weeks old, a mohawk started forming on his head too.  We all just love him.

Another naked neck that hatched is a yellow one Josiah named "Sunshine."

Here are pictures of Josiah and Sunshine.....and Hot Fudge.

The next batch hatches next weekend!

Ever watch that old PBS show, "All Creature Great & Small", based on James Herriott's books? That's what your about me description made me think of! :-) I love the picture of your son hugging the chick! I read a few other of your posts, and really enjoyed them, too!
Blessings!

No, I haven't seen that show, but I've read some of his writings. LOVE IT! You reminded me that my intro was missing a few of our more recent animals, so I updated it...lol...hard to keep track of them all!!

AWwwww~ The first picture is so cute. You should frame it and put it in his room. It is just so cute!
The second photo- I just can't say the same about. I guess he is a fun- funky chic but he looks pretty strange (sorry to say) He makes me laugh though. Enjoy your little chics and children and have a great week!

Okay dear friend. We're actually thinking of getting a few chickens. Gary (me thinks) want them more than I do, but he is still undecided. What I would like to know though is..... what are ducks good for? Seems like every farm has them. Why?

We just LOVE our ducks. Not only are they hilarious to watch, but they have so much personality and their eggs are wonderful.
Just got some Khaki Campbells to go with our Muscovy and Ancona's and they lay an egg 365 days a year!! Better than a chicken!!!
