Thoughts...

Well, summer's here!

Yes, I know it is odd for me to finally realize that in July! I think it should be understandable since the weather here has been extremely strange! I can't remember a 4th of July when I saw some people walking around in sweatshirts!

Anyway, I've been reading through the books of 1 Kings and Isaiah recently. Both are simply amazing! I'm especially enjoying and being compelled by the amazing passages in Isaiah. God is becoming so BIG! Isaiah's writings aren't only about the sin of God's people, but also about the might and majesty of their God. As I've been studying the Old Testement, I've been compelled by the amount of awe and respect that people were supposed to have for God. I've also been saddened by how much our world has changed.

One thing that especially saddens me is bad language in movies. I find myself wincing as I veiw otherwise really great films! Its interesting though, to me, that most folks I know have major problems with all those nasty "four-letter" words in movies and books.... and yet, when characters take God's name in vain, you don't see hardly anyone flinch! I don't know about you, but when my Savior and Lord's name is used as a cuss word... I really have problems! I don't yell and scream and hope lightening will strike the person, but I do go through some righteous anger. I've talked with some friends who have very similar standards to mine when it comes to language, and we had to agree about this issue. It says in God's word, "Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth....." Alright, so, no swearing! But, much earlier in the Bible it says, "Do not take the Lord's name in vain..." The Bible singles out God's name is a MAJOR "no-no!" for swearing.

What's tragic is because most don't share our faith, God's name is blasphemed all the time!

Okay, so what can we do? I know, we can't expect everyone to stop cussing. But, first of all, we can set an example. I may sound pretty strict, but why do we even use words that STAND FOR cuss words? I've struggled with that issue for a while, but I have to come to the conclusion that we are to have "no unwholesome words proceeding from our mouths"! Not even words that are crude. We must honor God with our speech.

We must also hold to firm morals. My father has asked his coworkers not to swear around him. I'm not saying he isn't mocked because of his beliefs, but at least those he works with know what he stands for and can see by his example that he takes his beliefs seriously. He isn't afraid to say something, and we shouldn't be either.

Okay, well... this post turned out to be more than I originally thought it would be! God does that sometimes, doesn't He?

God bless!

Jul. 9, 2009 - Language

Hi,

So sorry I kept you waiting!

One of my favorite books in the bible is Isaiah (and also Proverbs)!

I know how you feel about people using God's name in vain. Each time I hear one of our neighbors say it I ask them NOT to use God's name in vain, sometimes it work, but not a lot. We are not allowed to say anything close to saying God's name in vain, we say Great Scott (and I add "and a lollipop"). Each time my mom or dad hears someone on TV saying God's name in vain they put it on mute. The language people use on movies and things is not nice (We call it "Colorful Language) and I wonder whoever came up with all the ugly words anyway?!?! I wish that they would not use bad language in movies, or anything.

I hope you have a good day,
~Josephine

Hi!
That was a great post -- it is sad how even Christians will sometimes use God's name carelessly. It's so encouraging to hear of others who want to take a stand. :)

I just recently entered the workforce, after being home nearly 13 years. I was flabbergasted at the language used in the workplace (a hospital). In simple conversation, the "f" word is commonplace. It is very hard to put up with it. As I was sitting at my desk, feeling a bit frustrated over the foul language, the Holy Spirit spoke to me saying, "How else do you expect them to talk? They don't know Me, so they are only speaking their native language, just as you did before you became a Christian."

That has made it a bit easier, but I also have a new appreciation for the scripture that talks about being washed with the water of the Word. When I leave work after hearing that talk all day, I feel like I need a spiritual bath -- in the Word of God.

That's really is sad. Quite irking too. I especially don't like it when people, even Christian say OM*ahem*.

And it's true, the F word is just such a part of the language and so many people say it that it spreads and most don't even think about it when they say it. But I agree, we defiantly can set an example by keeping our language clean. :) More people then you probably know notice when one talks "clean". :)

I agree!!!
It makes me SO mad when an otherwise "good" movie is ruined by a few unnecessary cuss words or taking the Lord's Name in vain.
It doesn't "add" anything to the movie, just subtracts from it.

I have been blessed to have not been around people that cuss much (at least around kids), but now that I'm in my mid teens, a few people's tounges are a little more apt to get colouful around me.

I try not to use slang too...it doesn't always work, but most days I'll find something else. It's hard sometimes- most expressions are slang words! Just the other day I found that "drat" was slang...chock another word off my OK list!!

I totally agree with you. We normally catch the cuss words before they're said. So that way we can mute and we don't here it. But yeah, you're totally right.

You are right on point! The funny thing is people use God's name in their everyday language that don't believe in God! Isn't that weird!? I mean, they don't believe there is a God but say his name in most of the sentences they use! It angers me how people don't even care that they use God's name in vain (even some Christians), same as cuss words. So, I thank you for posting this... I can tell that you started off writing it but God helped you finish it! God Bless You! Oh and would you mind if I added you as my friend?

In Christ,

I agree.... (!!!!)

I get quite frustrated when people use that language. I have noticed that people seem to "catch" their selves right before saying it or apologizing when they are around us. :-) I'm thankful that people sense that we don't talk or accept that even within the first day of meeting us!
