Jul. 7, 2008 - The Humiliation of the Order of Canada

In the midst of a month when I do not have time to blog, I had to eke out a few moments to write about this important topic:  The recently awarded “Order of Canada.”

In writing about the award, Rex Murphy said this, “
That Dr. Morgentaler is a significant actor in Canada's modern public life cannot be challenged. If, like many Canadians, you feel the cause he led, that of abortion rights, is morally derogatory, you may be incensed that he has been honoured. And you have a right to be and to say so. But you would not deny his impact on modern Canada even as you deplored it.”

Mr. Murphy's point is not whether he agrees with Morgentaller’s award or not, however by the standard he sets in the above paragraph this highest honour in Canada could legitimately be given to the likes of Clifford Olsen – for he most certainly had an impact on Canada, even as we deplored it.

The truth is, Morgentaller’s impact is not unlike Olsen’s, for he too ended the lives of many young Canadians.  In fact, he has facilitated the murder of far more innocent children than Olsen ever could have.  This is an undeniable fact.  The controversy surrounding abortion is no longer the question of whether it ends life – this we know to be scientific truth.  Rather, the controversy is the question of whether we have the right to do so, and the fact that this is even a question is unthinkable to many Canadians.

The decision to award the highest honour of Canada to the man who perpetuated so many deaths is not only offensive, it is a slap in the face of all those whose death he enabled.  As was aptly stated in recent a pro-life newsletter, the Governor General has effectively removed the last shred of dignity these young Canadians had left.

If the Governor General disagrees with my position on this issue, it is her right to disagree.  However to award the highest honour in our country to a man who stands so firmly on one side of an issue that is still highly controversial in this country is just plain foolish.  She had to know that this issue would divide Canada right down the middle.  She had to know that many Canadians would be furious and deeply offended by her decision.  Why, then, would she award our highest honour on our behalf to a man whose work is so offensive to so many?  If the Governor General has any sense left at all, she will quickly revoke this award, using, if necessary, the same reasoning that kept Don Cherry from receiving the Order of Canada – that he is too controversial.

I am deeply moved and pleased with the actions of several past recipients of the Order of Canada.  Several of these honourable Canadians have returned their award to the Governor General saying that she has removed the honour that the award once stood for.  It is good to know that there are still those in our country who are willing to stand up for what is right and I applaud these Canadians.  These, ironically, are the ones who truly deserve the highest award Canada has to offer.
