They will also offer insight into the music they will perform, as well as strategies for perfecting musical techniques. Resource materials are available for some performances.

Seed 2 Plate
$8 per student

Please click on the link above for more information about this field trip.  Students will arrive at JVUF at 9:30 a.m. JVUF staff will provide students with an introduction to the farm; including our history, safety-guidelines, and the program objectives. From 10:00 to 12:00 students will break into small groups and rotate through a series of stations, each focusing on aspect of organic food production. These stations will include soil preparation, seed propagation, compost production, weed and pest management, and harvesting. Students will learn about each subject while actually participating in the activity. Once each group has moved through all the stations, students will take the harvested produce to the ‘mobile kitchen' provided by the Culinard.

From 12:00 to 12:30, staff from the Culinard will work with students to prepare the produce and cook lunch. Student will again learn about the Culinary Arts while actually assisting the chef. At 12:30, the students will help set the tables at the farm for a feast and serve their own food. While eating lunch, a nutritionist from UAB's Dieticians program will provide fun interactive ways for the students to see why the food they are eating is different from the food they usually eat for lunch. This will include information on the benefits of eating fresh organic produce, the benefits of eating ‘lightly' cooked or raw food, and finally on how to translate these benefits back to their home.

Students will leave at 1:00 with publications about good eating habits, contact information for their parents to get involved with the farm or community gardens in their neighborhood, and seedlings to start their own garden. In addition, parents will be given $10 produce vouchers that they can reimburse for JVUF produce at either the farmers market or the farm stand. Finally, students will be asked to keep a food journal for the week following the fieldtrip. Please sign up for this fieldtrip with Debbi Spradlin.

The Birmingham Museum of Art Presents
Pompeii: Tales From an Eruption

This exhibition of 500 stunning works of art and artifacts offers a rare glimpse of life in the ancient world. It tells the stories of the final days of Pompeii and the nearby resort cities of Herculaneum, Oplontis and Terzigno following the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. Excavated from 1780 through current day, many of these artifacts have never toured outside Italy. The magnificence of these vibrant cities is reconstructed, with body casts and skeletons shown in the context in which they were found as the pyroclastic surges’ ash and superheated gases
engulfed their world. Citizens clutched their most precious possessions including exquisitely designed jewelry, coins and the tools of their trade. The exhibition also features large-scale frescoes, mosaics, and powerful bronzes depicting subjects from Greek mythology and Roman politics. Cost is $8.00 for children and $9.00 for adults.  Deadline for reservation, payment, and cancellation is Aug. 7.  Please sign up with Debbi Spradlin at everestacademy1@gmail.com Audio Tours are included in the price of the tickets.  You can find more information about the exhibition along with information on lectures and supplemental  educational resources. here:  http://www.pompeiibirmingham.com/about/about.html

Garden Gates Workshop
Birmingham Botanical Gardens
Cost:  FREE

Students will spend one hour in the Garden Gates Workshop and one hour doing a scavenger hunt in Tropical Rain Forest in the BBG Conservatory.  When you sign up, I will send you an attachment containing the scavenger hunt.  Please remember to bring a pencil or pen (or crayon).  Afterwards, everyone is welcome to picnic at the beautiful Sonat Lake, so be sure to bring a sack lunch and drink.

This hands-on journey begins as students identify the basic parts of a plant and their functions:  roots, stems, leaves, and flowers.  Students
will become horticulturists as they acquire the vocabulary associated with making new plants:  germination, horticulture, pollination, fertilization, and propagation.  With an actual seed, each student will locate the seed coat, the stored food, and what will become the roots and leaves.  Students will learn the basic care and maintenance of plants.  Each student will pot a 3-cell pack using different propagation methods: seed, cutting, and division.  We will then take a self-guided tour of the gardens and have a picnic.  Cost is free.  This is an interactive workshop that goes back home with you and gives you further teaching opportunities.

Objectives for this field trip are:
  • Identify the basic parts of a plant and the function of each part:  roots, stems, leaves, and flowers.
  • Identify the basic parts of a flower and the functin of each part:  petal, sepal, stamen, and pistil.
  • Propagate plants using three different methods of propagation:  seed, cutting, and division, and take their plants home with them.

Dignity Memorial® Escape School® is an abduction prevention program that empowers children and parents by providing them with ways to recognize, avoid or escape potentially dangerous situations. Designed to be a catalyst for home-based instruction, parents are encouraged to attend the hour-long presentation with their children so they can reinforce the knowledge that leads to smart choices.

Offered in an entertaining and non-threatening manner, the program teaches children how to differentiate between good and bad strangers, the common lures abductors use, how to "get away, right away" and how to find help when needed. In addition to teaching key concepts, presenters engage children in demonstrations featuring several simple yet highly effective techniques for escaping dangerous situations.

This is the third year that Teaching At Home has offered Escape School.  This is a wonderful program for the kids.  We will have a potluck lunch after the program.  Please bring a dish and drink to share.  Teaching At Home will provide the papergoods, cutlery, and ice.  Sign up with Debbi Spradlin.
