Free School Performances

This series allows the Alys Stephens Center to share the arts with area students and aspiring young artists. These one-hour performances by internationally acclaimed artists let students experience the thrill of a live performance in a world-class performing arts venue.

7-ASC: MeetArtistDuring these interactive presentations, artists will engage students with anecdotes about their educational and artistic training and life as a professional, touring artist. They will also offer insight into the music they will perform, as well as strategies for perfecting musical techniques. Resource materials are available for some performances.

Tiempo Libre

Grammy-nominated Tiempo Libre is one of the hottest young Latin bands today. Equally at home in concert halls, jazz clubs, and dance venues, this is the perfect act for enjoying great music and dancing in our lobby! This Miami-based band has become known for their joyful performances of timba – an irresistible, dance-inducing mix of high-voltage Latin jazz and the seductive rhythms of son. They are true modern heirs to the rich tradition of the music of their native Cuba.


Ellis Marsalis

Marsalis is regarded as the premier modern jazz pianist in New Orleans and for good reason. The patriarch of the Marsalis family delivers irresistible performances and conveys a love for all things jazz and all things NOLA! It’s easy to see where his musician sons, Branford, Wynton, Ellis III, Delfeayo, Miboya, and Jason, got their talent!

 


Axis Dance Company

What is dance? Axis will challenge your notions of dance and movement by turning the whole concept of choreography upside down. The company’s innovative repertories of physically integrated works feature dancers with and without disabilities. Choreographer Bill T. Jones says, “There is no more defiant a land that I can think of than Axis. They showed me what dance could be.”

Sister’s Christmas Catechism

It’s not “The Nutcracker.” And, it sure ain’t “A Christmas Carol.” With hysterical audience interaction, wacky prizes, and non-stop laughs, this is one holiday show you can’t miss! You’ll help Sister solve the Mystery of the Magi’s Gold as she uses techniques from her favorite TV show, Forensic Files and creates a living nativity using audience members dressed as the Holy Family, magi, shepherds, sheep,…and of course, a donkey.

 


Imani Winds

The Grammy-nominated Imani Winds strives to expand the boundaries of the traditional wind quartet. The name Imani, which literally means “faith” in Swahili, embodies the mission of this young African/Latin American ensemble. Their commitment to explore new forms can be seen in their tribute to Josephine Baker that premiered in 2006 to great acclaim. They are the former ensemble in residence at the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center.


Bridgman/Packer Dance

This show is part of the 2008 Alabama Dance Festival. The work of Art Bridgman and Myrna Packer is acclaimed for exploding the duet form into a magically populated stage where image and reality collide. They are recipients of National Endowment for the Arts Choreography Fellowships, NEA Dance Company Grants, and Choreography Fellowships from the New York Foundation for the Arts.

Journey to an imagination factory where every machine is used for one amazing feat after another! The workers at the H. Rosebud Factory are interconnected by their roles on the assembly line until a hapless bird flies into one of their machines, creating mayhem and forever altering their lives and the factory’s future. This is circus with a heart that tells the story of laughter, love, flight, loss, and, above all, our interconnectedness.

Modigliani String Quartet

Praised by Le Progrès (France) for its “Stunning technical expertise, outstanding ensemble and a particularly accomplished musical identity,” Modigliani won the 2006 Young Concert Artists International Auditions in New York and the 2005 Young Concert Artists European Auditions in Paris. Their career has included performances at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, Princeton University, and the Krannert Center.
