Teaching Jeremiah, A Journey into the Mind of an Asperger's Child

"Mommy, Who is Jesus Christ?"

Aiden, Zachary, & Jerry at VBS With Their "Brainy Boppers" On

Yes, this was a question Jeremiah asked last Wednesday after VBS.  Everyday he learned that God gives us the power to do something different.  Monday was to be thankful, Tuesday was to help others, Wednesday was to be brave, and Thursday was to live forever.  Well, after hearing so much about Jesus for so many days in a row, Jeremiah came to me Wednesday afternoon and said, "Mommy, who is Jesus Christ?"

Me:   "You remember, Jesus died on the cross for our sins.  Remember your egg (Easter visual from church)?"
Jerry:   "Oh yeah.  They put the nails in His hands.  I sad.  He's dead."
Me:   "Not anymore Jerry.  He's alive again and wants to live in your heart."

To that Jerry just sort of looked down at his chest and contemplated what I'd just said.  I left it at that and wasn't sure if that was wise or not.  I don't know how much Jeremiah will understand about salvation, but figure if I tell him the story enough times about how good Jesus was and how He died for us so we could go to live with Him in heaven someday, eventually he'll get it...I think his little spirit is already starting to...just waiting for his head to wrap around it too.

Overall, VBS was a very rewarding experience for Jerry and the fact that they repeated key Bible points each and every day really helped him to learn some important truths about Jesus and make Him a very real person to him.

I try to remember that God is always with them and our children have access to the Holy Spirit just like any other child. That means they will process and take in what they are able to take in at that moment in time!!!!
