Teaching Jeremiah, A Journey into the Mind of an Asperger's Child

Jun. 28, 2008 - "Who did, Who Did, Who Did, Who Did, Who Did Swallow Jo - Jo - Jonah?"

Paper Bag Whale

Onto our new learning adventure...learning basic skills through truths found in God's Word.  This week we started our "In the Belly of a Whale, Jonah - A Lesson in Obedience Unit Study".  I just love unit studies!!  They so drive home the point after weeks of going over and over the same theme.

After telling Jerry the story of Jonah, he worked on a whale dot to dot, a maze to help Jonah find his way to Nineveh, and circled things he thought might be found in the belly of a whale.  Jerry also pasted onto charts other words that start with a "J" for Jonah and a "W" for whale.

I think his favorite project had to be stuffing a paper lunch bag with crumpled sheets of notebook paper to make his own whale.  He even put a picture of Jonah inside the whale's belly so that he could really grasp the reality that a whale had swallowed Jonah and why.  We painted the whale blue then and added flippers and a water spout, as well as Jerry's hand drawn eyes and mouth.

When asked who's inside the whale, Jerry replies, "Jonah".  When asked why, he says, "Because he disobeyed God".  YEAH!!  I could stop the unit study right now and know that he learned more than enough in learning the importance of obeying God.

To throw in some readiness skills, I laminated underwater scenes and whales for Jerry to learn with.  He counted each whale as he added and then subtracted them to and from the different scenes.  I put magnets on the backs of the whales too and then gave Jerry a big magnet to hold underneath the underwater scenes.  As he moved his magnet, he made the whales on top move along and appear as though they were swimming.  Having just gone to Sea World last weekend, he played a lot with the killer whale cutout, making him do flips and jump in and out of the water.  It was very cool!

Counting Whales

And of course what better way is there to end our first week of Jonah studies with the Veggie Tales movie of the story.
