Cuisenaire Rods
I LOVE THEM!! I bought the alphabet workbook and mini set for Jerry at the convention this past May and he loves working with them. They are colorful, give him something to touch and manipulate, are blocks (and what kid doesn't like blocks), and they are helping him learn his letters and some basic math skills all at once.
Here he is working on "J". He builds the letter with the blocks first and then completes several pictures using the blocks. For "J", the pictures were jacks and a jug. He just loves seeing which size block will fir into which picture.
The neat thing is that he can use two red blocks for a section of the picture or four white blocks. The blocks start out small and graduate into bigger blocks and he enjoys figuring out how many of one color equals one of another. I don't even think he realizes that's what he's doing, but he is and it's very cool to watch.
