Teaching Jeremiah, A Journey into the Mind of an Asperger's Child

Dec. 12, 2008

White Noise

It's been a crazy few weeks around here with Thanksgiving and now Christmas.  Whew!  It can be hard to stay focused on why we celebrate this time of the year, but we're hanging in there.

A few weeks ago, someone contacted me after reading a post on my Asperger's World blog.  He is a Christian with a professional background in "technical stuff" who sort of stumbled into a relaxation therapy of sorts for kids with ADD/ADHD and autism spectrum disorders.  He asked if I would be willing to try his product for free just to review it for him and I agreed.  He e-mailed me three soundtracks that are mixed with white noise to keep the easily distractable focused.  One is sounds at a beach, another a forest, and still another a storm.  I put the CD into my player in the living room and didn't tell the kids, but began playing them during school.  My older kids don't have issues with paying attention, other than purposefully not listening to me on occasion!  But Jeremiah can quickly get off track and lose all interest when we are working on something.  His attention span is very short, to say the least.

He seemed to do better with these tracks playing in the background.  One afternoon, when we weren't doing school, he was having a meltdown on the living room floor because he couldn't be patient about going somewhere.  I hit the play button on the CD player and just walked away.  Ignoring Jerry's meltdowns does not make them go away, as any Aspie parent can confess.  Within minutes though, he calmed and stopped ranting and just layed on the floor in front of the CD player listening.  Then he got up after a few minutes and went in his room to play with something else.  The meltdown was over!  I loved that.  Needless to say, I have a CD for the van now too and have even downloaded the tracks onto Jerry's Mp3 player for travel.

I'll let you know if and when a website offering these tracks and more is released to the general population.

Dec. 18, 2008 - Glad to hear the audio helped!

Tara,

Was so excited to hear the audio tracks helped Jerry! We're continuing to finalize the development and should have things ready to launch very soon.

I'd encourage anyone interested in our technology to visit our new site:

www.b-calmsound.com

I've got a blog there and will be updating as things develop.

Thanks again for your help!

-Curtis
