Teaching Jeremiah, A Journey into the Mind of an Asperger's Child

Yes, it's another medication.  Jerry had his appointment with Dr. Rao on Monday and we knew something was off.  He was having more tantrums, racing around aimlessly (physically and mentally it seemed), and being very impulsive.  Dr. Rao told us that, as Jeremiah got older, his symptoms would likely progress, worsen, and maybe even change.  So now we have ADHD to add to our list of diagnoses.  I was not thrilled, to say the least, and even let this put me in a pit for a few days.  Jeremiah's response to another pill next to his milk cup the next morning was, "Another pill mommy!  This one's big!"  It's a 20 mg. capsule that he only has to take once a day.  Though discourgaed at first, we have seen great improvement in his behavior, attitude, and overall joy.  I have to keep telling myself, he doesn't like feeling that way anymore than we like dealing with him when he's feeling that way and so, if the medication helps him feel better, we should be happy about it.  Thank you Lord for insurance too because now we're up to about $650 worth of his medications a month!

On the prayer front, Jerry's annual speech IEP is scheduled for January 8th, at which time we hope a milestone will occur...he will go down to needing speech therapy just two times a week instead of three.  We've gotten used to the schedule and routine, but it would be a great relief and stressor removed to go down by just one day.  The other kids have been real troopers about getting up and going and we have been carpooling once a week with another speech mom, but it would sure be nice just the same.  We'll see.  I'll do whatever Miss Ramos recommends.  She's the professional and I want what's best for Jeremiah.

Thank you for your remarks about Vyvanse. My 12 (almost 13 year old) will begin this med on Monday and was worried about using it with a comorbid diagnosis of Asperger's. Doing a quick search landed me on your beautiful and helpful blog. I'm hopeful we see improvements w/o the crashes, headaches, and moodswings we saw with Ritalin LA. Best wishes to you and Jeremiah!
