Astronaut Boards for Dummies

Yes!  We have lift off!!  Woohoo!  Ok, after an exhaustive search, I found ONE website that actually sold "astronaut boards" for OT.  They were $129.00 each....wait...PLUS shipping!  Ouch!  We knew there had to be a less expensive way to acquire one of these boards and so we set off to make our own.

Here's what you need:

1 pack of 8 x 5/8 screws - Lowe's

2 packs of furniture nails (25 in each) - Lowe's

3/4" thick wood, cut to 20" wide by 33" long - Lowe's

15" round and 3/4" thick wood cut into octagon shape - Lowe's

lazy susan hardware (Lowe's)

1 lb. of fiberfill - JoAnn's

1 yd. outer space cloth (cotton) - JoAnn's

hammer

hot glue gun and glue sticks

Instructions:

  • Attach the lazy susan hardware to the bottom of the astronaut board and in between the board's bottom and the octagon-shaped wood.

  • Flip your board over and fit the fiberfill evenly over the surface of the board.  You choose the desired thickness for comfort.  I lightly tacked the fiberfill down with my hot glue gun.

  • Next, I cut the cloth to fit around the board with about four inches to spare around each edge.
  • Then I flipped the board over onto it's top and proceeded to pull the cloth tight on each side and tack it down with the furniture nails.  I basically pretended I was wrapping a present and folded the edges under so they wouldn't fray or get in the way of the lazy susan.

Here's the finished board...

And the happy astronaut in training...

And there you have it!  Now I have to be honest, we have a friend who works at a cabinetry shop and who was able to get and cut our wood to the right dimensions for us.  His name is Bob, affectionately named, "Bob the Builder" by us!  Therefore, we did not have to buy the wood needed for our board.  Our total cost involved was approximately $25, but I cannot imagine that the wood would have cost us much more and Lowe's will even cut it for you.

Therefore...

Supplies Needed to Build Astronaut Board:  $25

Total Time Invested in Making Board:  3 hours

Equipment Necessary to Continue Jerry's OT Therapy at Home:  Priceless!
