Sep. 22, 2007 - wk 3 (N-1)
September 17-21, 2007
Monday, Part 1
We warmed up with phonogram card review and a phonogram quiz on the 10 multiletter phonograms listed in the Preliminaries in WISE page 100.
Monday, Part 2
I dictated the first 10 words from Section N-1 to the students. They worked on listening carefully, saying the words while they wrote them, explaining the markings with the proper dialogue, and reviewing the rules that were included in these words. They were highly motivated by the fact that they were earning tokens for good and attentive behavior. Immediately after taking dictation on these words, the students took a post-test in their spiral notebooks on those same words.
Monday, Part 3
As an independent activity, the students logged the first 5 words from today's list into their word banks and wrote 5 original sentences with these words. Each student was given a requirement for their sentences that coordinated with an English skill they were either working on in their grammar lessons or which would prepare them for our upcoming writing lessons with the IEW material. For example, SE is working on conjunctions in her grammar lessons, so her sentences had to include conjunctions. Both of the boys were required to include dependent clauses in their sentences.
Monday, Part 4
McCall-Crabbs reading.
Today's lesson was approximately 75 minutes, including the independent work.
Tuesday, Part 1
We warmed up with phonogram card review and a quiz which included yesterday's spelling words and the five words that need review from last week's quiz.
Tuesday, Part 2
I dictated the second 10 words from List N-1 and gave the children a post-test immediately afterward. They are doing well on the post-tests!
Tuesday, Part 3
The students added the second set of five words from yesterday's spelling list to their word banks and wrote original sentences for those words. They had much more eager attitudes toward this activity today. Because we are short on time on Tuesdays (piano lessons), I had no requirements for their sentences, but the children added dress-up elements anyway!
Today's lesson was approximately 60 minutes, including the independent work.
Wednesday, Part 1
We warmed up with phonogram card review and a quiz which included (1) those words from N-1 that I felt needed the most review, (2) the five words from last week's quiz, and (3) the prepositions listed at the top of WISE page 101. (We're getting in our A-L review words.)
Wednesday, Part 2
I chose work on prepositions today by adding to our Reference Page B30 all the prepositions that would have been taught up through N-1 had we started at the beginning. (Look in SWR on page 104.) The last word we wrote was "among," which is where we are in our spelling list. We'll add the rest of the prepositions from page 104 as we come to them in the WISE List.
Note: I forgot to have the children add some more words to their word banks and write more sentences!
Wednesday, Part 3
McCall-Crabbs reading
Today's lesson was approximately 35 minutes. We're getting more efficient with our time!
Thursday, Part 1
We warmed up today with the phonogram card review. Our record so far is 1:22 min. The children took a review quiz including all the words from N-1 and the review words from last week.
Thursday, Part 2
Today we worked on the Compound Word activity in WISE on page 100. I wrote the following words across the top of my white board: over, under, out, and after. We went through our list of spelling words for the week and brainstormed how they could be combined with these prepositions to make compound words. They then recorded these words in their spiral notebooks while I wrote the words on the white board.
Thursday, Part 3
McCall-Crabbs reading
Today's lesson was approximately 35 minutes. Again, I should have had them do some sentence writing, but they're doing well with their words.
Friday, Part 1
Today's lesson almost didn't happen! We started our writing class today, which I am teaching to a group of 15 students, and after we got home late, I was tired! After a nap, we revved up to work again, and we finished our week with SWR all five days!
The children had a test on words from N-1, last week's review words, and the A-L review words in WISE on page 87. (Remember, I'm fitting in the review words listed in M as I can so I cover them all.) All three children got A's on this test (90% or better). Only three words from this week's list are being carried over to next week, one of which they all spelled correctly, but in working on it during the week I decided it still needed more work. Two of the number words (WISE pg 87) will also be included in our review words. A great first week for mastery.
Friday, Part 2
My fellow SWR Trainer, Mary Tanksley, recommends a wise activity on test days. She looks ahead to next week's list for any Reference Pages that will be recommended in the Preliminaries. This helps balance out Friday's lessons on a day that would otherwise be short, and helps Monday to run more smoothly. Therefore, I looked ahead to N-2 to find that we needed to cover the E's Dropping page. Hence, we worked on this Reference page (see SWR page 146).
I pulled out my Syllabification game and we sorted through the tile pieces for the suffix endings that we would be using in this activity. This was a time-waster! I should have been prepared for this and have presorted so as not to waste time with the children. Although it was fun for them to have a tile piece that had the suffix we were using, it was also a distraction for my boys. Make a note: Don't bother with these tiles on this kind of activity in the future.
Today's lesson was approximately 90 minutes. Wow! Way too long. It was broken up by moving from the test, to sorting tiles, to working on the Reference Page, but it was too long overall. I would have done better to cut the Reference Page short and just have finished it on Monday. I need to remember to set my timer at the beginning of our lessons, so that I stop on time and don't wear them out.

This is awesome! I was unable to get to a seminar, and this blog has given me some wonderful insight. We are in our 2nd year with SWR with 4 of my children. Thank you so much for this "help".
