Tea Cups in the Garden

• Oct. 24, 2007 - Texas Autumn...Dust Free

Posted in Pot Pourri

Being from upstate New York, dh loves autumn. He misses his home state most this time of year, because Texas isn't necessarily lush with vibrant autumn colors. To compensate, I try to decorate the house with autumn items for him. (Un)fortunately the last several autumns dh has embarked on fresh house remodels which showers layers of construction dust everywhere. As a result, my seasonal allergies are not so much the ragweed but the multitudes of dust that cling to every known surface. Daily dusting results in a fresh surface for more dust particles to rapidly accumulate. Therefore, I have a tendency to store collectibles and leave the shelves as bare as possible. Escaping the dust as often as possible, I flee to window shop and complete errands, leaving dh to make more dust. =) How wonderful to walk in stores where I can breathe freely, accented by scents of cinnamon, pumpkin and other miscellaneous seasonal temptations. Meanwhile, the displays nag me, entice me, and call to me. Finally, I purchase a few irresistible pieces, hoping to display them in due time because surely dh’s remodel will be complete before October ends. Meanwhile the autumnal décor waits patiently in a corner of the dining room, stored in the shopping bag, until Thanksgiving passes, the remodel nears an end, and it goes into storage in some closet, cupboard or the garage for another year. Since this has gone on for several years, I have accumulated quite a collection. Forgetting what I have purchased over the years, I’ll one day be surprised as I open packages and decorate to my heart’s content.

Then, if its not construction hindering my decorating efforts, it’s the warm temperatures turning the colorful pumpkins and gourds into a decaying mess. I have purchased early, put them on the porch, and they have gotten yucky. Also, I have purchased late, only to find that there are few left to choose at the stores because they are yucky messes. Wanting a selection of several festive gourds to decorate the last week of October, to use in our upcoming unit celebration, and to decorate for Thanksgiving, I was desperate for an effective means of preservation.  This year I have hit upon what I think is the mother of all solutions to combat our Texas autumnal heatwaves…

Anytime dh goes into the fridge for a drink of delicious apple cider (his favorite autumnal drink) he is met by the colorful assortment on the bottom shelf of the fridge…dust free I might add! ;)

I opted to go with one of those fake ones that last forever. We keep most of the decorating outside. We used to go all out for all the seasons when the kids were younger and I had more time, but now we stick to the basics (except at Christmas, we go nuts). We're New England transplants to SC, so I can relate to your hubby's missing the fall atmosphere, but we definately do not miss what comes afterward. : )

Your pumpkins are beautiful and well-protected, and may your home someday (during autumn) look like a New England fall delight, without the dust! (:

Warmly,
Lori

Hi Laurie, Yes please could you forward the microscope links to me. The one that we used in college I think was probably like the first one you mentioned where we could fit a petri dish underneath of it for viewing which would be wonderful for growing mold spores in some agar :) The one we used to today is quite horrible! I had to take it apart to try and give it a good cleaning since the lenses were so filthy we couldn't see anything and it would be nice if the stage moved because K has a hard time trying to move the slide around without completely loosing the view of what he was looking at :( Oh well it will get us by for now and I can dream of a new one *grin*
Blessings to you and your family,
Rosina

That was so cute and funny! I will be praying for the day you will enjoy all of your surprises that you have packed away....and that is certainly a way to keep the pumkins fresh and dust free.

Blessings,
JEN

About Me

Gardens thrill my soul. My senses awaken, my soul is refreshed, my mood calms down...and if given time for quiet ponder, I've enjoyed the sound of buzzing bees while collecting pollen, the delightful croak of shy Mr. Toad, the exuberant flutter a hummingbird near my face thanking me for scrumptious flowers, and the gentle touch of the butterfly who settles on my shoulder. I've been known to walk into the house with my hair showered in lavender crepe myrtle blossoms and my clothes covered in blue plumbago blooms. Picture a rustic wrought iron bistro set with floral cushions and gingham pillows under a crepe myrtle dripping in blooms. I've set out some tea. Come and sit with me while I catch you up on the latest of the happenings in my family. Welcome to my garden.
