Teacups in the Garden

• Jul. 24, 2008 - Year 1 Unit 4 Movies

Posted in TOG Y1U4

We watched the rest of the Faith Lessons series.  Ray Vander Laan shows us, who are from the Western World, culture and history from an Eastern World viewpoint yet in light of God's Word.

We watched Ben Hur with Charleton Heston.  We now have Ben Hur Radio Theater from Focus on the Family.  We'll listen to this on vacation!

The Jesus Film is an accurate retelling of the life of Jesus from the book of Luke.  It has been effectively used by missionaries to tell the world about the Savior.

The Robe tells the story of the Roman guard who wins Jesus' robe...and what ultimately happens to him.  My dc wrote a great IEW Unit 9 Critique on this movie.

To see Rome in the present day, we watched  Roman Holiday about a princess who wanted to run away.  Completely off topic but now now school was done and it was summer!  =)

Drive Thru History: Rome If You Want To definitely makes a great review.

The other two Drive Thru History, "East Meets West" and "Turkish Delight" make nice bridge DVDs between Y1 and Y2.  They review year one, even one segment goes all the way back to David and Goliath.  And they sort of preview the Byzantine Empire which is part of Y2U1.  It's hard to match up weeks with TOG with Drive Thru History DVDs, so I like to use them as a review.

• Jul. 24, 2008 - Looking Back Part V: Year 1 Unit 4 Celebration

Posted in TOG Y1U4

My MIL flew from NY to TX just to see this!  She had been getting pictures and hearing all about it.  So she had to come to see this for herself!

This time we were a Roman family.

After introducing ourselves, dd said the Lord's Prayer in Latin.  Then we ate.

Because the Romans made oratory famous, that was the theme of this celebration.  The dc had completed their first year of IEW and had learned how to write persuasive speeches, which is what Roman oratory is all about.  So we took their 5 paragraph persuasive essays, printed them out on parchment,  rolled them up and these were read out loud.  Here are the the scrolls and ds's art projects...

Here are dd's art projects...

Here is dd reading one of her papers.

Here is ds giving Paul's famous oratory to the Athenians in Acts 17: 22-31.

About Me

Gardens thrill my soul. My senses awaken, my soul is refreshed, my mood calms down...and if given time for quiet ponder, I've enjoyed the sound of buzzing bees while collecting pollen, the delightful croak of shy Mr. Toad, the exuberant flutter a hummingbird near my face thanking me for scrumptious flowers, and the gentle touch of the butterfly who settles on my shoulder. I've been known to walk into the house with my hair showered in lavender crepe myrtle blossoms and my clothes covered in blue plumbago blooms. Picture a rustic wrought iron bistro set with floral cushions and gingham pillows under a crepe myrtle dripping in blooms. I've set out some tea. Come and sit with me while I catch you up on the latest of the happenings in my family. Welcome to my garden.
