Thank God I'm A Country Boy!

• Jan. 18, 2008 - Round Two

There will come a day when I will be settled in a comfortable job, with a comfortable home, married to a comfortable wife, playing with my comfortable children, but in order to achieve comfort I need to spend an uncomfortable time pursuing it. Comprendo?

If you recall, I did a post a couple of weeks ago on the hectic application process with the Oakland Fire Department. Just a quick recap: The OFD was taking the first 1,000 applications on December  1st, 2007, but what ended up happening, come 8am on the 1st, was that they started picking people “at random” from the mob lined up at the entrance points. Needless to say, I was not one of the chosen. Seeing the err of their ways, and hoping to avoid the almost certain lawsuits, the OFD opened up the application process again to everyone that was there on the 1st. Refusing to pass up this golden opportunity, my buddy Kelly and I made the long trip back down to the big city.

Surprisingly enough, this time around there weren’t large crowds of people hoping for a chance just to turn in their applications. Upon our immediate arrival, a firefighter checked our paperwork to make sure we had everything…

Where’s the line?!...

There it is. Not very long at all…

It took a total of five minutes for me to complete the process. A little better than the thirteen hours I spent down there the last time with nothing to show for it. Now for the next step: A multiple choice test on Saturday. I would appreciate any prayer that you have to offer, that God would keep me alert and focused, and ultimately giving all glory to Him through this process.

When at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.

Hey Thomas ~ That’s awesome that you were able to get in so easily this time! How weird that there wasn’t a line. Maybe now you’re one step closer to the comfortable life you’re hoping for. :-)

I like your new blog design and header, by the way. That’s a cool frog photo.

Have a good night,
Amanda

Thomas,
I wrote the p.s. first... James thinks that's weird. I'm glad you decided to go back and submit your application, even after the horrible experience the first time. I hope you do well on your test, and I pray that God will continue to be glorified though you. "Try, try again." Isn't there a book where that rhyme ended up with the words "Fry, fry a hen?"

~Jessica~

P.S. To Red: That is my favorite line from National Treasure!

Well, I'm glad that you got another chance at the job you wanted. Today is Saturday, so are you taking your multiple choice question today? I hope that it goes well! You have to post and tell us if you passed or failed.
(To Jessica: That verse is from one of the Caddie Woodlawn books. Tom made it up and Warren kept repeating it. It goes like this... "If at first you don't fricassee, fry fry a hen")
Well, have a good day, Thomas!

TJH,

It's almost 10am (Pacific Time) and I haven't heard from you yet. I am praying however, for success on the written test. I know you will do well.

Love & Blessings, Mom

Well, I shall forgive you this once for being 'stereotypical'... Though I must say that you and Ben have very similar writing styles in spite of you being a second born.
But thanks very much. I'm glad that you liked my post! :-)

Oh how exciting! :-O I can't believe that you got a WHOLE INCH OF SNOW!!! :-) You know what is absolutely amazing? WE HAVE SNOW HERE TOO!!! And only about a foot more than you have! ;-)

Well, enjoy all of the exciting things that you can do in a whole inch of snow! :-) ;-)
Have a great day!

P.S. My Mom wanted to know when you guys are heading out to Illinois this spring and how long you're going to stay and if you're all going. :-) (She's hoping that we'll see you there.)

Would you of come if I had asked?
That's what I thought.
Although we really should go sometime so as to be official D.B's since we've never actually been together.

Till later,
~Katalina

P.S I hope you get in, I really do.

I saw a quote today that said "if at first you don't succeed don't try skydiving...." that wasn't very optimistic now was it? i also saw another today that said "if at first you don't succeed see if there is a prize for the loser...." again not ver optmistic either.....

i think I much prefer "try, try again!"......

glad you tried again....

Wow, your hair looks extreemly red in that first picture! And as it is so near (in position) to your avatar, you really can see how close Norman Rockwell got to actually painting you! I heard about your long haul through the snow.... I'm begining to like the boring flatlands.

Hello!

That's great you didn't have a long line to wait in. I hope all goes well Saturday and will pray for you...

Thank you! I love taking pictures.

That's neat y'all received snow as well. You should post pictures...

Yes, I agree. Our snow-man does need a shave and a hair-cut. He is melting slowly, so at least he is losing weight, aye? That's a start for a good makeover--lol.

Have a great day,
Brooke

Thank-you Thomas, I'm glad you are interested in football some now. I guess that was what my blog was mainly about.
Sorry I never got around to writing those entries on how the game is played. If you ever have any questions, I'd be happy to answer them for you anytime!
You know, if I ever start blogging again.....(which I most likely won't) I'd try to do that, and widen my writings on other things besides football. There's so much other things I could write about! My sister is such a talented writer and teacher, her blogs are worth reading! I don't think I could write blog entries as good as her lol.
Thanks again! Nice meeting and knowing you for that short time.
