Romans 8:28

And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.

Of all of the blog entries that I have struggled to get started, this is going to be the hardest.

Some of you know, while others do not, that a very dear friend of our family, Eric Davis, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday at 41 years of age. Only knowing the Davis family for 2 ½ years, our two families have grown to be very close friends.

From the very first time that I met Mr. Davis, I was both encouraged and intimidated by him at the same time.  I’ll never forget one night while I was going through my EMT class that I was invited over to their house for dinner and game night. We had met them six months prior, but I still didn’t know their family anywhere near the extent that I do now. Making the drive to their house, I was completely terrified! I wasn’t just going over by myself; I was going to the Davis’ by myself!

My fear of Mr. Davis very quickly turned into a great respect for him and his family. I am struggling to find the right words to tell you more, so I will use my fallback and put some pictures up here that will describe Mr. Davis to a tee.

Every year, he would organize a hiking/backpacking/camping trip with some of the families from church. He loved being outdoors in God’s creation…

It seemed like everywhere we went, he was standing with his back to a precipice taking a group shot. Like this one at Pinecrest Lake on Labor Day…

Or this one at the top of a mountain overlooking Yosemite…

I could never get him to switch from Nikon to Canon.

Every Sunday at church, I would see him holding his daughter all through service. This one obviously wasn’t taken at church though. He loved all of his kids dearly...

Mr. D had a goofy sense of humor. This one was taken during a downpour of hail near Tioga Pass on one of our camping trips…

He was rarely seen without some form of food or drink, yet he stayed skinnier than a beanpole…

And yes… he was fearless…

The most important thing though is that he raised a beautiful family with an eagerness to serve the Lord. Mission accomplished…

I am going to sorely miss Mr. Davis, and all of the joy that he brought, but it brings me great joy now to know that we are going to meet again someday. I sure hope he’s finding some great trails up there.

I love and will miss you Mr. D…

Looking at pictures of someone gone always has the same effect on me. If my spelling is awefully badd it's because I'm all teared up righht now. =) Thanks for sharing the pictures and memories. It's bittter-sweet, isn't it?

But really, I am praying for you and everyone involved. I'm so sorry. How many kids did he have? It appears there were quite a few... I know how hard it is.

In Christ,
Jess

Hey Thomas,

I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of you family's friend. I know it's hard losing someone that close to your family. I'll definitely be praying for your family as well as his.

Ahh, thanks for your encouraging comments...I'm guessing you may have gone through some of the same issues with your younger siblings. Yeah, it's not easy, that's for sure, but I know God has her right where she wants her and someday she will become a sweet, well behaved, young girl. I just have to believe that.

Wow, you must be an amazing older brother to take your little sisters out clothes shopping! That's really sweet. I don't know of many older brothers that would do that for their little sisters. I'm sure they really appreciate it. : )

Ok, you had to get me crying, again...

Great post. We will all miss him, though I expect he will be waiting for us at the gates of heaven when we arrive.

"Rubber side down."

Well done, Thomas. I heard you had a great blog. I recognized the photos from the day we spent with y'all at the lake last labor day. The one and only time I had ever met Eric even though I had spent times before with Heather and the kids. Eric will be sorely missed. Love, Nana

I am so sorry for the loss that the Davis family must feel right now, but how wonderful is it to know that when we see him again (y'all again, me for the first time) it will be for forever.
Though I never met Mr. Davis, I can see that he left a great legacy behind him of love for the Lord! I can't wait to meet him in heaven someday!

Thank you for sharing the photos, they nearly made me cry, but at the same time motivated me to live each day for the Lord!

We are praying for y'all, Davis'! And are looking forward to seeing y'all in May and y'all too, Hector's!

Your Sister In Christ,

Jessica McDonald

Thank you so much for posting about my Dad. I know that this has been hard for you and your Dad, I know that this means alot to you. And that shirt you wore on Sunday will always remind me of my Dad.
I will miss the little things Dad would tell us such as....rubber side down, TTFN and some others that my dad would say sarcastically.
See you soon. ~Red

Hi Thomas, I'm so sorry you lost such a close friend to your family. I know what it's like - one of my best friends lost both her parents within a year. Praise God we have the hope of heaven. I enjoyed reading your tribute, and my prayers are with you and the Davis family.
