Singing a Song of My Own

Jun. 13, 2008 - Painting and Storms and Birds, Oh My!

About time I gave ya'll an update huh?
Well, we've been busy redecorating our rooms, the girls' room and the boys' room. Ours is going to have white chair-rail trim about four feet up the wall and the wall is going to be yellow above it and have pink and purple strips under it. I'll post before and after pictures once it is done and I can post after pictures. ;) I learned the steps of painting, at least all of the steps that we've been through so far; clear, repair, clean, and paint. We started Thursday, or rather Wednesday night, by getting everything but our beds and dresser out of our room. Then Thursday morning we got our beds out and moved the dresser to the middle of the room and got the electrical outlet covers and light switch covers out. Then we cleaned, put plastic over our dresser and floor, and taped the things we didn't want painted. Then we cut the trim to size, spread liquid nails on it, nailed real nails into it, and stuck them to the wall. Then we primed everything. Today we started the actual fun part, painting! We measured out the stripes, taped them out, and painted on the pink ones. Mom also put the yellow paint on our walls and ceiling. Tonight we'll put on some light purple paint, mom will that is, and then tomorrow we'll put on the other shade of purple and paint the trim, windows, and baseboards white. We might also give our closet doors a new coating of white paint and do some flowers on them. Oh, that reminds me, we are going to paint grass and flowers sprouting out of the trim too!

Last night we had a pretty good thunderstorm come through. Me and my sister were going to sleep on the futon, but she decided that she would rather sleep on the floor next to the couch. 0.o And she complains when we go camping about the ground being hard! There isn't much harder than a hardwood floor. Ah well, anyways, my younger brother slept in a sleeping bag on the floor, which doesn't surprise me because he loves camping, and my older brother slept in a little mini tent kind of thing.
While it was storming there was this really loud crash of thunder. I had been sitting halfway up doing something and when it came I jumped and fell backward off of the couch! My sister thought it very funny, and so did I really. I finally decided to just sleep on the floor like her, I like camping and I decided it was more comfortable to sleep on the ground than to sleep way up on the futon. The problem with sleeping on the floor is the dogs like to try and sit on your head, especially crazy dogs that are terrified of thunderstorms.

Oh! Mom went up to town last evening to drop something off at Operation Wildlife... can you guess what it was? Well I'm going to tell you the whole story. We all were driving home from getting paint and other things to redo our room with the day before yesterday (which by the way was mom's birthday! Happy birthday to mommy!) when we saw a bird just sitting in the middle of the road. We drove by it and it didn't move. I looked at mom and asked what on earth could be wrong with that bird. It wasn't dead; a dead bird wouldn't be able to sit up like this one was, but there was something definitely wrong with it. We turned around and found it right where it had been. Mom walked out and picked it up; it didn't even try to run away! When she brought it to the van it started to struggle a little, and while I was holding it on the way home it struggled a little too. When mom got into the car with it I was like, "That looks like a Cuckoo!!" Mom said she thought it was just a Mockingbird, there are plenty of those around here, and asked if Cuckoos even lived around here. Now, I've pored over bird guides, looking longingly at pictures of Cedar Waxwings and Cuckoo birds. I've always wanted to see one of those birds. I knew that they lived around here and I knew what they looked like. We got home and while mom put it into a bird cage I ran for the bird guide. Sure enough, it ended up being a Yellow-billed Cuckoo! I was SO excited!! Yesterday we brought it outside to see if it would fly, it tried, but just went down. We brought it in again and later mom hauled it off to Operation Wildlife. We found out that it had been carrying eggs when it had run into the car, and so they all got smooshed inside the poor birdie! They said that it would be fine though, that it just needed to be monitored while it got rid of all the broken egg. Here is a picture:

Well, this post is getting pretty long so I'll wrap it up here.
