Mar. 9, 2006 - Rice Manipulation. "School" March 9th, 2006
What do you get when you add:
10 pounds dry rice
various measuring cups/utensils/funnels
1 large plastic box
two very excited, hands on toddlers??
TONS of FUN!!
This is what we did for "school time" today. The girls LOVED it! Originally I was going to use this rice to make Draft Absorbers to keep at the threashold of our doors during this winter, but alas our sewing machine thought it too big a task (humph!) and I had two very large bags of this rice leftover! I had been keeping it anyway, along with the cloth, hoping we could fix the sewing machine eventually and finish the project. Then a few days ago I was reading about some Montessorie ideas from the "Mega Mommy" herself Barbara Curtis, and I thought, YAY!! That's our next project!!
This is a really great hands on way to teach preschoolers the concepts of "more" and "less," as well as fine tuning thier hand eye corrdination and fine motor skills. By transferring from cup to cup ,or pouring into a funnel. I love this Montessorie stuff! The concept of learning through hands on fun projects!! Just so much fun for both "students" and "teacher"!!
** Just an FYI: don't leave two toddlers alone with a large bucket of rice at thier very command...even for FIVE minutes...Look what I came back to:
How the two of them fit inside that box I will never know lol! Silly Monkeys! *giggles* My, how they capture my heart! *sigh*

Kristy - I saw your link on BabyCenter. Your girls are precious. We did the rice tub thing and it got so messy that it ended up on the front porch! Then we would sweep it off into the flowerbed, but lets just say rice does not compost well! But it was SO fun!
Sorry that one lady was so rude. You were just trying to be helpful!
We have a school blog at www.psalmone.blogspot.com Feel free to come by sometime!
