Eat my Imagination

Okay my last entry was so depressing I had to add one that wasn't.

My 2yo dd is about the cutest child imaginable.  We were sitting on the couch eating lunch one day.  She had requested that her sandwhich not have crust on it.  There was just a little bit of crust on one side.  I said, "There's no crust on that sandwhich.  Its just your imagination." She promptly pulled the piece of crust off, handed it to me and said, "Here, eat my imagination."

Littlest in the Closet

I don't usually post pictures of my kids for privacy reasons, but this was too cute.  She fell asleep in my closet.

Nursing my toddler

I am still nursing my toddler.  She will be two in a couple of weeks.  I had planned to nurse her until at least two.  Somewhere in my mind I pictured her turning two and gradually giving up nursing, as she was then too old for it.  Yes, this is not my first child. I really do know better.

I nursed my son until he was nine months old.  I didn't know anyone else that breastfed, and it was hard for me to nurse that long. I am proud that I gave him the best that I knew at the time.  I was working full-time when my dd was little.  I nursed her till she was two, and she weaned herself about a month or so after turning two.  She had gradually started dropping nursing sessions since she was eighteen months, so I could see that she would eventually stop.  She also had a love affair with cow’s milk and would drink it all the time.

D, is s different story - as she is with most things.  She is allergic to cows milk.  We found this out when she was around four months old.  We had thought she was very colicky, but our doctor told us that it was probably an allergy to something I was eating.  Once I stopped drinking milk, she was a different baby, but that is another story.  Since she is allergic to cow's milk, the only thing she drinks besides breastmilk is water, a little goat’s milk, and some diet coke (bad momma ).    Somedays, I think she will never ever ever wean.  I picture myself taking a vacation alone for a week and leaving her with my dh and coming back with no milk.

Somedays, I feel like an over-extended pacifier.  Somedays, I can take no more touching.  Somedays, I am ready for this to be over.  Then again, some days she pulls my shirt back into place and says "all done. No more mommy milk."  Somedays, she notices that I am watching tv while she is nursing and pulls my face gently down and says "mommy, look me."   Somedays, she looks at me and says "wuv mommy milk."  Some days, she starts to nurse, then hops up and runs to play.  Somedays, I remember that she will only be this small once.

Orangutans and Dandelions

Little D is growing up before my eyes.   She is about a month and a half from being two.

On our zoo day, she did NOT like the gorillas.  Orangutans are great. Gorillas are scary.  Maybe the gorillas look too human for her.  She loved watching the baby gorilla eat and play, but she was terrified of the adults.  She didn't have the same problem with the adult orangutans.  She can even tell a male (daddy) from a female (mommy) orangutan.  I think that is pretty perceptive.

She has recently become very aware that she can't read.  My other two were early readers, but I have never experienced this.  D will get a book, look through it for a while, then bring it to me all upset.  As she hands it to me she says, "I can't read it."  She will also take a book I am reading and say, "I'll read it for you."  Then of course, she hands it back a little later with the same "I can't read it.".  Poor little one, I don't know what to do about it.  Maybe I will find some books without words in them and look through them with her.  Maybe she will be satisfied "reading" without words in the books.

After dinner last night, D wanted to go for a walk.  She put on her little pink hiking shoes and declared it was time for a walk.  I tried to go with her without my shoes, but she wouldn't accept that.  She wanted me to wear my shoes so we could go for a hike.  No one else wanted to join us, so she got to walk at her own pace.  We went straight down the sidewalk without stopping until we got onto the trail.  Once we were on the trail, we stopped to pick up rocks, play in the sand and blow every single dandelion we found.  Its nice to take the time sometimes to pick the dandelions and not just walk on by.

Go Swimming Today

Yesterday, when I was trying to get D dressed she said "no like it" to every choice I attempted.  I was too tired to argue over clothes, so I just left her in her pj's and went for Diet Coke.  She came downstairs a few minutes later with her swimming suit on carrying A's suit.  She announced "lets go swimming 'day".  I smiled at her with that "aren't you cute" smile and asked what was for breakfast.  She ignored my question and asked where my swimming suit was.  She had one of those little faces that just melt your heart.  I could not think of any reason we couldn't go swimming.

So after breakfast, laundry, basic pickup, stories, dishes, and school startup for T, we went to the pool.  I am glad we did.  It was nice and the girls love the water.

It wasn't what I had planned for the day, it was better.

Making Lists

I make lists.  There I have said it. I am a list maker.  I like to use paper and pencil - even in the digital age when I could have and endless number of gadgets to put my list on.

Yesterday, my dd A who is 5, woke me up from my nap to tell me that she was planning a party and needed some things from the store.  Great.  I asked her to make a list and we would go to the store after nap.  She came back twenty minutes later with a wonderful list full of colorful pictures of the things she needed.  She used this list at the grocery store with  her own cart.  She was very proud of her accomplishment.

Last night while I was eating my before bed cereal snack, my dd D who is a whole 22 months old, sat by me with a pencil and a piece of paper and said "making list".  Cute, I thought.  Then she asked me what I needed. I replied "I don't know".  She said "dog food" and scribbled on the paper then asked "what else?"  I said "How about cat food?"  She repeated "kitty food" and scribbled on her list.  We went on like this for a good long time with she and I exchanging ideas about what we needed and her scribbling it down.  She even carried her list up to bed with her and only put it down after I told her she couldn't nurse and write on her list.

I think I have a couple of more list makers in the family now.

Going to Alabama

Last week, D (21 months) go a grocery bag, put it on her shoulder, took my  hand and said "come-on Mama. with me".  I asked her where we were going, she announced "going Alabama."  It was very cute.  So now since then, whenever she starts walking away and is asked where she is going, she always answers "going Alabama."  I am pretty sure that she learned that from learning to sing Oh Susanna.  I love to watch the way that little ones think.

Things for the Toddler

I have been reading some Montessori stuff looking for inspiration for D.  She is 21 months old and getting very independent.  I think some Montessori practical skills and sensory experiences would be great to keep her interest.  This week I am going to go to Goodwill and the craft store and make some Montessori style activities for her.

Here are the activities I plan to setup.
Tweezers and Beads
Sorting Beads
Pouring exercises
picking up with tongs
Spooning beads
Pasta Necklace stringing
Folding practice

Sound boxes

I also want to pick up a wooden table with two chairs.  I have been thinking about moving her to eating at a small table next to the dining room table so that she can be more independent for meals (and maybe eat somewhere other than my lap).

Montessori is big on respect for children and giving them a safe place to explore and the freedom to explore it.  I think that with these inexpensive "toys" D will have something to do that is her own.   She could be busy while A and T have school.

My future chemist?

Friday is Spaghetti Night around my house these days.  I work on Friday and my hubby works from home to watch to the kids.  So, a simple spaghetti dinner makes sense.

Last Friday, my 20mo had a different idea about proper use for spaghetti.

She emptied her plate and put her spaghetti on the table.  Then she mixed water from her sippy cup with some spaghetti in her plate until it was "just right".  Then she put it in her hair and proceeded to wash her hair with spaghetti.  She invented spaghetti shampoo.

Friday night is now also bath night.

Rock Mommy in Tree top

We are sitting in the shade on our front porch.  My littlest one is being so cute.  She is walking around with a stick, hugging it, and singing "Rock a mommy in tree top, when bow brakes, home come mommy cradle and all."  It is very sweet.  Of course the stick reminds me that kids really don't need toys.

My oldest two have had way too many things.  While the little one has some toys, many recycled from her brother and sister, she spends more time with a few special things and playing with whatever she finds around.  I like that.  Too bad I couldn't  have learned it 16 years ago - I'd have alot more money in that savings account.

Rock-a-bye-Mommy is probably my favorite song now.
