Erin and Connor came to me the other day with a business proposal. They wanted to make grilled cheese sandwiches and sell them. The conversation went something like this. Mom: Why is it that you picked grilled cheese sandwiches to sell. Erin: Well, because, it is the only thing I know how to make. We want to make the sandwiches and sell them at a table out in the front yard. Mom: (Trying to let her down easy.) Well you know, we dont get too many people coming this far down our street. I just dont think you would have any customers. Erin: We could put them in a wagon and sell them at peoples houses. Mom: (Seeing that they were not going to be deterred and thinking it would probably be a good learning experience.) Hmm
. What if you sold treats instead? I could teach you how to make something like brownies and you could try to sell those. Erin and Connor: (Jumping up and down.) Yeah! We could sell all kinds of treats. Mom: What will you name your business? After long deliberation they decided on The Goody Wagon. I told them that goodies were quite expensive to make. They would have to talk to Dad the banker about getting a loan for their supplies. Here is the picture of them presenting their business plan to the banker. Connor is raising his had to speak.
He allowed the loan but is charging them interest compounded weekly. He also suggested that they try and sell seasonal treats like caramel apples. They are so excided. We have since made up the menus and the signs. Next week, they are going to find all the recipes and write out a grocery list. What fun. One of my fondest memories is selling Kool-aid at a table in front of my house. I hope they are a little more profitable than I was, however. I handed out so many free samples that I never sold one glass. I will be sure to take lots of photos of our budding entrepreneurs and post them.

Sep. 16, 2006 - What fun!
She has actually not done too bad with it, but now that it is cooling down, and her and her friend are busier with school things, they are having trouble getting together to do it. But they have had the most fun with it!
Good luck to them and I will check back to see how they are making out!
