It's Been a While!
John 8:12
When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."
It's been so long since I've updated!! I apologize. Life just got busy!
We have still been doing school, but did away with My Father's World. I like it, and it gave my some really good ideas. But I didn't like being told what to teach and in what order to teach it. Lately, I have just been asking the kids what they want to learn about instead! Every day they tell me something different. This will work for now. When they stop thinking of things, I will choose for them and get their spark going again. Of course, we still do things like math and science and art, it's just all usually related to our unit study of the day or week.
We have been spending quite a bit of time outside, since we moved in April and have our own backyard now. They have been really interested in rocks and birds, so I foresee some cool projects coming up on those subjects. And, little did I know, my husband knows a lot about birds! So we've been talking about things he can jump in and do with the kids too about that.
Ben started soccer this week with our new homeschooling group. He is LOVING it! The moms there are really nice, and I'm enjoying their company. It's not easy for me to put myself out there and make friends, but all the ones I have met so far have made it worth it.
We are also expecting baby #5!!! We are very excited about it, and truly believe every baby is a blessing from God. God has a plan for every facet of our life, whether we choose to believe it or not, and I know he has awesome plans for our family.
Hubby has started playing softball for fun 2 nights a week, and is loving it. The teams aren't the best, so they haven't won more than a handful of games, but that's not the point. There is a great guy from his work there, and those two enjoy talking with each other and playing softball. Hubby also wants to start volunteering with Habitat for Humanity soon, and is looking forward to that.
This coming year will be our first "official" (aka legal) year of homeschooling!! The first year I need to keep attendance records and send in the NOI. (notice of intent) I am trying to get all this lingo and legal stuff down so I know what I'm doing and when. Looks like I'll actually be saying our school year is August 1-August 1st, which means I will actually fill out the NOI for BOTH boys this year! Our oldest will be 6 right before the school year begins, and the next one will be 6 during that school year. It's a little nerve-wracking, but hopefully everything goes well.
On a great note, my almost 5 year old has started writing!!!!! All year long, I know I've shared some battles he and I have had on this. He just balked at the idea and wouldn't even let me show him how to hold a crayon or pencil correctly.
We were learning about zebras the other day, and he asked me how to do it correctly!!! Then he proceeded to write his own name!!! I was floored and SO HAPPY!!! I swear, homeschooling is like potty training. They will do it when THEY are ready, and not a moment sooner! lol That is another reason I'm glad we homeschool. Can you imagine if he was in kindergarten and they were pushing him to write? (for example) Luckily, he wouldn't be in kindergarten until this fall anyway, so he is doing awesome.
Here are the pictures of their zebra day. I think it's neat that you can definitely see an age progression of skill levels when these are all side by side! Ben tries to cut and color neatly, Jack is just learning how, and Meg likes to have fun! lol

Anyway, that is what's going on with us lately!
I'll try and keep updating on here from time to time, but I will probably do a lot more come August, when we're "official."
Thanks for reading and thanks for any encouragement! |
