Monkeys!

Posted in Homeschooling
John 8:12
When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."

Today we learned all about monkeys!!
I thought it would be more fun than it was though.  lol  It was for them, just not for Mommy!  I think I picked too many things to do, or too many of the same things.  The kids were having a hard time listening and paying attention today, and I was getting impatient because of it.

But still, we had a good day, and many things were learned.  It's always fun when Daddy gets home and they tell him everything they learned!  I like it especially, because then he hears what's going on during the day, can see some of our artwork, and then he likes to quiz them over supper too.

We learned what the main characteristic of a primate is (5 digits on hands and feet), how many kids of primates there are (5), where apes and monkeys live, the difference between those two groups, what they eat, how they communicate, and things like that.

We made monkey masks out of paper plates.  That project really fell flat.  I thought it would be cooler than it turned out!  lol  The kids didn't care though, that's for sure.   I should have had them color the whole paper plate brown first, maybe.  I was going to have a popsicle stick at the bottom of the plate, so they could hold it that way, but I couldn't find them.
We colored our "M" picture (which we do every single time), cut it out, and glued it onto a piece of construction paper.  I did another project where they had a blank outline of a monkey, and they had to draw faces on them.  That was cute.  We sang their favorite "5 Little Monkeys Jumping On The Bed" song and acted it out on the couch.  LOL  Let's say that was the hit of the day, and luckily, no one got hurt.

We worked on a letter to send to their pen pals, which is WAY overdue.  So each of them drew a small picture and I wrote what they told me to on the back of it.  They were pretty excited to do that!

Daddy did have fun quizzing them at supper time, and we somehow started talking about numbers.  I asked Jack, "Can you count backwards from 10 down to 0?"  And he DID!!!  I was so shocked.  I have never ever asked them to do that before!  I didn't know they could.  I knew that they should be able to do that in kindergarten, but hadn't tried yet.  Daddy was very impressed!!  Meg counted up t0 20, with a few mistakes after 15, but I was happy with that too!  Ben also did the counting backwards thing, but I knew he could do that.  Anyway, it's fun when they surprise you with things like that!

Sorry I'm updating this blog more than I said I would!  lol  Maybe this is helping me be more accountable.  Don't worry, we are taking a break this weekend!

Here are pics from today:

Meg's monkey mask

Jack's monkey mask

Ben's monkey mask

Their "M" pictures I hung on the top of the chalkboard

Meg found some water, and made handprints all over the chalkboard!!!  Grr!!!!
