This is FUN!! (also K test results)
John 8:12
When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."
We are having so much fun with school......and it's only going to get better!
The boys are LOVING their math program. And frankly, so am I! We got a program called Math-U-See. We sit down, every day, and watch the lesson on DVD. It's only maybe 2 minutes long right now. I keep my finger on the pause button, and every time he asks a question, I pause it and have them answer it.
Today we learned about right angles! They had to go around the room and pick out rectangles, then show and count the number of right angles. Jack picked out a Disney VHS movie box. Ben picked out the lid of our baby wipes container!
We got our history program, called The Story of the World. We have been learning about what the word history means, and how all of us have a history. We're learning about archaeology, and will start reading about nomads and Ancient Times this week. I'm a bit stuck on this until next week though, because our printer ran out of ink. I need to make copies out of the book for both boys to color the Egyptian maps and whatnot.
I started piano lessons with Ben last week, and he loved it! There was one point where we got to play a duet together, it's so cute. lol I'll have to remember and video tape it sometime. I play a song, and during it, I ask him to play loud, then soft, then long notes and short notes, tap the bench, etc. He loved it. He learned how to sit at the piano properly and what to look for, so that he has an "I'm Great!" pose every single time.
We haven't even gotten into any fun arts or science projects yet, so school will just keep getting more and more fun! I'm so happy about our curriculum this year. THIS is how school should be.....FUN! Learning should be fun for everyone. I know (and the kids know) that not every day will be fun. Some days will be hard! But overall, it's just awesome. I love being home with them, and I love being their teacher!
---------------------------------------
Oh!! I almost forgot.
Remember how I said Ben took a kindergarten test? The results came back a couple days ago.
Anyway, the results are in!!!!
There were 4 areas tested. I will try and break it down and then explain below.
Word Analysis
National Percentile: 83%
Stanine: 7
Grade Equiv.: None
Vocabulary
National Percentile: 59%
Stanine: 5
Grade Equiv.: K.9
Comprehension
National Percentile: 89%
Stanine: 7
Grade Equiv.: 1.6
Math
National Percentile: 34%
Stanine: 4
Grade Equiv.: K.4
Okay, so the percentage is just like a kid's growth/weight chart. Pretty self-explanatory.
The Stanine score means this: 1, 2, or 3 means below average. 4, 5, 6 means average. 7, 8, and 9 means above average.
Yay!! So that means he is actually average in math (although the lower end) and vocabulary. And above average in word analysis and comprehension!
The grade equivalent is what grade the test would put him at. Ideally, you would want a K.9, which means Kindergarten, 9th month, or the end of the school year. Since this is a K test, you just want him to be in K.
Word analysis is 'None', because he actually scored 2 grades higher! If you score 2 grades higher or 2 grades lower, they don't mark it. So he scored 2nd grade in that.
He scored kindergarten, 9 months on vocab; 1st grade, 6 months on comprehension, and then kindergarten, 4 months on math.
So, all in all, he did really really well!!!! I'm so proud of him. I feel bad that his math score isn't higher, because that really is not a reflection of him. That's just because I didn't teach it to him, (plus, the program we used last year didn't really focus on math) not because he didn't understand it. You know? So I'm excited and anxious to use this same test again next year and see how it compares!
Yay Ben! Seriously, I'm very happy that he scored above average in almost everything!!! I know the tests aren't required, and we won't be doing anything with the tests and results, except filing them away for ourselves. I can see now why they don't test until 3rd grade normally. Because some programs focus more on math, or more on reading, etc. By 3rd grade everyone is usually caught up, no matter how they started!
Hubby said he was pleasantly surprised, and very happy with how homeschooling is going. He said he's proud of how things are going this year too!
YAY!!!! |
