Fun & Games with Writing
Have a little fun with words.
Have you ever played “Mad Libs”? Where someone asks for nouns, verbs, adjectives, and you say whatever comes into your head, and it turns out to be a crazy, nonsensical, story?! Well, if you like that you’ll like this next game I’m going to tell you about.
Sunday, we were over visiting with Robinlyn’s family. We had a wonderful time. I got involved in a writing game with Breezy Tulip, and Miss Emily Rose. It’s great fun if you’ve never tried it you should.
Everyone gets a piece of paper and a pencil. You write your initials in the left hand margin and write a sentence, then you hand it to the next person. That person writes a sentence based on what you have written, then folds over the paper so the next person can’t see what you’ve written. So, the paper continues to go around the circle of people and each person writes a sentence based on what the person before them has written. (The rest of the sentences are hidden, by folding over the paper.)
This is the story I started, but I imagined a completely different ending.

(For those of you who can’t read the above picture)
My sentence: Alice Beetle caught a dreadful cold, while assisting her brother Bart Beetle with his chores.
Person 2: Bart was so sorry he made his sister Alice sick, and tried to make it up to her by making a get-well card for her.
Person 3: Even though he made a get well card she didn’t get well, she just got worse.
Person 4: And she died.
Person 5: The whole family was sad.
My sentence again (Not realizing that this was even my story): Dad threw himself into he work in the barn; mom stayed in be with the covers over her head; and the rest of the family sat starring at each other, their minds in total confusion.
Person 2: They couldn’t figure out what happen to their family; everything was so disorganized, the children couldn’t fix their own meals, and their grandparents refused to visit.
Person 3: Nobody wanted to come over or do anything, so they just sat on the couch and watched TV.
Person 4: Because of all the TV, their brains began to shrink, and their stomachs enlarged because of their vegging.
Person 5: They were all so scared and ran into a hole.
My last sentence (Not knowing that this was my story): Pushing and poking one another to scoot over, so they all fit, and now they were safe,
I didn’t realize poor Alice would die, I feel awful! This is not at all the story I saw in my mind. I like happy endings. But it made us all laugh at the sad down word spiral of the whole thing.
If you are looking for a rainy day game to play with those in your family who can write, this is a good one. Have fun!
